RYERSON'S RANA LEADS CANADA TO ANOTHER BRONZE
led Team Canada to a bronze medal finish at the 2010 Nike Global
Challenge last week in Portland, Oregon. It was the second time in a
month that Rana has coached Canada to a bronze medal. In July, Rana
guided the Cadet Men's National Team (CMNT) to a historic third place
finish at the FIBA U17 World Championship.
The 2010 Nike Global Challenge Canadian squad featured members of
Canada*s Cadet and Junior Men*s National Teams. The eight-team,
12-game tournament also included squads from Brazil, France, an All-Asia
team and four regional teams from the U.S.A.
Canada opened the tournament with a thrilling 105-100 double overtime
win over USA East. In the sem-finals, the Canadians fell 113-99 to
eventual champion USA South before claiming the bronze with a 85-75
victory over France.
*This is a very satisfying way to end a very busy summer of
international basketball at the youth level and I look forward to more
success in the near future," said Rana. "They are a great group of kids
and Canada should be very proud."
Rana will now turn his focus to Canada's Senior Men*s National Team
(SMNT), as he was named to the coaching staff as an advanced scout. The
team opened training camp on Aug. 3 in preparation for the upcoming FIBA
World Championship Aug. 28-Sept. 12 in Turkey. Training camp invitees
include Canadian NBA stars such as Joel Anthony of the Miami Heat and
Andy Rautins of the New York Knicks.
Ryerson Rams assistant coach Fatih Akser was also selected to the Team
Canada coaching staff. Akser, who is entering his second season with the
Rams and is a native of Turkey, will serve as video coordinator for the
Canadian squad.
