OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 8 LANCERS EDGE GRYPHONS
The Windsor Lancers (16-5) were led by Isaac Kuon who netted 24 points. Enrico Dilorento had 12 points before fouling out, while Andre Smyth added 11. The Lancers as a team shot an impressive 15-17 from the free-throw line.
Along with Mott's 24, the Gryphons were led by Jonathan Moscatelli (Toronto) and Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.), who each scored 19 points. Michael Petrella (Brantford, Ont.) added 16 points to go with his game high eight assists. The Gryphon's had one of their best three-point shooting games, connecting on 13 three-pointers.
The game started with the Gryphons jumping out to the lead thanks in large part to Mott and Moscatelli, who scored seven each in the opening frame. The Gryphons outworked the Lancers as they were noticeably fired up due to ‘Senior Night' and it was clear that Mott would have a great game from the start.
The Gryphons extended their lead in the second as the team continued to shoot well to take a 44-36 advantage at halftime. Mott led the way with 17 points at halftime, while Kuon kept the Lancers close, netting 10.
The third quarter was the Gryphons worst of the night, as they allowed the Lancers to take back the momentum as they outscored the Gryphons 24-18 to cut into the Gryphon led. McCarthy scored 11 in the quarter to keep the Gryphons up 62-60 entering the fourth.
Jonathan Moscatelli carried the team on his back in the fourth, scoring 10 in the quarter. With the teams trading baskets, the Lancers were able to take a brief lead midway through the quarter before a 7-0 run put the Gryphons ahead by six with five minutes left in the game.
Windsor continued their impressive free-throw shooting to close the gap, and took the lead with five seconds left in the game, setting up Mott's heartbreaking finish.
The Gryphons (5-16) hope to close out the year with a win at Brock this Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
