CROSSTOWN RIVAL MATCH-UP IN PLACE FOR OUA EAST MEN'S HOOPS FINAL
Across town, the No. 2 Carleton Ravens defeated the York Lions 78-65 on Saturday to host next week's match-up against the Gee-Gees.
The Gee-Gees secured a comfortable lead from the start, leading 26-13 at the end of the first quarter after second-year guard Warren Ward (London, Ont.) sank a three point buzzer beater.
The Gaels picked things up in the second quarter, outscoring the Gee-Gees 15-12, to bring the game to within 10 points before heading into halftime.
The Gee-Gees continued to dominate in the second half, managing to maintain the lead and go on to win the game 77-61.
The Gee-Gees shot 46.2 percent from the paint and 36.0 percent from the three point line, while the Gaels were 41.7 percent and 30.4 percent, respectively.
Leading the game in points was fifth-year guard and Gee-Gees all-time leading scorer Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto) with 25 points and nine rebounds. Ward also contributed an impressive 20 points and nine rebounds.
"We had a good game plan coming into the game, and we came on, executed and played hard," said Gibson-Bascombe. "I'm looking forward to next week's game [against Carleton]."
Fourth-year forward Mitch Leger (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels in their effort with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Ottawa head coach Dave DeAveiro was pleased with the team's defensive effort. "The defence was good. We made them work for every point."
Equally satisfying to DeAveiro was the second line's efforts on the court. "We had a major contribution from the bench tonight," he said.
"It was terrific."
The Gee-Gees will now travel across town to the Raven's Nest next Saturday, March 6, to battle it out for the OUA East title. Game time is yet to be determined.
