LIONS HUMBLE GRYPHONS IN W-SOCCER
TORONTO, Ont. - A pair of York Lions netted two goals each as the No. 2 nationally-ranked women's soccer squad defeated the Guelph Gryphons 5-1.
With both goaltenders embroiled in a shutout for a good portion of the opening half, Alicia Donaldson (Mississagua, Ont.) broke the goose egg for York in the 24th minute. It would set off a wild end to the half.
Donaldson struck again in the 30th minute, only to see Guelph striker Natalie Ackerman (Guelph, Ont.) return the favour 60 seconds later. But the Gryphons celebration was short-lived as York midfielder Stephanie Junkin (Brampton, Ont.) would answer right back with a goal of her own. In total, three goals were scored in under 90 seconds.
Stefania Morra (Scarborough, Ont.) scored her eighth goal of the season in the 35th minute, as York took a 4-1 lead into halftime.
Junkin struck again for her second goal in the 60th minute, as the Lions would easily hold on for their fourth win of the season.
