OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP
TORONTO, Ont. - The No. 1-ranked York Lions women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to the McMaster Marauders 2-1 on Saturday.
Both teams came out with a lot of energy, keeping the game at a fast pace. Eight minutes in, Lions star forward Stefania Morra (Scarborough, Ont.) was awarded a penalty kick. Unfortunately, she was unable to capitalize as McMaster goalie Amy Holt made the save.
With three minutes left in the half, midfielder Alicia Donaldson (Mississauga, Ont.) sent a nice pass to Morra, who made no mistake and scored a goal. It was all McMaster after that as Leah Henderson and Kirsten Lowe tallied for the Marauders to give them the win.
The Marauders refused to back down, leading to a goal at the 58 minute mark when Henderson fired the ball passed York goalie Stephanie Bagnarol (Maple, Ont.). With the score tied at one apiece, both teams fought for possession of the ball, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. McMaster forward Lowe was able to find the back of the net, giving the Marauders the lead. York tried to make a comeback but was unsuccessful, leading to the team's first loss this season.

WESTERN 2, GUELPH 0
GUELPH, Ont. - The Western Mustangs won two games by shutout this weekend, their first two victories of the season, over the Guelph Gryphons 2-0 on Sept. 14 and Waterloo Warriors on Sept. 13.
Against Guelph, rookie goalkeeper Keltie Brigham made eight saves for the shutout.
"The field conditions were awful - with long grass, choppy ground," said assistant coach Adam Craig, "so we were forced to play a different style than we are usually accustomed to."
Cassy Lee opened the scoring in the 18th minute after receiving a through ball from Nyssa Laing.
"Cassy held the ball up and took the defender on by playing it past her and outrunning her," Craig said. "The (Guelph) goaltender came out and she slid the ball into the far corner.
Julia De Buono scored the insurance goal early in the second half, using her momentum to tip in a cross from Chantal Blais.
Brigham recorded her second consecutive shutout.

OTTAWA 3, RYERSON 1
OTTAWA, Ont. - Speedy fourth-year striker Courtney Luscombe had a grit (Gordie Howe) hat-trick - goal, assist and yellow card - Sunday afternoon in the Gee-Gees 3-1 win over Ryerson.
Luscombe, a five-foot-three sociology major from Ottawa, staked the Gee-Gees to a 1-0 lead with a point-blank blast for her first of the season in the ninth before sending a perfect cross through for third-year striker Trinidad Ruiz's empty-net header and the Gee-Gees third goal in the 23rd.
"I hit it in a good position," said Luscombe. "I know she is good with her head."
Luscombe was yellow carded in the 45th after becoming entangled with a Ryerson defender.
"She was on my feet," said Luscombe. "It was a little 'get off me' type of thing - and it's not going to happen again."
Fourth-year transfer Catherine Scott also scored her first regular season goal for the Gee-Gees in the 11th off a cross attempt that ended up in the net past third-year Ryerson goalkeeper Michelle Smiciklas.
Tessa Dimitrakopoulos, a third-year Ryerson forward, scored on a penalty in the 53rd for the Rams.

SUDBURY, Ont. – Kate McKenna (Oakville, Ont.) recorded her second shutout of the season as she backstopped the Queen's Gaels women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees on Sunday. McKenna stopped six shots and a key penalty kick in the 32nd minute to keep the Lady Vees scoreless.
Weather was a factor in this match-up as the remnants of the much weakened hurricane Ike moved through Ontario on Sunday.
Rookies Felicia Pereira (Simcoe, Ont.) and Cristina Senese (Mississauga, Ont.) were the offensive punch for the Gaels as Pereira opened the scoring. Senese tipped in a rebound for her first goal in OUA soccer.

OTTAWA, Ont. - The Carleton University Ravens defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, 1-0, in an excellent showcase of OUA East Women’s Soccer action between two of the top programs in the division. The game was played at Carleton University’s Ravens’ Field .
The game was a classic tight defensive match between two very skilled soccer squads and featured two of the best OUA goalkeepers in Carleton University’s fifth year veteran Kate Shaughnessy, (Ottawa, Ont.) and Toronto’s fourth year veteran Mary Anne Barnes (Scarborough, Ont.). The game had excellent flow especially in the first half before the rain came and slowed the second half considerably.
Both teams challenged each others defences and had several good opportunities to open the scoring which did not happen under extra time of the first half when Carleton’s Shayla LeVecchia, (Ottawa, Ont.) fed Aisha Stinson, (Ottawa, Ont.) the ball right outside the Toronto box. Stinson beat a Blues defender and scored a beauty over the head of Barnes, into the far side of Toronto’s net.
In the second half, both teams continued to test each others defences and goalkeepers, then with 25 minutes remaining Ottawa’s contribution to Hurricane Ike changed the flow of the final quarter of the match, as both teams were battling the rain and the puddles on the field as much as they were battling each other. Carleton would hold onto their one goal victory.
Shaughnessy made 5 saves to earn her second victory of the weekend and her first shutout of the season. The Ravens keeper now has 10 career shutouts in two seasons with Carleton.

The York Lions rebounded on Sunday and got back in the win column with a 1-0 victory over the Brock Badgers. Donaldson scored the game's only goal to propel York to its third win of the season.
The Lions once again got an impressive performance from rookie goalie Bagnarol, who made some big saves to preserve the shutout. With the win, the Lions avenged last year's loss to the Badgers, York's only defeat in the regular season.

OTTAWA, Ont. - It wasn’t a pleasant end of game Saturday afternoon at the Sports Complex after the Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 shutout to OUA East rival Toronto.
"I think some players let us down," said coach Steve Johnson after the Gee-Gees spotted Toronto a pair of goals in the first half and could not push through a stingy defence in the late going.
The Varsity Blues won a third straight game to take over sole possession of first-place in the OUA East.
"I would question whether we outworked them," Johnson said.
Toronto scored on each of two first-half shots. Third-year striker Melanie Seabra looped a shot over Gee-Gees second-year goalkeeper Jess Charron in the 10th minute and third-year midfielder Christina Fantozzi tapped in the Blues second goal in the 42nd.
The Gee-Gees out-shot Toronto 6-2 and were ahead on corners 3-0 through the first 45 minutes. uOttawa finished ahead in shots 9-7 and in corners six to none.
Gee-Gees fourth-year co-captain Katie Lugg rang an open shot off the cross-bar in the 88th.
"We can’t blame it all on luck," said Lugg. "Today I think we just lacked that jump that we usually have."

OTTAWA, Ont. - The Carleton University Women’s Soccer Team defeated the Ryerson University Rams 3-1 on Saturday.
The game opened with attacking spells at both ends of the field before Carleton steadily applied more pressure on their opponents, resulting in several great scoring opportunities. The first came in the 25th minute when Amanda Ngwafusi (Ottawa, Ont.) played a ball across the six-yard box which the Ravens were unable to put away. Minutes later Erika Battistella (Ottawa, Ont.) won possession in scoring distance only to send her shot narrowly over the crossbar.
The opening goal of the match came when midfielder Aisha Stinson (Ottawa, Ont.) beat a defender in the box before finishing her shot at the far post past Rams goalkeeper Michelle Smiciklas (Oakville, Ont.) in the 36th minute. In the closing minutes of the half the Ravens sent a shot just wide of the far post, entering halftime with a 1-0 lead.
An exciting second half ensued with a number of scoring chances for both teams. In the 55th minute a Ryerson striker was held in the box and awarded a penalty kick against Carleton goalkeeper Kate Shaughnessy (Ottawa, Ont.) who substituted into the game at the half, to make her 2008 debut. Shaughnessy dove the correct side on the penalty shot but was unable to stop Tessa Dimitrakopoulos’ (Richmond Hill, Ont.) goal which drew the opponents level 1-1.
Carleton began to dictate play and in the 72nd minute a Ravens’ goal was called back for being offside. However, just five minutes later, Gabrielle Charboneau (Ottawa, Ont.) put away a shot from 25 yards to put the Ravens ahead 2-1. Charboneau once again found herself within scoring distance, only to chip a ball to the far post for Ngwafusi to head past the Rams goalkeeper.

Guelph Gryphons women’s striker Heather Kendall (Newmarket, Ont.) scored two goals to help her team win their first soccer game of the season against the Windsor Lancers 2-1 on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
At 2:42, Kendall pounded the ball into the top right hand corner to put the Gryphons out in front. Windsor answered when Marianne Wright (Windsor, Ont.) capitalized on a free kick to score the lone Lancer goal of the game.
Despite the rain, Guelph dominated with shots on net in the second half. Kendall struck again in the 55th minute when she curved the ball around Lancer’s goalie Rebecca Singer (Amherstburg, Ont.).

BROCK 2, LAURIER 2
WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University women's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie versus the No. 10 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday afternoon on the road.
Laurier opened the scoring 20 minutes into the contest as Ali Mckee (Bracebridge, Ont.) recorded her second goal of the season.
Despite the slippery wet conditions in the second half, the Badgers would answer back with the next two goals both coming from Lisa D’Aguanno (Richmond Hill, Ont.), her first and second of the season.
The Golden Hawks battled hard to gain possession late in the contest, and it was Sara Hopper (Thornhill, Ont.) adding her second goal of the year as she who would beat Brock goalkeeper Syreeta Rhoden (Niagara Falls, Ont.) tying the game 2-2.

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Angela Sullivan (Scarborough, Ont.), and Kelli Chamberlain (North Bay, Ont.) scored for the Queen’s women’s soccer team losing 3-2 in a heartbreaker to Nipissing.
Sullivan and Chamberlain tried to rally the team by scoring seven minutes apart late in the game but were stopped short. The clincher for Nipissing came when Stephanie Stubbert scored at the 68 minute to put Nipissing up 3-1. The Gaels responded with Chamberlan’s goal at the 75 minute, but could not muster additional offence.

SUDBURY, Ont. - The Laurentian Lady Vees topped the RMC Paladins 1-0 in the third annual Jamieson Natural Kick for the Cure on Saturday. Lisa Watson notched her first career goal in the blue and gold while Meghan Hoffberg backstopped the Lady Vees to their first win of the season.
Laurentian came out of the gates flying wearing their pink jerseys in support of breast cancer research. Early pressure forced the Paladins back on their heels, and Watson (Newmarket, Ont.) found the back of the net in the 13th minute on Laurentian's fifth shot of the match. Watson rushed down the right side beating her defender, deked around the goalie before firing the ball into the yawning net. It was the first goal of Watson's young university career.
In the second half the Lady Vees continued to keep momentum on their side. They dominated ball possession and kept creating chances for themselves. Watson, Leanne Adams (Mississauga, Ont.) and Corrine Kandravy (Ottawa, Ont.) all had multiple chances to add to the Laurentian lead. RMC goalkeeper Erica Pessotto (Milton, Ont.) was the busiest player on the field making 19 saves on the day. Hoffberg (Brampton, Ont.) recorded her first shutout of the season, making four saves as the Lady Vees got into the win column. With the win, the Lady Vees move to 3-0-0 all time in Kick for the Cure games where they don their pink uniforms.
"The girls dominated the game, and it was nice to see," said Rob Gallo, the Lady Vees bench boss. "We created a lot of opportunities and that's what I like."
