Guelph, 87 @ Waterloo, 80 Box Score
The Guelph Gryphons started the fourth quarter with an 18-6 run and Waterloo was unable to mount a full comeback and lost an OUA league game to the Gryphons by a score of 87-80. The outcome was decided at the free throw line as Guelph hit on 30 of 38 attempts, while Waterloo was successful on just 14 of 23.
The first half was a tight game as neither team was able to put together a sustained run. Waterloo momentarily held a six point advantage to start the second quarter, but Guelph came back to hold a 39-36 lead at half time.
After Guelph opened a 7 point lead early in the third, Waterloo went on a 12-0 run to reclaim the lead and hold a two point advantage heading into the final frame. The Guelph start in the fourth provided a 10 point cushion. Waterloo mounted a spirited comeback, but 4 for 8 shooting from the line did not help their cause.
Waterloo was again unable to contain Mike Petralla, as he hit for 32 points to lead all scorers. Dan McCarthy added 18 points for the Gryphons. Tim Rossy (Winnipeg, Man.) had a career best 24 points to lead the Warriors. Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) added 18 points.
With the loss Waterloo drops to 6-8 on the season and are tied with the Western Mustangs for the final playoff position. Guelph improves to 5-9 and are just one game behind.

Western, 67 @ Laurier, 75 Box Score
Laurier was back at home on Saturday looking to continue their stellar play this season. Laurier sports a 6-1 record at home, with their only loss being the 88-80 loss to the No.1 nationally ranked Carleton Ravens. They posted a 75-67 win over the visiting Western Mustangs.
The first quarter saw Laurier jump out to an early 28-16 lead thanks to a solid combined effort from the starters and Jamar Forde (Mississauga, Ont.) who came off the bench to score five points in the quarter. The second frame saw Western slow down the Laurier offence and battle back with a 14-11 quarter that cut the Laurier's lead to nine. The Hawks rebounded in the third, depending on outstanding offensive rebounding to get them the second chances they needed to stop a Mustang comeback. The Hawks took a 58-45 lead into the final quarter, but five straight Western baskets narrowed Laurier's lead to just four points. However, that was as close as the Mustangs would get, as Laurier held on to defeat Western 75-67.
Laurier had a great rebounding game, pulling down 23 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second chance points. Western shot an impressive 47.2% from the field, while Laurier shot 41.9%, however, Laurier had 21 more shots than the Mustangs.
Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.) once again led the Laurier attack scoring 20 points and adding six rebounds. Max Allin (Chatham, Ont.) had another solid overall game scoring 14 points while adding nine assists and seven rebounds. Patrick Donnelly (Oakville, Ont.) continued his strong freshman campaign with an 11 point, 14 rebound performance. Rookie Jamar Forde was great off the bench, scoring 11 points for the Golden Hawks, while Matt Buckley (Waterloo, Ont.) had eight points and eight rebounds.
Andrew Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) scored game-high 29 points for the Mustangs.

Lakehead, 81 @ McMaster, 77 Box Score
Lakehead climbed the standings one more notch on Saturday evening, as they defeated McMaster 81-77, and move into a tie for first place in the OUA West with the Windsor Lancers at 11-3.
Lakehead was able to come out of Burridge gym alive on Saturday night, although it was a bit of a slug fest, or perhaps 'whistle-fest' could be a more accurate term, with 50 fouls being called (25 per team) in 40 minutes of play. Jamie Searle and Ryan Thompson fouled out for Lakehead, while Scott Laws, Cam Michaud and Nathan Pelech collected 5 fouls each for McMaster, whose roster was already trimmed down from the night before due to injuries. Scott Brittain, Taylor Black and Victor Raso were not dressed for the Marauders.
As he has done in the past, Venzal Russell stepped up for Lakehead, connecting on 9 of his 19 shots to score 24 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds. He got help on the glass from Yoosrie Salhia who pulled down 11 boards to go with 7 points. After struggling to find his rhythm in the past couple games, Joseph Jones hit for 16 points (4 threes) and 8 rebounds.
McMaster's shortened roster fought valiantly in the third quarter to take the lead, but could not convert the clutch plays in the final minutes, including a back-court violation on an in-bounds play that could have gotten them the lead with less than a minute to play. Cam Michaud was top scorer with 22, 8 of those from the free throw line. Kenan Etale had 19, and seemed to be able to get to the basket at will against the LU defense. Top rebounder for MAC was Matt Willusz with 8, although Lakehead won the battle on the glass 47-34.

York, 52 @ Carleton, 84 Box Score
The No. 1 Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team improved its record to 14-0 Saturday night, coming away with an 84-52 victory over the York University Lions at the Ravens’ Nest.
The Ravens were on their heels to start the game, with York taking a quick 8-1 lead. Carleton regrouped following a timeout and was able to narrow the gap at the end of the quarter. The Lions still had the advantage though, ahead 15-13.
The Ravens dominated in the second quarter thanks to better ball movement and perimeter shooting, as well as tighter defence. Three Ravens had reached double digits at halftime, including Philip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) and Mike Kenny (Ottawa), who were a combined 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. Kyle Smendziuk (Kanata, Ont.) had 10 first-half rebounds as the Ravens outscored the Lions 33-6 in the quarter for a 46-21 lead.
The Ravens continued to build on their lead to start the third, going up by as much as 28 points. York didn’t give up though and the Lions found their offensive game. They outscored Carleton 25-18 in the third, making it an 18-point game heading into the final quarter, down 64-46.
The fourth, however, belonged to the Ravens again. They outscored the Lions 20-6 for the 84-52 victory.
Five Ravens reached double digits, led by Hinz, who had a game-high 16 points. Smendziuk finished with a double-double, sinking 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Kenny and Scrubb finished with 13 points each, while Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) added 11.

Laurentian, 84 @ Ottawa, 87 Box Score
It was a huge comeback win for the Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall tonight as they ousted Laurentian 87-84 in their typical last-minute fashion.
The Gee-Gees came flying out of the gate into the first quarter, opening up to an early 12 point lead. The Voyageurs would push back to tie it up and only a late three-pointer by third-year guard Warren Ward, London, Ont., would give the Gee-Gees a three point lead after ten minutes. Laurentian held a slim lead through much of the second and were up by five at half.
It was an elusive lead dangled just out of reach of the Gee-Gee, as they trailed Laurentian by just a few baskets for much of the second half. But the perseverance and determination of the Gee-Gees would pay off as they would steal the lead at just the right moment in the last two minutes. A few power defensive stops, and the Gee-Gees would capture their much sought after victory.
First-year guard Johnny Berhanemeskel, Ottawa, Ont., led the Gee-Gees in scoring with 18 points, though there were five Gee-Gees in the double digits for points. First-year point guard Yacob Issayas, Vancouver, B.C, was the fourth quarter hero for the Gee-Gees, stacking on 11 points in the final frame and going three for four from behind the arc.

RMC, 43 @ Ryerson, 81 Box Score
Jahmal Jones scored a game-high 27 points as the Ryerson Rams men's basketball team dominated the RMC Paladins in an 81-43 romp at Kerr Hall Gym on Saturday evening. The Hero Burger "Hero of the Game" Steve Williams recorded his first double-double of the season, tallying 11 points and 12 rebounds, while veteran Ryan McNeilly pitched in 13 from the floor in the victory.
The Rams (6-8) have won four consecutive games, and are undefeated since losing both games in Ottawa two weekends ago. Conversely, the Paladins are in the midst of another winless season. RMC has not recorded a victory since November 2006.
The Rams smothered the Paladins throughout the first half. After jumping out to a 12-3 advantage and taking a nine point lead at the end of the first, Ryerson limited the visitors to a measly four points in the second period. The Paladins allowed 21 straight points before finally sinking a basket near the end of the quarter.
"We got off to a real good first half," said Rams Head Coach Roy Rana. Ryerson took a 29-point lead into the halftime break. Rana commented on the importance of keeping such a lopsided affair as clean as possible. "(The game) started getting a little chippy at one point, and I didn't want it to turn ugly."
As the second quarter wore on and the game began to get out of reach for the Paladins, the physical play seemed to pick up a bit more, and Rana didn't let his squad off the hook so easily either. "I thought our guys stopped playing a little bit (too). That was frustrating, but you're in a difficult situation trying to manage a game and not let it get (out of hand)."
The Paladins found their shot a bit more in the second-half, and that gave the contest a bit of its flow back, and fortunately shifted it away from a more physical, frustrating event. The Rams had four players in double-digits, including Williams, Jones and Ryan McNeilly. Jordon Gauthier (Windsor, Ont.) also sunk 11, adding six boards on the night. Nicolas Cooke was the best Paladin, dropping 19 points while shooting close to 47% from the field.
For Rana, he was pleased with getting most of his roster into the contest, and also that he had a chance to give two key players some time off to heal. "Luke (Staniscia) and Ola (Adegboruwa) are both banged up, so it was an opportunity to give them a break and let them get fresh and healthy."
The Rams are in a logjam in the OUA East after tonight, tied with both Ottawa and Laurentian in wins, and just one game back of the third-place York Lions. The final three games of their home-stand may have a strong influence on where they end up in the playoff picture. Ryerson will take on the Toronto Varsity Blues (9-5) on Wednesday, before meeting up with York and Laurentian; teams who they defeated one weekend ago.
