OPACIC STARS IN GAELS MEN'S BASKETBALL DEBUT
KINGSTON, Ont. - In his first game as a Gael, Ozren Opacic of Burlington, Ont. poured in a career-high 27 points as Queen's thumped Royal Military College (RMC) 112-49 on Tuesday evening in OUA men's basketball.
Opacic, who last played in 2006-07 with the Ryerson Rams, played just 16 minutes tallying three rebounds, two steals and converting 66 percent of his shots. Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey had 26 points and converted seven three-point shots on eight attempts. Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. posted 17 points and made eight rebounds in the win.
Queen's built a 18-17 lead after one quarter, but blew the game wide open with a 36-point outburst before the half and holding RMC to just six points in the second quarter. Queen's continued its dominance over RMC in the second half posting 60 points breaking 100 points late in the fourth quarter.
The win marked the first time the Gaels cracked the 100-point barrier since the OUA went to a 16-team format in 2001-2002.
RMC's Nicolas Cooke of Toronto was the top scorer for the Paladins recording 15 points in 31 minutes of play.
Queen's record improves to 4-5 while the Paladins remain winless with nine defeats. The Gaels hold fourth place in the OUA East and are just two points behind the University of Toronto who are in third.
This weekend the Gaels are set to play their final two games inside the Physical Education Centre on campus at Queen's University. Queen's host the University of Toronto on Friday night and then will say good bye to Bartlett Gymnasium on Saturday as they contend against Ryerson. Admission for Saturday's game is free with a non-perishable food item.
Both games tip-off at 8 p.m. and follow the women's games which begin at 6 p.m.
