Lakehead Thunderwolves @ Carleton Ravens
In their last home game of 2010, the No. 1 Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team took their eighth straight victory with a 75-49 win over the Lakehead University Thunderwolves Saturday night.
As the Thunderwolves were the first of only two teams to hand the Ravens a loss last season, taking a narrow 76-73 victory, the Ravens were looking for redemption.
Lakehead took the lead at the start of the first, but it wouldn’t be long before Carleton overtook the opposition.
Into the second, the Ravens shut down the Lakehead offence, as the visiting team would only sink their first two halfway through the quarter. Carleton went up by as much as 17 points and ended the half leading 35-21.
The Ravens continued to stretch their lead into the second half, finding success at the three-point line and creating a 25-point deficit. With the Thunderwolves unable to find a rhythm, Carleton ran away with a 75-49 win at the final whistle.
McMaster Marauders @ Ottawa Gee-Gees
A win before the Christmas break was just what a rookie Gee-Gees squad needed after five straight losses, many by five or fewer points. Tonight’s 72-61 win came at the expense of the McMaster Marauders in front of a large, loud and rowdy home crowd.
Head Coach James Derouin often says of fifth-year forward Louis Gauthier(Ottawa, Ont.), “He’s our guy and when he’s [playing well], we’re a really good team.” And did Gauthier ever play well tonight – amassing 21 points and eight rebounds. After an average first half, Gauthier came out in the second half to go six for six from the floor. “He continues to get more confidence and put up better numbers,” said Derouin.
The Gee-Gees were down early, trailing 13-8 after the first quarter. Foul trouble early in the second quarter proved costly to the Gee-Gees, with McMaster getting eight opportunities at the free throw line to the Gee-Gees zero. Despite this, the Garnet and Grey held a slim 27-25 lead at half.
The third quarter saw the referee’s whistles blowing seemingly constantly, as both teams wracked up the fouls; the Marauders added 11 personal fouls and the Gee-Gees six. But the Gee-Gees continued to expand their lead into the final minutes of the frame, leading by seven heading into the final ten minutes. The final quarter only sealed the deal for the Gee-Gees, with uOttawa expanding their lead to 11 to guarantee the win.
The rookies once again stole much of the show for the Gee-Gees, with first-year guard Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa, Ont.) and first-year forward Matt Marshall (Burlington, Ont.) contributing greatly to the win tonight.

Ryerson Rams @ Laurier Golden Hawks

Matthew Buckley (Waterloo, Ont) had a big game for the Hawks who ended up winning 89-76; scoring a game-high 23 points and pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, but soon found out that the Rams wouldn’t be the easy to put away. Ryerson trailed for the entirety of the first half, including a 14 point deficit in near the end of the second quarter. The visitors just kept responding to the Hawk's leads, and felt good entering half only trailing by four points. After the break, the Hawks kept up their strong play, but Ryerson just didn’t go away, leaving the Hawks with just a six point lead going into the final quarter. The final frame saw Ryerson jump out to take their only lead of the game. The lead lasted for all of one minute, before the Hawks pulled ahead for good, thanks to some clutch free throws from Nathan Thompson (Brampton, Ont.), Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.), and Patrick Donnelly (Oakville, Ont.).
