LADY VEES SOCCER LOOK TO DETHROWN KINGSTON PAIR
The weekend is huge for the Lady Vees as they hope to keep pace for a playoff spot. Both games will be tough as the Kingston schools are notorious for taking advantage of their home fields. If the Lady Vees want to be successful they will need solid defending, anchored by Samantha Falcioni (Sudbury, Ont.) and Erica Duczminski (Sudbury), and quick counter attacks from rookies striker Lisa Watson (Newmarket, Ont.), first year midfielder Leanne Adams (Mississauga, Ont.) and spark plug, Katlyn Larue (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), while Meghan Hoffberg (Brampton, Ont.) must continue her stellar play between the pipes.
In Saturday's game the Lady Vees will look for much of the same as their last meeting with RMC, as they dominated play controlling all aspects in their 1-0 victory. RMC at 1-3-0 is a dangerous team but Laurentian must take three points if they want to remain in contention for a playoff spot in the hotly contested OUA East. With their 2-2-0 record the Lady Vees sit in a fifth place tie with the Nipissing Lakers only four points out of top spot, currently held by the two schools from the nation's capital, the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens.
The Queen's Gaels (3-2-0) sit three points ahead of the Lady Vees in the standings in a tie for third with the Toronto Varsity Blues, making the three points up for grabs versus Laurentian this weekend that much more crucial. Following last weekend's 2-0 loss to the Gaels the Lady Vees look to return the favour by walking away from Queen's with three points. The Lady Vees have never beaten the Gaels in their short history, often struggling when the two teams meet in Kingston, however with the importance of this weekend and emergence of the rookies and continued strong play of veterans this year's team looks to change that record.
Last season's trip to the fresh water capital did not turn out well for the Laurentian women as they only managed one of a possible six points. Lady Vees head coach Rob Gallo feels this year can be different. "Our team is resilient. We have a very good group of young women who have worked hard to compete. They will be mentally and physically ready for the challenge this weekend."
After the weekends games there is a potential for a huge shuffle in the standings, the Lady Vees made it their goal to come away with six points, and be near the top of the OUA East come Monday. They will play the RMC Paladins on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at Navy Bay Four, while Sunday they make the trek across town to face the Queen's Gaels also at 2:15 p.m. For up to date scores and stories on the Lady Vees, check out www.luvoyageurs.com.
