RAVENS TOP FINAL MEN'S BASKETBALL RANKINGS
OTTAWA - The defending CIS champion Carleton Ravens are back at No. 1 in the final men's basketball Top 10 of the 2009-2010 season, while the track and field rankings remain unchanged going into this week's CIS championship.
Men's Basketball
After spending four weeks at No. 2 behind the UBC Thunderbirds, the reigning W.P. McGee trophy champion Ravens received all 40 first-place votes in the final coaches' poll of the campaign.
Carleton (20-2 season / 2-0 playoffs) defeated cross-town rival Ottawa 78-64 last Saturday to capture yet another OUA East crown. The victory sets up an OUA final matchup this Saturday between the Ravens and Windsor (17-5 / 2-0), which dominated Lakehead 87-66 in the Ontario West title match.
Ottawa (18-4 / 1-1) and Lakehead (17-5 / 1-1) face off on Saturday for the third OUA berth into the CIS championship, to be held in the nation's capital at Scotiabank Place from March 19 to 21.
Meanwhile at the Canada West Final Four, UBC (17-1 / 3-1) was upset by Saskatchewan in the semifinal round, 104-87 in overtime, before rebounding the next day with a 78-68 bronze-medal win over Simon Fraser. Saskatchewan (14-6 / 4-0) went on to score a second straight upset on Saturday night when they downed Calgary 96-83 in the conference final.
In the AUS, the Cape Breton Capers (18-2) were crowned regular season champions after they closed out conference play with a 92-82 win over UPEI, while StFX (18-2) was upset 87-79 by Saint Mary's in its finale.
Following these results, UBC drops one spot to No. 2 in the final national rankings, Cape Breton leapfrogs StFX to move into third place, Windsor moves up two positions to No. 5, Ottawa is down one to No. 6, while Saskatchewan is the biggest winner of the week moving up from No. 10 to No. 7.
Calgary (15-5 / 3-1) is down a pair to No. 8, Lakehead drops one to No. 9, and previously unranked Saint Mary's (14-6) grabs the last Top 10 spot.
Carleton, Windsor, Saskatchewan and Calgary have booked their tickets to the CIS championship, while UBC is still in the running for the wildcard entry.
The AUS berth will be awarded on Sunday. Cape Breton, StFX, Saint Mary's, Dalhousie, Acadia and UPEI compete at the conference Final Six in Sydney, N.S., starting Friday.
The QSSF berth will be decided Thursday night when UQAM hosts Laval in the sudden-death Quebec final.
Track & Field
The Windsor women and Guelph men top the rankings heading into this week's CIS championships at the University of Windsor. The national meet runs from Thursday to Saturday.
All four conference championships were held two weeks ago with Saskatchewan (women) and Regina (men) splitting the team titles in Canada West, while Windsor, Dalhousie and Sherbrooke swept the OUA, AUS and QSSF banners, respectively.
