NO. 1 CARLETON DOMINATES OUA BASKETBALL MAJOR AWARDS
HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the East men’s basketball major award winners and all-stars this morning at the Inaugural Wilson Cup Awards Breakfast presented by Tourism Hamilton.
The No. 1 Carleton Ravens dominated, winning four of the five major awards handed out.
Tyson Hinz (Ottawa) was named OUA East Player of the Year. Hinz ranked third in East scoring this season, averaging 17.05 points per game. The second-year forward ranks first in field goals, shooting 57.2 per cent. In his 580 minutes played in 22 games, Hinz finished with 375 points, 131 rebounds, 58 assists, and 17 steals. Hinz was also named a first team all-star.
Rookie of the Year went to Carleton’s Phil Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.). The first-year guard was an immediate presence for the Ravens playing in all 22 games this season averaging 13.14 points per game. Scrubb ranks second amongst all rookies in three-point percentage, shooting 40.5 per cent from the perimeter. He was also part of the second team all-stars, and on the all rookie team.
Fellow Raven Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) was this season’s Defensive Player of the Year. This was the third straight year the award was won by a Raven, and second-consecutive honour for Hobin. The fourth-year guard recorded 58 defensive rebounds, 26 steals and 17 blocks for his undefeated team that prides themselves on their defensive toughness. On offence he added 163 points and 56 assists. Hobin was a first team all-star.
Nemanja Baletic (Ottawa) of the Ottawa Gee-Gees was the East recipient of the Ken Shield Award, given to the student-athlete who best exhibits outstanding achievements in basketball, academics, and community involvement. Over 21 games this season, Baletic scored 107 points, and added 54 rebounds, and seven assists. Off the court, he is completing his Master’s in Human Kinetics with an expected 8.0 grade point average, on a 10 point scale, at graduation in the spring. The fifth-year forward volunteers with numerous organizations including the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa where he oversees the basketball program, and helps with the homework club; the University of Ottawa Health Promotion Centre where he consults with clients about utilizing health and performance psychology mental skills in order to help improve health and quality of life; and Roger’s House at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario where he acts as a respite care assistant.
After leading his team to a perfect 22-0 regular season record, Carleton’s Dave Smart was named OUA East Coach of the Year. The 2009-10 OUA Champions improved on last season’s 20-2 record, and hope to repeat their 3-0 playoff run for their fourth consecutive Wilson Cup. Over the last eight years, Smart has led his team to four undefeated seasons. This was Smart’s sixth coach of the year nod.
The rest of the first team all-star list was made up of Ottawa’s Warren Ward (London, Ont.), Toronto’s Andrew Wasik (Burnaby, B.C.), and Ryerson’s Jahmal Jones (Mississauga, Ont.).
Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo, BiH) of the Toronto Varsity Blues, York’s Dejan Kravic (London, Ont.), Dan Bannister (Newmarket, Ont.) of Queen’s, and Carleton’s Elliot Thompson (Fredericton) were all named second team all-stars.
Joining Scrubb and Jones on the East all rookie team are Ottawa’s Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa), Ryerson’s Jordon Gautier (Windsor, Ont.) and Nikola Misljencevic (Ottawa) from Queen’s.
Award winners and all-stars from the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens will take part in the OUA Wilson Cup Final Four men’s basketball championship. The Gee-Gees take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the first semifinal tonight set for 6 p.m. live on The Score television Network while the Ravens will face the Laurier Golden Hawks at 8 p.m. with the game tape delayed till 10 p.m. on The Score. Winners of both semifinal will advance to the championship game on Saturday, March 5 broadcast live on The Score at 8 p.m. All three games will be webcast live online at www.thescore.com.
