NO. 3 RAVENS TOPS IN OUA EAST AGAIN
The first quarter saw both teams coming out shooting in this showdown for the OUA East crown. Warren Ward (London, Ont.) started the Gee-Gees off on the right foot with the first shot of the game. Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto) followed with a three, putting the Gee-Gees up by five. With a feed from Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) in the paint, Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) managed to tie it up 9-9. After a three from Willy Manigat (Montreal), the Ravens took the lead for the first time with two to go. The whistle saw the Ravens leading 19-17. Ward led the scoring with a perfect shooting percentage at nine points.
Four minutes into the second, Aaron Chapman (Bloomfield, Ont.) capitalized on his foul shots to bring the Ravens to their largest lead, 25-19. Ward responded at the other end to bring the lead down to two. With three minutes left, Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) got around Gibson-Bascombe to hit a two in the paint bringing the lead up to nine. The half finished with the Ravens leading 39-30.
The third saw some major shots from the Ravens, including Mike Kenny (Ottawa) hitting a three with a minute into the half, Elliot Thompson (Fredericton) hitting a runner to bring the lead to 15 and Manigat drilling a three to bring the lead to 18, forcing Gee-Gees head coach, Dave DeAveiro, to call a timeout to regroup. The Gee-Gees were able to chip away at the lead to come within eight at the end of the third. Thompson led the Ravens at the whistle with 15.
Donnie Gibson (Kingston, Ont.) kept momentum up for the Gee-Gees at the start of the fourth, bringing the Ravens lead down to six less than a minute into the quarter. The Gee-Gees opted for a full court press with a little over four to go. Ryan Malcolm Campbell (Mississauga, Ont.) knocked down two foul shots to bring Ottawa within four with a little over a minute to go. With an intentional foul called on Thompson, Gibson-Bascombe hit one of the two foul shots to bring the Gee-Gees within three and gain possession with seconds on the clock. Taking advantage of the possession, Gibson hit a solid three to tie up the game 75-75 with 1.1 seconds remaining, putting the action into overtime.
Ward hit the first two into overtime before fouling out. He finished with a game-high 27 points. Hobin put up a big two with less than a minute to go but Gee-Gee Kemeish Edwards (Brampton, Ont.) hit a two on the other end to bring the game back to 86-86. Louis Gauthier (Ottawa) was called in the paint, taking McCleery to the foul line. He would hit one of the two. The Gee-Gees had one last chance to win the game, but they couldn't get a shot off and the Ravens held on to win the game 87-86.
Four Ravens hit double digits: Thompson took the team high with 22, Hobin followed with 20, McCleery finished with 15 and Chapman stood at 12.
The Ravens have now won 10 straight match-ups against the Gee-Gees and will hold on to their top spot in the OUA, finishing the regular season with an impressive 20-2 record.
The Ravens will host their first playoff game on Feb. 27 but await the results of the OUA East quarter-final match-ups to find out their opponent.
