TORONTO 1, QUEEN'S 1
TORONTO, Ont. - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team finished the 2008 OUA regular season with a win and a tie. The Blues dominated the host RMC Paladins 7-0 on Sat., Oct. 18, and tied the Queen's Gaels 1-1 on Sun., Oct. 19.
With these outcomes, the No. 4 women close out their campaign with the top spot in the OUA East, overtaking the arch-nemesis Ottawa Gee-Gees by two points.
The women's team exploded early and often against the Paladins led by third-year Blues players Christina Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Erica Basso (Richmond Hill, Ont.), who each scored two goals on Saturday afternoon.
Basso, Fantozzi and Janessa Banwell (Toronto, Ont.) all scored within the first 25 minutes of the match to give the Blues a 3-0 lead at the halfway point of the game.
The second half proved to be much of the same as the Blues attacked relentlessly. Fantozzi and Basso added their second goals of the game, while Jennifer Siu (London, Ont.) and Briony DeMott (Victoria, B.C.) potted one apiece to round out the 7-0 victory.
Sunday's game started off slow as neither team could find the back of the net in the first half.
Kingston native Renee MacLellan opened up the scoring for the Gaels in the 68th minute of the match. The Blues responded when third-year faculty of physical education and health student Melanie Seabra (Brampton, Ont.) potted her third goal of the season in the 77th minute to tie things up.
Neither team would score again and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

LAURENTIAN 2, CARLETON 0
LAURENTIAN 3, TRENT 1
SUDBURY, Ont. - The Laurentian Lady Vees looked to continue their winning streak when they faced off with the last-placed Trent Excalibur, on a brisk day at the LU Soccer Field. The Lady Vees secured a 3-1 victory, lead by the offensive attack of Dayna Corelli, who tallied twice, and Katelyn Larue who added a single. Victoria Kulczycki recorded the win in goal for the Lady Vees.
As the ball started rolling in the first half, it was the Lady Vees that quickly established presence in the Trent half of the pitch. Laurentian attempted to control the ball in the midfield, and penetrate the Trent defence. Laurentian struck gold in the 10th minute, as Corelli (Sudbury, Ont.) vacuumed up the rebound from Sam Falcioni's (Sudbury, Ont.) shot, for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Vees continued to press, and had additional chances in the first half. Corelli on a header in the 32nd minute, and Michelle Sousa (Brampton, Ont.) with a strike in the 39th minute looked to increase the lead. The Lady Vees had a majority of the possession, entered halftime with a slim, but well deserved 1-0 lead.
The second half continued the way the first ended, as Laurentian looked to increase their lead, but the lacklustre finishing did not aid in this attempt. In the 48th minute, Krista Pantin (Mississauga, Ont.) dribbled by an Excalibur defender, before narrowly missing the target. Trent showed a heartbeat, as they tested Kulczycki (London, Ont.) on a breakaway, but the Lady Vees goalie was up to the challenge. Laurentian would once again begin mounting an attack, but could not conquer past the Trent defenders. The Lady Vees had a high percentage of the possession, but it did not harvest much, as they were constantly turned down by the Trent defence.
In the 78th minute, it was Alana Brady (Cornwall, Ont.) that showed a great deal of confidence, taking a strike from nearly 30-yards out, which the goalie saved with the help of the crossbar. In the 80th minute, it was Corelli's second strike of the game, after she tapped in a header from Jenna Roach (Sudbury, Ont.). Larue (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) would add a third goal in the 85th minute, as she caught the Trent keeper napping, and lofted the ball over her head into the back of the net. Trent replied with a tally of their own, and third of the season, in the 88th minute, as Jen Elchyson (Peterborough, Ont.) squeaked through the Laurentian defence to tuck one by Kulczycki.
"It is difficult trying to get motivated for a game like this. Especially when you face such a defensive-minded opponent," said Lady Vees head coach Rob Gallo. "Even though we did not play particularly well, we will take the three points and look ahead to the playoffs."

LONDON, Ont. – The Wilfrid Laurier women's soccer team defeated the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 4-0 at TD Waterhouse Stadium. Laurier will now finish in third place in the OUA West.

QUEEN'S 2, RYERSON 1
RYERSON 4, RMC 0
KINGSTON, Ont. - Defender and team captain Suzanne Briggs, playing in her final game in a Ryerson Rams uniform, scored two goals to lead the Rams women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over RMC in the team's final game of the OUA regular season on Sunday afternoon in Kingston.
After some urging from his players, Ryerson head coach Peyvand Mossavat moved Briggs up to forward from her regular defender position for the final 20 minutes of Sunday's contest. Briggs, who had not scored a goal during her four-year Ryerson career, would net her first in the 87th minute when she converted a feed from Andrea Raso (Toronto, Ont.) just outside the 18. Two minutes later, the Keswick, Ont. product scored her second by heading in a Rams corner kick.
"Suzanne is probably the most influential player in our program's history," said Mossavat. "She has been phenomenal and she will be missed."
Briggs, who will graduate this year from the geographic analysis program, has been named a CIS Academic All-Canadian every year she has been at Ryerson after maintaining a grade point average (GPA) of 80 percent or better each year.
She was recognized as one of the top female scholar-athletes from across the province at the OUA Women of Influence Luncheon last year and she is a former team MVP. A three-time team captain, she gave an emotional pre-game speech before Sunday's season finale.
Tessa Dimitrakopoulos (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored Ryerson's other two goals on Sunday. The third-year forward and two-time all-star finished the year third in OUA scoring with 13 goals. Third-year keeper Michelle Smiciklas (Oakville, Ont.) picked up her first clean sheet of the season.
The Rams finished the regular season in seventh place with a record of 5-6-3 and 18 points, two points out of the final playoff spot.
