M-Basketball Friday Roundup
Ottawa, 88 @ York, 83 Box Score
Warren Ward earned a double-double on 26 points and 10 rebounds and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees held off a late comeback to defeat the York University Lions by a score of 88-83 in men's basketball on Friday (Feb. 4) at Tait McKenzie Centre.
Lions' forward Stefan Haynes (North York, Ont.) led all scorers with 28 points. Kenneth Buchanan (Toronto) was second in team scoring with 13 points.
The Lions (8-10) controlled the floor in the first quarter and led by as many as eight points in the frame. After the Gee-Gees (9-9) went on a late scoring run, Lions' rookie guard Jordon Campbell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) put up four points in the dying minutes of the quarter to send his squad into the break with a 23-18 lead.
Things were much different in the second. After increasing their lead to nine to open the quarter, the Lions went cold from the field and the Gee-Gees capitalized. Led by Jacob Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto), the Gee-Gees went on a 10-0 run and took over the lead at 32-31.
David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) ended the Gee-Gees' run with two free throws, but the Gee-Gees continued to press, and both teams traded leads for the remainder of the frame. The lead changed hands seven times in a fast-paced, back-and-forth quarter.
Led by four points from Louis Gauthier (Ottawa), the Gee-Gees went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and took a 44-40 lead into halftime.
The Gee-Gees continued to roll in the third. Despite an impressive offensive sequence in the opening minutes of the quarter that saw Haynes score four points and cut the Gee-Gees' lead to just one, the Gee-Gees maintained their composure and put together a lengthy run to go ahead 65-56. Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa) scored five points on the run and Ward (London, Ont.) scored four.
Haynes scored six points to end the quarter, cutting the Gee-Gees lead to 67-63 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, Haynes showed he has some range to his game. He scored eight points, including two three-pointers, in the opening minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 72-72.
Justin Bell (Mississauga, Ont.) and Campbell followed up Haynes's run with seven combined points of their own, putting the Lions up 79-78 near the midway point of the quarter.
The Gee-Gees, however, retook the lead shortly after and held off the surging Lions in the dying minutes for the win. Led by Ward, the Gee-Gees went on a 10-4 run to end the quarter and won the game comfortably by five points.
With the loss, the Lions drop from third to fifth in the OUA East. Prior to tonight's game, the Lions were tied with the Gee-Gees and Ryerson Rams for third with 16 points, but they now trail the Gee-Gees by two.
The Lions split the season series with the Gee-Gees 1-1. The two teams do not meet again this season.
