BADGERS UPSET DEFENDING CHAMPIONS AT CIS W-SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
"I told our players to believe in themselves prior to [the match], we've made history three times," said Badgers head coach Charles Ivanov, whose team is playing at the CIS tournament for the first time in history following a third-place finish at the OUA championship. "We won a game in the OUA Final Four. We won the bronze medal and we made it to Nationals. We achieved our goal of the season and now we've re-set our objectives."
"I just told the girls that we are so proud of their achievement and you continue making history with every single game, every single performance."

Brock will now move on to face the winner of the second opening-day duel between the Quebec champion Montreal Carabins and OUA finalist Ottawa Gee Gees, who blanked the Badgers 1-0 last Saturday in the OUA semi-finals.
The weather conditions were not the best as both teams battled through a constant heavy rain. But the field conditions remained good as each squad looked to take control of the match.
Van Bakel got the opening marker on a fine individual play in the eighth minute. She picked up a ball in the midfield and went up the right side of the park untouched. Capers keeper Jessica MacDermid (North River, N.S.) was caught slightly off her line as Van Bakel entered the penalty area. The Brock forward put the Badgers up 1-0 on a fine chip over top of MacDermid that sailed neatly into the top left corner of the net.
For the remainder of the half and much of the second frame, both teams had quality opportunities.
Then in the 89th minute it looked like Brock put the match away when Van Bakel scored her second of the day. She took advantage of a Cape Breton defender who slipped when she charged for the ball, went in alone and hammered the ball into the net.
The Capers went on the attack almost immediately after however. Cape Breton's Jennifer Sheppard of South Bar, N.S., picked up a ball after a scramble in front of the Badgers net and struck it soundly to make it a one-goal game going into injury time.
It was as close as the Capers would get as the final whistle sounded just after the Badgers started play.
The Badgers will have a day off before continuing their quest for a national title on Saturday at 1 p.m. PST. The Capers will continue play Friday at 11 a.m. on the consolation side.

GAME RECAP: MONTREAL 1, OTTAWA 0
The Ottawa Gee-Gees were humbled by the Montreal Carabins and Mother Nature Thursday in the second first-round match of the 2008 CIS women's soccer championship hosted by Trinity Western University. Fourth-year defender Marie-Michele Bouchard scored in a driving downpour to lead Montreal to a 1-0 win and a berth in Saturday's semi-final.
"It's very wet," said Bouchard, who sent a floating chip shot over the shoulder of Gee-Gees second-year goalkeeper Jess Charron in the 42nd minute for the lone goal before standing soaked and shaking on the field moments after the game. "In your brain you have to play strong and fight the whole time."
Montreal, ranked No. 1 in the last seven national coaches polls of the season, advances to Saturday's semi-final against upstart Brock at 1 p.m. PT. The Badgers upset reigning champion Cape Breton 2-1 earlier Thursday in their first-ever game at the CIS tournament.
Montreal, making its third appearance in the national championship since joining CIS in 2001, will need a win in one of its next two matches to top its previous best finish of fourth in 2004.
The Gee-Gees, making a 10th trip to the tourney in the 15-season history of the women's soccer program, miss out on the chance for an eighth national medal.
Charron, the second-year uOttawa goalkeeper, made seven stops as the Carabins pushed the Gee-Gees into a defensive posture from the opening whistle.
Montreal outshot Ottawa 8-2 and finished with three corners to none for the Gee-Gees.
"I was busy the first half that's for sure," said Charron. "We thought we had the potential to go further."
Montreal's CIS coach of the year Kevin McConnell spent much of the match looking dour. "I think we should have buried the match a little bit sooner," he said.
The Gee-Gees play Cape Breton in one consolation semi-final Friday at 11 a.m. PT.
"Montreal was the better team today," said Gee-Gees head coach Steve Johnson. "The first five minutes held some promise but after that they were all over us."
UOttawa lost to the Carabins 1-0 on the consolation side of the 2007 CIS tournament and dropped a 3-2 decision to Montreal in the 2008 pre-season.

GAME RECAP: TRINITY WESTERN 3, LAURIER 0
CIS rookie of the year Nikki Wright scored the game-winner in the 15th minute and Daniela Gerig added a pair as the tournament host Trinity Western University Spartans blanked the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 3-0 Thursday night in the last quarter-final duel of the 2008 CIS women's soccer championship.
Wright, a first-team all-Canadian from Cloverdale, B.C., and Gerig of Fort Langley, B.C., finished first and second in Canada West scoring during the regular season and have now combined for 23 goals in conference and post-season play.
Wright opened the scoring on a fine individual effort. She took the ball all the way from half on a breakaway, went around Laurier's Mal Woelley (Kinburn, Ont.) and slotted the ball into the open net.
Gerig made it 2-0 only four minutes later. The lanky forward took a neat pass from Wright that went across the goal area, and knocked it into the back of the Golden Hawks net.
Gerig got her second of the night near the midway point of the second half, in the 63rd minute, to send the large partisan crowd into a celebration. Gerig used a strong individual effort to split the Laurier defenders on the right side of the pitch before slotting the ball into the lower right side of the net.
The Spartans will meet rival Victoria in Saturday's second semi-final at 3:30 p.m. Pacific. The game will be a rematch of the Canada West gold-medal final, which the Vikes won 1-0 on penalty kicks (4-3) last Sunday in Victoria.
The OUA champion Golden Hawks head to the consolation side for a match Friday afternoon against the Dalhousie Tigers.
