KUON TOPS OUA WEST MEN�S BASKETBALL
HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the West men’s basketball major award winners and all-stars this morning at the Inaugural Wilson Cup Awards Breakfast presented by Tourism Hamilton.
Isaac Kuon (Mississauga, Ont.) of the Windsor Lancers was named OUA West Player of the Year. Kuon finished the regular season at the top of league standings in scoring, recording an average of 21.68 points per game. To accompany his 412 points over 19 games, he added 34 assists, 72 rebounds, and 32 steals. The Lancer forward made 77 of 91 free throws, and shot 45.7 per cent from beyond the arc. Kuon was on the first team all-star list.
West Rookie of the Year went to Laurier’s Patrick Donnelly (Oakville, Ont.). His 270 points was good for third overall in team scoring. The first-year Arts major recorded 168 rebounds, 45 assists, and 16 steals, while shooting 40 per cent inside the paint. Donnelly led the all rookie team.
Lakehead’s Greg Carter (Ottawa) is this season’s Defensive Player of the Year. Over 22 games for the Thunderwovles, Carter recorded 55 defensive rebounds, 38 steals and nine blocks. Offensively he added 141 points and 75 assists.
Andre Smyth (Windsor, Ont.) of the Windsor Lancers is the West recipient of the Ken Shield Award, given to the student-athlete who best exhibits outstanding achievements in basketball, academics, and community involvement. Smyth finished the 2010-11 regular season with 161 points, 95 rebounds, and 35 assists. Off the court, he has been named to Windsor’s President’s List three years, recording over a 12.0 grade point average, based on a 13 point scale, while completing his Biological Science Degree in Pre-Medicine and has been offered Medical School entrance at Michigan State University. While currently enrolled in a Master’s of Business program and playing for the Lancers, Smyth has been a tireless volunteer and an incredible contributor to the Windsor-Essex community. He has worked as an emergency room volunteer at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital where he helped get patients food and blankets, made hospital beds and delivered blood samples to the pathology lab. He also volunteers his time as a University of Windsor Coaches Clinic demonstrator and a University of Detroit Mercy Coaches Clinic demonstrator, where he performed basketball drills for various coaches.
For the second-consecutive year, Lakehead’s Scott Morrison was named OUA West Coach of the Year. The Thunderwolves matched last year’s 17-5 record to remain at the top of the West standings to gain a first-round bye in the playoffs and home court advantage in the West semifinals.
Joining Kuon on the first team all-star list are Laurier’s Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.), Jamie Searle (Belleville, Ont.) of the Lakehead Thunderwolves, Western’s Andrew Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.), and
Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) of the Guelph Gryphons.
The second team all-star honours were given to Cam Michaud (Grimsby, Ont.) of the McMaster Marauders, Windsor’s Lien Phillip (St. Marks, Grenada), Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.) of the Golden Hawks, Waterloo’s Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.), and Lakehead’s Venzal Russell (Detroit, MI).
Laurier’s Jamar Forde (Mississauga, Ont.) joined Hawks teammate Donnelly on the all rookie team. Other members were McMaster centre Taylor Black (Stoney Creek, Ont.), Brock guard Cedric Kasongo (Welland, Ont.) and Western forward Peter Scholtes (London, Ont.).
Award winners and all-stars from the Lakehead Thunderwolves and Laurier Golden Hawks will take part in the OUA Wilson Cup Final Four men’s basketball championship. The Thunderwolves take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the first semifinal set for 6 p.m. tonight live on The Score Television Network while the Golden Hawks will face the Carleton Ravens at 8 p.m. with the game tape delayed till 10 p.m. on The Score. Winners of both semifinal games will advance to the championship game on Saturday, March 5 broadcast live on The Score at 8 p.m. All three games will be webcast live online at www.thescore.com.
