WESTERN 2, WINDSOR 1
WINDSOR, Ont. - Playing under the lights of Alumni Field for the first time, the Windsor Lancers women's soccer team failed to convert on a number of scoring opportunities on their way to a 2-1 loss to the visiting Western Mustangs. While the team still remains winless on the season, there are signs of life from the young team as they controlled possession for most of the contest and had their chances to get a good result out of the contest.
Unfortunately, the Lancers came out of the gate slow as just 10 minutes into the game, Western took the lead on a free kick situation. The bending ball was headed in beautifully by Jessica Trejo (London, Ont.) past a helpless Rebecca Singer (Amherstburg, Ont.) to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
As the game progressed, Windsor started to dominate possession and kept the Mustangs hemmed in their half of the field for long periods of time. The best chance of the half for the Lancers was a great solo effort from forward Heather Daichendt (Windsor, Ont.). She turned her defender inside-out before blasting a shot at Mustang keeper Keltie Brigham (Regina, Sask.). Brigham dove and just got enough of the ball to send it wide of the far post.
Daichendt would have another opportunity five minutes into the second half. A ball played into the box by Amy Blencowe (Tecumseh, Ont.) found Daichendt but she was stopped again by Brigham.
Windsor would keep up the pressure and in the 60th minute were able to find the scoreboard. Tiffany Phillips (Mississauga, Ont.) took a great through ball and walked in untouched before slipping it into the Western net to tie the game at 1-1.
The lead would be short lived, however, as Western would get the goal right back just two minutes later. Off a diving save from Singer, the ball fell right to Alene Elisevich (Bloomfield, Mich.) who fired it up and over the Lancer keeper to restore the Mustangs lead.
Windsor refused to back down and off a corner in the 66th minute, an opportunity in front of the Mustangs net was fired off the crossbar, denying the Lancers the single point.
