BLUES SPOIL RAMS HOME OPENER IN WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Blues had the first chance to get on the board in the 15th minute when first-year forward Jennifer Siu (London, Ont.) redirected a corner kick on the Ryerson goal. Rams keeper Misha Maric of Toronto, playing in her first OUA game, came up big with her first save of the contest. Less than two minutes later, Ryerson's Andrea Raso (Toronto) fired a shot from the top of the box that sailed just wide of the Toronto goal. The best chance of the opening half came in the 44th minute when Siu broke in alone and rang her shot off the bar.
The Rams came out strong in the second half, controlling the play for first 12 minutes. Despite a pair of quality chances, Ryerson was not able to find the back of the net. Erica Basso (Richmond Hill, Ont.) gave Toronto a 1-0 advantage in the 61st minute by converting a nifty crossing pass from Heidi Borgmann (Mississauga, Ont.). Eight minutes later, Siu scored the first goal of her OUA career to give Blues a 2-0 lead.
"We played well at times," said Ryerson head coach Peyvand Mossavat, the 2007 OUA East Coach of the Year. "But we can't play 50 or 60 minutes and expect to be successful. We have to maintain it for 90 minutes."
Keeper Mary Anne Barnes from Scarborough, Ont. recorded the victory and clean sheet for the Blues.
The Rams (0-1-0) will host the Nipissing Lakers (0-0-1) on Saturday at Lamport Stadium, while the Blues (1-0-0) face the Lakers in their home opener on Sunday at Varsity Stadium.
