OUA M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: NO. 7 LANCERS OPEN 2010 WITH VICTORY
With the victory, the No. 7 nationally-ranked Lancers move to 7-2 in conference play this season.
On Wednesday night, the visiting Mustangs got off to a fast start as they used some solid outside shooting to take a 20-14 lead after one quarter of play.
The Mustangs continued to execute well on offence in the second as they built a 10-point lead in the quarter.
However the Lancers battled back with some tough defence and a couple big steals to cut into the Western lead. Isaac Kuon knocked down a three-pointer and a couple of late baskets from Nigel Johnson-Tygther reduced the Western lead to 35-32 at the break.
After the break, Windsor began to find their rhythm on offence as they used solid transition play and some strong post play to take a 51-49 lead after three.
The fourth quarter was a hard fought battle as the Mustangs recorded a couple of key baskets late to take a 69-67 lead with only 1:30 remaining.
From there, rookie point guard Josh Collins took over as he knocked down a tough three pointer from deep in the corner followed by a floater in the lane to give the Lancers a 72-69 lead with a minute to play.
Western tried to foul to regain possession, but the Lancers made their foul shots down the stretch to hold on for the 77-72 victory.
For Windsor, Collins had a strong game as he finished with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with six assists and five rebounds.
Isaac Kuon led all scorers with 23 points while Johnson-Tygther finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Lancers will be back in action this Saturday night as they host the Brock Badgers at the St. Denis Centre. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
BROCK 76, WATERLOO 63
At Brock, host Badgers defeated the Waterloo Warriors by the score of 76-63 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Wednesday night. Prior to the game Brock head coach Ken Murray was honoured as he became just the third coach in CIS history to coach in 1,000 career games.
Brock led by four points at the half 36-32. With 6:38 remaining in regulation, Brock led by just two 58-56 before going on a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to go up 68-58 with 4:38 left. Waterloo would bring it to within five points 68-63 but it was the Badgers pulling away in the final two minutes ending the game with a 9-0 run to secure the victory. Brock's defence was stellar in the final frame allowing 13 Waterloo points including just five in the final five minutes of the contest.
Brock had three players in double figures led by freshman standout Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) who recorded 20 points and five rebounds. Senior Mike Cruickshank (Toronto) registered 16 points including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and sophomore Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) contributed with 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman Anto Raic (Welland, Ont.) played a key role off the bench finishing with nine points and career-high 10 rebounds in 19 minutes of action. Raic was also 3-of-4 from three-point land.
For Waterloo Cam McIntyre recorded a game-high 28 points. Former Badger Jesse Tipping was held to zero points going 0-for-6 from the field.
LAURIER 72, GUELPH 47
At Guelph, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the Gryphons 72-47 in their ninth game of the season.
"I feel like we really came together as a team," said Evan Schwantz (Guelph, Ont.) after the game. "We were on all the loose balls, we stopped [our opponents] from getting a lot of shots off, and we came out with the win."
"I think that was one of the best defensive games we've played all year," added Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.). "We rebounded really well and we kept them off the boards."
The first quarter of the game saw Laurier taking an early lead with Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.) hitting a jump shot on the Hawks first possession, soon followed by a lay-up from Allin.
After a brief back and forth between Laurier and Guelph, in which the Hawks continued to hold a slight lead over the Gryphons, the purple and gold scored two jumpers in a row followed by a lay-up courtesy of Conor Meschino (Oakville, Ont.) and Jesse MacDonald (Brantford, Ont.).
The quarter ended with the purple and gold up by five and the score at 14-9.
Come the second quarter, Laurier briefly increased their lead to eight points, but by the half, the home team had managed to whittle that back down to five.
In the first half, the Gryphons benefited from a number of shooting fouls committed on behalf of the Hawks. Despite this, entering the second half, the score was 24-19 for Laurier.
With the third quarter came a further increase in aggression. Both teams fouled a great deal, including the home team's two technical fouls.
It wasn't until the forth quarter that Laurier really took control. They dominated the play both offensively and defensively resulting in the final score of 72-47 for the Golden Hawks.
The high-scorers for Laurier were MacDonald and Harrison who both scored 13 points. For Guelph, the high-scorer was Jonathon Moscatelli (Oakwood, Ont.) who hit 13 as well.
On Saturday at 3 p.m. the Hawks take on the Western Mustangs in London.
