CIS Blackberry Top Ten
OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Victoria Vikes and University of Manitoba Bisons are the new queens of CIS basketball and volleyball, respectively.
In other CIS sports, Carleton (men’s basketball), Alberta (men’s volleyball and men’s hockey) and McGill (women’s hockey) all remain at No. 1 in their respective polls this week, while Calgary leads the first women’s and men’s swimming rankings of the season.
In women’s hoops, Victoria moves up one spot in the new Top 10 to take over from the Windsor Lancers in first place. Windsor drops to No. 2.
The Vikes improved to a CIS-best 8-0 in conference play over the weekend with a two-game sweep of Fraser Valley - 70-59 and 58-52 - while the Lancers (3-1) were upset 66-61 at home by Toronto (4-1) on Friday. Toronto improves two positions to No. 7 following its big win.
In women’s volleyball, all top five teams change places this week with Manitoba (4-1) moving up two spots to No. 1, Trinity Western (6-0) and Montreal (7-1) also gaining two positions to No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, and Laval (6-2) and Brandon (3-1) both dropping three spots to fourth and fifth.
The 2010 CIS finalist Bisons swept Thompson Rivers in four and three sets over the weekend, while former No. 1 Laval suffered back-to-back losses to McGill and Montreal.
In men’s basketball, top-ranked Carleton improved to 4-0 in OUA action with a pair of wins in Kitchener-Waterloo, 88-80 over Laurier and 94-78 against Waterloo.
In men’s volleyball, No. 1 Alberta (4-0) was tested by No. 3 Brandon (2-2) but managed to sweep a two-game set at home in Edmonton, in five and four sets.
In women’s hockey, No. 1 McGill (6-0) survived a scare and edged cross-town rival Montreal 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. Despite outshooting their rivals 44-11 on the night, including 6-0 in overtime, the Martlets needed Olympic gold medallist goalie Charline Labonté to stop all four Montreal skaters in the sudden-death session to prevail.
