OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 8 THUNDERWOLVES, NO. 9 LANCERS GO TO OVERTIME
With the loss, the Lancers move to 10-5 in conference play and remain in second place in the OUA West Division. They now sit a game ahead of McMaster and two games ahead of Waterloo and Western in the standings.
On Friday night, Lakehead (12-3) jumped out to the early lead thanks to some solid outside shooting from their perimeter players. The Thunderwolves outscored the Lancers 24-18 in the quarter.
Windsor would bounce back in the second as Lien Phillip and Isaac Kuon combined to help their team outscore Lakehead 24-14 in the quarter for a 42-38 halftime lead.
The Thunderwolves responded in the second half with some inspired play as senior guard Jamie Searle was dialled in from long range, helping his team re-take the lead at 60-58.
The visitors extended their lead to 97-71 late in the fourth quarter before a furious Lancer comeback brought the crowd to their feet.
The Lancers got five points from Kuon and a then a late three pointer from Andre Smyth with only seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, Lakehead's Searle reeled off a trio of three-pointers from long range to help his team hold on for the 89-87 overtime victory.
In the loss, Kuon finished with 25 points and five rebounds while Nigel Johnson-Tygther added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Lakehead's Searle led all scorers with 29 points.
The Lancers and Thunderwolves will be back in action on Saturday night for game two of their weekend doubleheader. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
Saturday night's game will also be part of Breast Cancer Awareness weekend as the Department of Athletics will be selling special pink Lancer t-shirts with proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
CARLETON 75, TORONTO 53
At Carleton, the No. 2 Ravens (15-1) continue to soar, defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues 75-53.
Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) led the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Ravens teammates Michael Kenny contributed 14 points, while Willy Manigat (Montreal) scored 11 points.
Patrick Sewell (London, Ont.) led the Varsity Blues (7-8) with a team-high 13 points.
OTTAWA 82, RYERSON 73
At Ottawa, the No. 5 Gee-Gees (13-3) bounced back from a Wednesday loss to Carleton by defeating the Ryerson Rams (6-9) at home 82-73.
Josh Gibson-Bascombe led with a game-high 26 points for the Gee-Gees. Teammate Donnie Gibson chipped in with 17 points.
Ryerson's Boris Bakovic (Toronto) earned a double-double in a losing effort, with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
QUEEN'S 87, LAURENTIAN 81
At Queen's, Michel Leger scored 24 points and added 16 rebounds as the Gaels (8-8) upended the Laurentian Voyageurs 87-81.
Gaels teammates Baris Ondul (Istanbul, Turkey) and Ozren Opacic (Burlington, Ont.) scored 17 and 13 points, respectively.
Georges Serresse (Sudbury, Ont.) scored a game-high 25 points for the Voyageurs (5-10).
YORK 88, RMC 71
At RMC, the York Lions (3-12) defeated the host Paladins 88-71.
Ostap Choliy (Oakville, Ont.) and Stefan Haynes (North York, Ont.) both scored 16 points for the Lions.
Nicolas Cooke (Toronto) led the Paladins (0-16) with 22 points.
