OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: WINDSOR, WATERLOO TIED FOR FINAL OUA WEST PLAYOFF SPOT
Against Waterloo, the Lancers would start the game out strong. In the third minute, the Lancer attack drew Waterloo keeper Catherine Vanderburgh (Waterloo, Ont.) out of her net allowing Fiona Mattrasingh (Cambridge, Ont.) to hit the open cage for her first goal of the year.
Windsor would keep up the pressure and nearly extended their lead to two in the 11th minute. A cross from Mattrasingh found Heather Daichendt (Windsor, Ont.) all alone in the box but Vanderburgh just managed to deflect it over the bar.
The miss would prove costly as Waterloo would tie the game before the half. Danielle Deloyer (Stratford, Ont.) finished a great pass from Jocilyn Huiskamp (Petersburg, Ont.) to even the score at 1-1.
In the second half, the Lancers extended their lead in the 48th minute when Alissa Mazar (Tecumseh, Ont.) found herself in a great scoring area and capitalized for her first goal of the season.
Just when it looked like the Lancers were on their way to their first win of the year, Waterloo would spoil the party. Under 20 minute from time, the Warriors picked up their play and tied the game on Deloyer's second of the contest.
Late in the game, Waterloo had a chance to win it but Lancer keeper Rebecca Singer (Amherstburg, Ont.) stopped Rebecca Stewart (Mason, Mich.) on a breakaway to preserve the single point. On the day, Singer was solid as she made five saves for Windsor.
On Sunday, the first half saw neither team able to find the back of the net. The Lancers had the best opportunity as Tiffany Phillips (Mississauga, Ont.) found herself breaking in all alone on Guelph keeper Danielle Beck (Utopia, Ont.) but her shot was fired wide of the net.
Windsor would break through to start the second half. Just five minutes in, Cassandra Quayson (Mississauga, Ont.) would get her foot on the ball after some nice passing by the Lancers in the Guelph box for her first goal of the season.
Similar to the game against Waterloo, the Lancers would again give up the lead as in the 69th minute, Guelph would tie the game. Natalie Ackerman (Guelph, Ont.), on the receiving end of a great ball, managed to beat Singer to even the score.
Windsor, determined to get their first win on the year, did not back down and nearly went in front in the 83rd minute but the attempt from Heather Daichendt (Windsor, Ont.) hit the post and was scooped up by Beck before another Lancer could get to the loose ball. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
