Guelph Gryphons @ Carleton Ravens
The Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team grabbed an impressive 90-51 win over the University of Guelph Gryphons in the 2010-11 season opener at the Ravens’ Nest Friday night.
With Willy Manigat (Montreal) dropping a two, followed by a three, the Ravens would waste no time taking the lead in the first. Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) grabbed a steal and laid the ball in to make it a seven-point game. The end of the first saw the Ravens taking a 10-point lead.
Carleton continued to dominate in the second, playing tight defence and finishing their shots on the other end. Phil Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) had an impressive first 20 minutes, grabbing 18 points at the whistle. By the end of the half, Carleton had stretched its lead to 24, up 48-24.
Manigat and Elliot Thompson (Fredericton) found success at the 3-point line in the third, leaving Guelph little chance of shutting down the impressive Ravens run. The quarter ended 69-41.
The Ravens held onto the momentum in the fourth and shut down the Guelph offence, giving the visiting team no hope of catching up before the final whistle. With Kyle Smendziuk (Kanata, Ont.) and Scrubb finding success at the line, the Ravens would outshoot the Gryphons and grab a 91-50 win.
Brock Badgers @ Ottawa Gee-Gees
The Brock University men's basketball team (6-3 overall, 1-0 OUA) opened the 2010-11 OUA regular season with a 64-62 victory over the Ottawa GeeGees Friday night at Montpetit Hall.
With the score tied 62-62, with under over a minute left in regulation, first year head coach Brad Rootes would call a timeout to draw up a play. On the inbound pass, the Badgers would go to sophomore Anto Raic (Welland, Ont.) who would execute knocking down the jumper putting Brock up 64-62.
Ottawa's Jacob Gibson-Bascombe's jumper to tie it with just over five seconds remaining in regulation would not fall as the Badgers escaped with a two-point road victory to open the season.
Brock had three players in double figures led by senior Andrew Kraus (Markham, Ont.) who recorded 16 points including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Junior Mark Gibson (Toronto, Ont.) contributed with 12 points and four rebounds with senior Mike Cruickshank (Toronto, Ont.) adding 11 points and six rebounds in the victory.
The Badgers defense gave the GeeGees offensive leader Warren Ward problems all night as he added just seven points which included a dismal 2-for-13 from the field.
Leading the GeeGees was Louis Gauthier who registered 15 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double. Also in double figures were Johny Berhan and Ryan Malcolm-Campbell who finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Ottawa won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Brock 49-34. Brock shot 36.1% (22-for-61) from the field and 38.5% (10-for-26) from three-point range. Ottawa shot 32.4% (23-for-71) from the field and struggled at the charity stripe shooting a dismal 41.7% (10-for-24).
McMaster Marauders @ Ryerson Rams
Rookie Jahmal Jones shined in his first regular season game wearing the blue and gold, scoring a game-high 24 points and leading the Rams to a 75-70 victory over the McMaster Marauders in front of an excited Kerr Hall Gym crowd on Friday night.
Down most of the game, Ryerson took the lead with just over two minutes to go in the fourth thanks to a clutch three-pointer from another Rams rookie, Jelane Pryce. They would take that lead right down to the final buzzer, winning their home opener.
The Rams scored 29 points off of McMaster's turnovers, and outscored the Marauders bench by 16 points down the stretch.
McMaster grabbed the lead in the first quarter, going up by as much as 10 points. Kenan Etale was hot early, hitting a number of three-pointers to expand the Marauder lead. Jones then scored five straight points for his team as Ryerson fought their way back into the game before half-time, down only 37-35 at the break.
The Marauders would hold their lead for much of the second half, and actually increased the advantage to seven early in the fourth. However, Jones would spur the Rams once again, hitting a crucial three-pointer to stop a McMaster streak. Ryerson would score five more unanswered points, bringing the deficit to one before Pryce put them in front.
Kris Montaque and Pryce also came up with two blocks to keep the score close, and McMaster could only foul in the last minute and hope for Ryerson to struggle from the line.
Jones and Montaque each hit one of their two shots; just enough to pull the Marauders out of reach.
Ryerson's rookies tallied 53 of the team's 75 points, which doesn't include newcomer Ola Adegboruwa's 13 points, since he is a transfer student and technically in his third year of eligibility.
The Rams also had to fight through a physical game, as the Marauders were not afraid to throw their weight around and put bodies on the floor.
Ryerson lost three rotation players early in the contest. Fifth-year guard Ryan McNeilly and 6'7" Bjorn Michaelsen on the very first possession of the game collided heavily with McNeilly's head smashing into Michaelsen's mouth causing the freshman center to lose three teeth, while McNeilly suffered a significant gash in his head. Later in the first, 6'8" Matt Lapointe sprained his ankle and did not return.
Lakehead Thunderwolves @ Toronto Varsity Blues
Five different players hit double digits as the Varsity Blues men’s basketball team opened their 2010-11 season with a convincing 87-72 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, November 5 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Varsity Blues player of the game Anthony De Giorgio tallied 17 points, going 2-for-3 from three-point land and 5-for-7 from the line. The fifth-year guard added a game-high eight assists and six rebounds, while fellow veteran and Toronto native Justin Holmes had 15 points on opening night.
Both Toronto native Alex Hill and Sean Nickel of Kitchener, Ont., recorded 13 points, while fourth-year forward Drazen Glisic of Sarajevo, BIH, had 10 points and led all players with seven boards in the win.
The Blues rallied from a 25-20 first-quarter deficit and held Lakehead to single digits in the second frame. Holmes and Hill rallied the troops towards the end of the first half, combining for 10 points in the last five minutes to gain a 38-34 lead at halftime.
The Thunderwolves, led by fifth-year guard Jamie Searle of Belleville, Ont., fought back to take a three-point lead; however, some handy work from Hill would even the score at 47-47 midway through the third quarter.
De Giorgio then took control and never looked back, draining seven points in just over a minute to ignite a lead that would not extinguish. A Nickel three-pointer capped off the third as the Blues built a 61-54 lead heading into the final frame.
Lakehead attempted a come back and brought the game within two in the first two minutes. Searle and Petawawa, Ont., native Brendan King led the Thunderwolves with 11 of their 18 fourth-quarter points but it wasn’t enough as Toronto regained control with a solid team effort and pulled out the convincing 15-point victory.
Windsor Lancers @ Laurentian Voyageurs
e Windsor Lancers perimeter shooting proved to be too much for the Laurentian Voyageurs as they took home a 77-65 win on Saturday night.
The Lancers started out strong taking the first possession of the game using it to propel them to an early 14-5 lead. The Lancers continued to press the Voyageur defense and were able to extend their lead to 14, ending the first quarter with a score of 24-10.
Laurentian raised their level of play to start the second quarter. On an early Lancer possession, Laurentian stole the ball and moved it down the court, leading to kick off a 14-6 run for the Voyageurs. Laurentian continued their strong play with good defense and rebounding to end the half down 37-35.
In the first half, Laurentian shot 13-31 (41.9%) from the field with the Lancers shooting 15-36 (41.7%) and 7-13 (53.8%) from beyond the arc.
Windsor opened the second half with back to back threes and an 11-0 run. After a Laurentian timeout the teams battled back and forth with Windsor outscoring the Voyageurs 22-14 in the quarter to take a 59-49 lead into the fourth quarter.
Windsor continued to hit three pointers and was able to extend their lead to 13 with five minutes remaining. A slam dunk by Monty Hardware with just over two minutes to play put an exclamation point on the Lancer victory over the Voyageurs by a score of 77-65.
Isaac Kuon had another game high 22 points, while Lien Phillip chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double in the Lancer victory. Tychon Carter-Newman had a good game for the Voyageurs, scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Mike Hull added 12 points and 6 rebounds.
The Lancers hit 13-25 (52%) from three point land while the Voyageurs shot 4-16 (25%).
Western Mustangs @ York Lions
York University Lions point guard David Tyndale had the arena buzzing with excitement on Saturday night (Nov. 6) as he drained the game-winning jumper with 1.7 seconds left to defeat the nationally ranked Western Mustangs by a score of 72-70 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
In what was an incredibly intense affair from start to finish, Tyndale’s game winning heroics provided a fitting finish. Following a foul on Western with four seconds left on the clock, York’s final play was perfectly executed with Tyndale catching the inbounds pass and bringing the ball across the key before launching the jumper over the outstretched arm of the defender.
There was plenty of physical play going on between both teams as Tyndale and Western point guard Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) fought each other endlessly during each possession. At the end of the night, Tyndale finished with a solid 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Barbeau tallied 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Also having a big game for the Lions (1-1) was second-year forward Dejan Kravic (London, Ont.), who dominated the paint with 24 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks. It was his second straight night with a double-double after recording 15 points and 11 rebounds against Windsor on Friday night.
Kravic frustrated the Mustangs’ Adam Jesperson (London, Ont.) all night long, holding him to eight points on 3-for-13 shooting.
To say that this was an intense game would be an understatement as both teams were eager to push the ball and the score at every moment. Kravic made his presence felt early as he scored three consecutive baskets using his patented twisting hook shot.
The score remained close throughout, however, with the No. 6 Mustangs proving their standing as a nationally ranked squad as their defence clamped down on the Lions offence for multiple stretches.
The Mustangs (1-1) found most of their baskets off of easy opportunities during fast breaks. Fifth-year veteran Andrew Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) was the recipient of a lot of these chances as he rolled to 20 points on an efficient 9-of-17 from the field.
The Mustangs held the lead at the half by a score of 40-33, but that lead would not last long.
Led by the steady hand of Tyndale, the Lions stole the momentum in the second half, piling up offensive rebounds and easy scores which led to both teams being knotted up at 48 points heading into the fourth.
The back and forth play continued into the fourth. Every time the Lions drained a shot, the Mustangs would strike back. This continued right up to the closing seconds, when Tyndale scored the final basket of the game.
Waterloo Warriors @ Queen’s Gaels
Tim Boyle of Belleville, Ont., made a single free-throw with just four seconds left to hand the Queen's Gaels a 63-62 win against the Waterloo Warriors in men's basketball on Saturday night.
Queen's Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont., recorded 20 points and five rebounds to lead the Gaels in the win.
Chris Barrett of Vancouver, B.C., had 15 points, five steals, and four assists to help the Gaels both offensively and defensively. Brandon Baronaitis of Toronto led the Gaels with seven rebounds.
Kitchener's Cam McIntyre led the Warriors in scoring dropping a game high 23 points in the loss.
The game was filled with multiple swings which saw the Gaels fall behind by 14 points heading into halftime. Waterloo used a 27 point second quarter to build the 45-31 lead. In the third, Queen's dominated the Warriors both offensively and defensively. Waterloo would only muster seven points in the third, while Queen's edged out in front by posting 22 points in the quarter.
The win brings the Gaels early regular season record to 1-1 and also marks Duncan Cowan's first CIS victory as a Head Coach.
Laurier Golden Hawks @ RMC Paladins
The Golden Hawks continued their early season tear, dominating the RMC Paladins 114-53. Laurier was able to dominate the Paladins, more than doubling their score. Five Hawks were able to score in the double digits.
After beating Queen's in dominate fashion, Laurier carried their momentum into victory against RMC.The Hawks jumped out to a 25-11 lead after the first quarter, then a 54-28 lead at half. Laurier never looked back after the break, scoring 35 points in the third quarter alone. The Hawks ended the game with a 61 point lead. Laurier dominated the Paladins in every major statistical category, dominating on defence, they out rebounded RMC 47 to 18 and racked up 11 steals as well.
