RAVENS LOOK TO DEFEND WILSON CUP AGAINST LANCERS
The Wilson Cup is presented by Investors Group.
The Ravens, who won three consecutive Wilson Cups the early part of last decade, have won five OUA championships since 2003. The Lancers won their last Wilson Cup in 2007, and with a win on Saturday will move into second place on the all-time list. The Western Mustangs lead all schools with 24 titles. The Lancers are currently tied with the Toronto Varsity Blues with 14.
The Ravens have gone 22-2 against OUA teams in both the regular season and playoffs, including a 95-62 win over the Lancers back on Nov. 13 at Carleton. The Ravens shot 55.2 percent as a team, with five players reaching double-figures in points. First-year point guard Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) scored a game-high 18 points shooting 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the field. Fourth-year guard Michael Kenny (Ottawa) contributed 15 points.
Fifth-year forward Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) is the biggest threat offensively for the Ravens, leading the team with 370 points during the regular season, an average of 16.8 points per game. Carleton has three players averaging double-figures in scoring, including third-year guard Elliot Thompson (Fredericton) at 12.5 and Hinz at 11.6.
Defensively, the Ravens feature OUA East defensive player of the year Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.). The third-year guard led the Ravens with 31 steals and 12 blocks, while collecting 109 rebounds, 77 of which came from the defensive end of the floor. The Ravens were the top defensive team in OUA, allowing an average of 63.1 points per game. They held the Lancers to 31.7 percent shooting (19-of-60) in their Nov. 13 meeting.
The Lancers have gone 19-5 against OUA teams during the regular and post-season, having won nine consecutive games. They too have three players that averaged better than 10 points per game during the regular season. Fourth-year forward Isaac Kuon (Mississauga, Ont.) led all Windsor players with 398 points, an average of 18.1 points per game. Fifth-year forward Nigel Johnson-Tyghter (Brampton, Ont.) and fourth-year guard Andre Smyth (Windsor, Ont.) averaged 12.9 and 10.1 points per game, respectively. During their win streak the Lancers have averaged 85.3 points, scoring 87 in both home playoff victories over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and Lakehead Thunderwolves.
Carleton has not lost an OUA game at the Ravens' Nest since Jan. 27, 2007, including a pair of recent playoff victories over the York Lions and Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Lancers defeated the Ravens in their last visit to the Wilson Cup, an 84-75 victory in March, 2007.
Tip-off of the Wilson Cup begins at 8 p.m. The game can be seen via the web on SSNCanada.ca and will be televised locally on Rogers TV Ottawa, Cable 22.
No matter the outcome on Saturday, both Carleton and Windsor have qualified for the Final 8 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men's basketball championship taking place March 19-21 at Scotiabank Place in Kanata, Ont. With Carleton earning an invite as host, an OUA third-place game between the No. 9 Lakehead Thunderwolves and No. 6 Ottawa Gee-Gees will determine OUA's second invite alongside Windsor.
The Gee-Gees played the Thunderwolves earlier in the season, with Ottawa winning 93-56 at Lakehead on Nov. 28. Second-year Gee-Gees guard Warren Ward (Brampton, Ont.) led all players with 27 points. Fourth-year guard Jamie Searle (Belleville, Ont.) scored 20 points for the Thunderwolves.
The bronze medal game will be hosted by Ottawa on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. The game can be seen via the web on SSNCanada.ca.
