OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 2 RAVENS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT MBNA CAPITAL HOOPS CLASSIC
The No. 2 nationally-ranked Carleton Ravens (14-1) men's basketball team defeated the No. 5 Ottawa Gee-Gees 74-66 in the Fourth Annual MBNA Capital Hoops Classic basketball game in front of 8,074 fans at Scotiabank Place Wednesday night.
The Gee-Gees (12-3) would win the tip off, but it would be the Ravens who would control the rest of the game not giving the hosting team any leads.
It was obvious that both teams came prepared to battle. The Gee-Gees were well-prepared for the CIS second-ranked Ravens staying close behind them in the first. The only chance the hosting team had was from beyond the arc, getting most of their points that way. Veteran forward Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) was a big powerhouse inside the post for the Ravens, scoring most of their points in the first quarter of play. At the end of the first, the Ravens led by a small two point margin, 18-16.
Carleton stepped up their defence in the second quarter, not letting the Gee-Gees have anything easy. On the offensive end, Carleton kept capitalizing on inside-out play and executing their game plan well. Without forward Dax Dessureault, the Gee-Gees didn't have as strong of a presence in the post, struggling to put buckets in the hoop from the paint and forcing most of the Gee-Gees' points from beyond the three-point line.
Closing off the second quarter the Ravens rendered the Gee-Gees scoreless for seven and a half minutes while continuing their offensive attack. The Ravens would go on a 15-0 run before Josh Gibson-Bascombe, a fifth-year guard from Toronto put an end to the run with two foul shots.
The Ravens were not afraid to dive for every loose ball in the first half putting on an aggressive effort and rebounding the ball very well to give them second-chance opportunities, something that has been a big part of the Ravens' identity. Some miscommunication at the end of the quarter however cost the Ravens a bucket, letting the Gee-Gees score seven points in an otherwise scoreless quarter ending the half with a 38-23 Ravens lead.
In the third quarter, Ottawa was making its way back into the game due to costly Raven turnovers. They would get it as close as three points with a long three ball from fifth-year guard Donnie Gibson (Kingston, Ont.) before the Ravens were forced to take a timeout to regroup.
The momentum had shifted in favour of the Gee-Gees but the Ravens refocused coming out of the timeout, and turned things around thanks in part to a hustle play by Ravens third year guard Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) who put back an offensive rebound and was fouled for a three-point play. On the other end, the Gee-Gees did not let down, playing shot-for-shot with the Ravens. By the end of the third, the two teams had put up 17 points each, but Carleton was on top with a 15 point cushion, 55-40.
The fourth quarter was much the same with the two teams battling shot-for-shot. The Ravens continued to lead the entire game however, winning the match-up 74-66. The game concluded with a RedZone victory celebration on the court to admire their CIS national champions and victors of the Fourth Annual MBNA Capital Hoops Classic.
The Ravens were led by McCleery who scored a game-high 24 points while teammate Elliott Thompson (Fredericton) added 16 points in the victory.
The Gee-Gees were led by second-year guard Warren Ward (London, Ont.) who had 15 points. Gibson-Bascombe and Gibson contributed 13 and 10 points respectively in the loss.
The Ravens will play the Toronto Varsity Blues and the Ryerson Rams at home this weekend before playing four games on the road and finishing the regular season with a home game against the Gee-Gees.

Jay Mott (Burlington, Ont.) and Jonathan Moscatelli (Toronto) both scored 18 points for the Gryphons. Mott was one rebound shy of a double-double.
WESTERN 88, WATERLOO 81
At Western, five Mustangs contributed double-digits in points in an 88-81 win over the Waterloo Warriors (8-7).
