OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 9 LANCERS EDGE GOLDEN HAWKS BY ONE IN OVERTIME THRILLER
At the break, the Golden Hawks (8-12) held a 42-30 lead.
Both teams exploded offensively in the third, with each squad picking up 26 points each. Laurier's Max Allin (Chatham, Ont.) had a streak of five straight buckets in the frame to keep the Hawks on top.
The fourth quarter was all Lancers as they scored 26 points to the Hawks 14 to tie up the game and send it to overtime.
In the OT frame, Windsor scored the go-ahead basket with 20 seconds left on the clock, but Laurier was unable sink the basket.
For the Lancers, Kuon scored 30 while Nigel Tyghter-Johnson (Brampton, Ont.) had 23 points. Josh Collins (Toronto) chipped in 10 and Tyghter-Johnson and Andre Smyth (Windsor, Ont.) had six boards each.
WATERLOO 82, WESTERN 64
At Waterloo, the host Warriors (9-11) beat the Western Mustangs, 82-64.
Orangeville, Ont. native Jesse Tipping lead the Warriors with 20 points, while teammate David Burnett (Heidelberg, Ont.) chipped in 12 assists.
Western's Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) and Garrett Olexiuk (Burlington, Ont.) combined for 29 points in the Waterloo loss. Western dropped to 11-9.
OTTAWA 94, RMC 40
At RMC, the No. 6 Ottawa Gee-Gees (18-3) easily defeated the RMC Paladins, 94-40, thanks to the a balanced offensive performance.
Double-digit scorers for the Gees included Max Clarkson (Peterborough, Ont.) with 11, Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto) with 13, and Ryan Malcolm Campbell (Mississauga, Ont.) with 18.
RMC veteran Simon Dakin (Comox, B.C.) shone for his squad, notching 20 points and five rebounds. The Paladins dropped to 0-21.
MCMASTER 86, GUELPH 64
At McMaster, the No. 10 McMaster Marauders (13-7) clinched third place in the OUA West Division with an 86-64 victory over the Guelph Gryphons (5-15).
McMaster third year guard, Tyrell Vernon (Hamilton, Ont.) contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Cam Michaud (Grimsby, Ont.) added 14 points and four rebounds.
University of Guelph guard Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) knocked down three of seven shots from behind the arc to lead the Gryphons with 19 points. Adrian Achonwa (Guelph, Ont.) added 13 points including seven of eight from the free throw line.
CARLETON 108, QUEEN'S 65
At Queen's, the No. 3 Carleton Ravens (19-2) put together another outstanding outing as they defeated the Queen's Gaels 108-65.
After a first half that saw head coach Dave Smart receive a technical foul for questioning an out of bounds call, the Ravens headed to the locker room with a 48-40 lead.
The Ravens came out strong in the second half, pulling away from the Gaels early. By the end of the third quarter Carleton led 81-56 and sailed through the final quarter to victory.
The Ravens were led by veteran forward Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) with a game-high 27 points. Elliot Thompson (Fredricton) also contributed 22 in the victory.
The Gaels (10-11) were led by senior guard Ryan Hairsine (St. Marys, Ont.) who had 14 points for the home team. Teammate and first year forward James Asefa (Toronto) contributed 12 points.
TORONTO 82, LAURENTIAN 72
At Toronto, veteran guard Rob Paris lead the Varsity Blues (10-10) to an 82-72 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs (6-14).
Paris, of St. Catharines, Ont., went 5-of-5, including 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, to tally 15 points as the Varsity Blues built a commanding 36-6 lead after the first quarter.
Paris was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for his 28-point performance. Toronto's Andrew Wasik (Burnaby, B.C.) had another big night with 14 points and 10 boards, while Drazen Glisic of Sarajevo ended the night just shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Laurentian was anchored by rookie guard Manny Pasquale (Victoria) who finished with 24 points, five steals, and six rebounds.
RYERSON 69, YORK 66
At Ryerson, forward Boris Bakovic lifted the Rams (10-10) to a 69-66 victory over the York Lions (4-16).
Bakovic (Toronto) surpassed 2,000 career points following a game-high 33-point performance. The two-time all-star is just the second player in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) history to reach the 2,000 mark.
With Ryerson leading 62-58 with less than five minutes to go, York's David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) hit back-to-back three pointers to give his team a 64-62 lead. Bakovic responded from behind the arc to restore the Rams lead. Trailing 67-66, the Lions had the ball with 25 seconds left but Tyndale's jump shot went off the rim and the Rams eventually gathered the loose ball.
Joey Imbrogno (Toronto) finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for Ryerson, while Richardo Dunkley (Kitchener, Ont.) added 10 points.
Tyndale recorded a team-high 26 points for York, hitting 10-of-20 from the field including 4-of-9 from three-point range. Dejan Krevic (London, Ont.) added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Ostap Choliy (Oakville, Ont.) had eight points and 10 boards.
LAKEHEAD 72, BROCK 53
At Brock, the No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves (16-4) routed the Brock Badgers (8-12) for a second consecutive game, winning by 19 points.
Sophomore post Yoosrie Salhia (Toronto) was a force for LU, posting 20 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Jamie Searle (Belleville, Ont.) provided the perimeter offence with 16 points including four 3-pointers with nine rebounds and three steals. Brendan King (Petawawa, Ont.) shot 5-7 from the field en route to 14 points.
Mike Cruikshank (Toronto) lead the Badgers with 13 points but Brock standouts Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) and Didi Mukendi (St. Catherines, Ont.) were limited to a combined 4-20 from the field with 11 and five points, respectively.
