Brock Badgers @ Ryerson Rams
In a wild game full of momentum swings and incredible offense, the Ryerson Rams escaped with a 108-105 overtime victory against the Brock Badgers on Saturday night.
The Rams (2-4), who were up by as much as 18 points midway through the third quarter before Brock (3-3) made a roaring comeback, have snapped a four game slide after a victory in their home opener on November 5. Jordon Gauthier scored a season-best 29 points, and also picked up 13 rebounds for a double-double. Jahmal Jones and veteran Ryan McNeilly added 20 and 18 points respectively for Ryerson.
The Rams were slow out of the gate for the second straight night, going down 19-7 midway through the first quarter. However, they quickly recovered and went on a 13-3 run as Jelane Pryce picked up five points in the opening period.
Still down 27-20 in the second, Ryerson got hot and scored 22 straight points over the Badgers. Brock lost their touch from beyond the arc, only scoring 12 points in the quarter and turning over the ball on consecutive plays. The Rams took advantage, as Gauthier streaked for 11 points with four straight buckets during the Ryerson run. The first-year guard ended the first half with 17 points, as the dazed Badgers headed to the locker-room down 46-32.
Brock would find its shot again mid-way through the third quarter, but still struggled to stop the Ryerson offence that continued to sink baskets at the other end of the floor.
However, back-to-back three's by Cedric Kasongo and Anto Raic finally began to cut significantly into the Rams lead, as the Badgers were only down ten heading into the final quarter.
Andrew Kraus opened the quarter with another three to get the lead down to single digits, but the Badgers went on to miss their next three attempts from beyond the arc. Pryce and McNeilly both answered with three-pointers of their own to restore the seemingly large Ryerson advantage.
The Badgers would not go away, as Mike Cruikshank took over the game late in regulation. With Ryerson ahead by 10, the Toronto native nailed two three-pointers, and added a lay-up to bring Brock within four. Cruikshank ended up with 29 points on the night.
The contest continued to tighten up, with the Rams still ahead by two when Ola Adegboruwa was fouled and stepped up to the line with just seconds on the clock. After making his first free throw, Adegboruwa missed the second, and the Badgers took over the ball with less than five seconds to go. They ran the floor quickly, and found Jermel Pierre in the deep right corner. The ball left his fingertips just before the buzzer, and found the basket to send the game into overtime with the score tied at 96-96.
An early three by Raic gave the Badgers a 101-98 advantage in the overtime period, but "Hero Burger Hero of the Game" Gauthier found the basket, and came up with a big block on the defensive side. After a mad scramble at centre court with three Ryerson players swarming the Brock ball-carrier, Jelane Pryce stole the ball and shovelled it to Jones, who notched two of his 20 points with a lay-up to put Ryerson back in front.
After a Brock turnover on the ensuing possession, Pryce made a huge shot from downtown, giving the Rams a 105-101 lead. The teams traded buckets, and Brock held possession in the final moments down by three once again. This time Cruikshank put the ball up, but it missed the net at the final horn, and the Rams would escape with a victory.
The Badgers took an incredible 44 three-point attempts, sinking 18 of them while shooting 47.5% from the floor. Ryerson shot 51.4%, and turned the ball over six less times than their Brock counterparts. The Rams also outrebounded the Badgers 37-28 one night after getting beaten badly on the glass by Guelph.
Guelph Gryphons @ Toronto Varsity Blues
Alex Hill recorded a season-high 27 points as the No. 10 Varsity Blues men’s basketball team handily defeated the Guelph Gryphons 86-70 on Saturday, November 20 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-1 and sit in second place behind the No. 1 Carleton Ravens in the OUA East division. The Gryphons drop to 3-3 and are in a four-way tie for fourth in the West.
After building a solid 42-29 lead at halftime, Hill exploded for 18 second-half points, as the Blues maintained at least a nine-point lead throughout the majority of the game. The Toronto native was 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and 4-for-6 from the free throw line on the night.
Drazen Glisic of Sarajevo, BIH tallied 15 points and six assists, while Burnaby, B.C., native Andrew Wasik had another big night with 12 points and a game-high 13 boards. Arun Kumar of Hamilton, Ont., also chipped in with 11 points and six assists in the win.
Guelph brought the game within nine to start the second half, but Kumar would widen the gap for good with back-to-back three pointers to end the third quarter. Toronto had a 59-46 lead heading into the final frame.
Hill and Glisic went on a shooting frenzy from there, combining for 17 of Toronto’s 27 fourth-quarter points. Guelph’s Daniel McCarthy attempted to rally the troops with 11 of his own, but it wasn’t enough as the Blues walked away with the 86-70 victory.
The Gryphons were led by Michael Petrella’s 17-point performance, while Michel Clark and Jonathan Moscatelli each had 16 points. Daniel McCarthy recorded 14 points and Jerald Greenidge tallied a team-high 10 boards in the loss.
Carleton Ravens @ Western Mustangs
The Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team extended its winning streak to five games Friday night, defeating the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 99-66 on the road.
Philip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) continued his impressive performance in his first year as a Raven, scoring a game-high 26 points to lead his team to victory.
Western held a narrow advantage at the end of the first, but a dominating performance in the second quarter that saw the Ravens outscore their opponent 28-9, gave Carleton a sizeable lead at the half and they never looked back.
The Ravens were strong on the boards, out-rebounding the Mustangs and not giving them an opportunity to get back into the game in the second half, as they came away with the convincing victory.
Two other Ravens hit double digits: Elliot Thompson (Fredericton) recorded 18 points and Kyle Smendziuk (Kanata, Ont.) added 15.
Ottawa Gee-Gees @ Windsor Lancers
The Windsor Lancers Men's Basketball team defeated the Ottawa Gee Gees 84-81 on Friday night at the St. Denis Centre.
With the victory, the #8 ranked Lancers move to 5-0 in OUA regular season play and sit in first place in the OUA West standings.
On Friday, both teams got off to slow starts offensively as the Gee Gees used a late run in the opening quarter to go ahead 17-13.
The Lancers quickly responded in the second quarter as guard Enrico Diloreto used some aggressive play to bring his team back to a tie game, 23-23. The home team outscored Ottawa by ten in the second quarter as they took a 37-31 halftime lead.
The second half continued to be a battle as neither team could break free of the other. The lead changed hands a number of times with Windsor holding a slight 55-54 lead after three.
The fourth quarter was a shoot-out with both teams finding their range from three-point land. The lead went back and forth throughout the quarter before Andre Smyth took over late.
Smyth knocked down four 3-pointers late in the game to give the Lancers the lead for good. The Windsor native had 12 of his 18 points late as he helped his team secure the 84-81 victory.
In the win, Monty Hardware had 17 points and 7 rebounds while Lien Phillip finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Enrico Diloreto added 14 points and Isaac Kuon had 9 points.
Waterloo Warriors @ York Lions
David Tyndale led all scorers with 24 points, and the York University Lions men’s basketball team squeaked out a 78-76 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday (Nov. 19) at Tait McKenzie Centre in a game that went down to the wire.
Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) was an offensive powerhouse for the Lions, going 11-for-20 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. He was the architect of the Lions offence; whenever he touched the ball, points were soon to follow.
Second-year guard Ostap Choliy (Oakville, Ont.) and forward Dejan Kravic (London, Ont.) chipped in with 14-point performances of their own. Kravic was also a presence in the paint, pulling down nine rebounds on the night.
The first two quarters of the game were back-and-forth affairs, with both teams trading baskets throughout. Each quarter boiled down to a battle between guards, with Tyndale and Warriors guard Wayne Bridge (North York, Ont.) providing most of the offense for their respective teams. Tyndale drained seven baskets and Bridge drained six through two quarters, setting up a 42-42 deadlock heading into the half.
The third quarter was more of the same, but the Lions would get the better of the Warriors by a single point. The Warriors tallied most of their points off the fast break, which they used to great effect all quarter. The Lions, however, were able to counter the fast break with impressive shooting from Tyndale and Kravic and took a 65-64 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, both teams went ice cold from the field. With two points up for grabs, players on both squads began to overthink their shots, resulting in a relatively low-scoring quarter. In the dying minutes of regulation, however, Tyndale and Stefan Haynes stepped up for the Lions and drained a pair of clutch shots, giving their squad a 77-74 lead. Both teams would continue to trade missed shots until the final seconds when Tyndale drained a clutch free throw to put the Lions ahead for good, 78-76.
Laurier Golden Hawks @ Laurentian Voyageurs
The Laurentian Voyageurs were just able to hold off the Golden Hawks, riding their lights out shooting percentage to a tight 88-87 victory. Laurentian had a great overall team scoring effort, with five Voyageurs scoring in double digits.
The Hawks looked to be pulling away in the first quarter but Laurentian was able to move within one point of Laurier before the frameended. The Voyageurs rode this momentum into the second quarter outscoring Laurier 21-13. This allowed Laurentian to go into half with a 42-35 lead. The second half saw the Voyageurs barely holding onto a slim lead; Laurier kept it close until the final seconds where they missed a last-second field goal that would have put them ahead.
The Voyageurs shot a sharp 49% from the field, while the Hawks shot 29%. Laurier out-rebounded Laurentian 43-34. Laurentian also held the edge in free-throw shooting; shooting 72% from the charity stripe, while Laurier shot 62%.
Laurier was led by Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.) who scored 23 points. Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.) had 22 points, while Matthew Buckley (Waterloo, Ont.) added 17 points. First year Patrick Donnelly (Oakville, Ont.) had his second double-double of the year, scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Isiah Pasquale (Victoria, B.C.) led all scorers with 32 points, while Manny Pasquale (Victoria, B.C.) added 14. Shavaan Sheldon (Capetwon, SA.) had 13 points, and Tychon Carter-Newman (Brampton, Ont.) added 10 points. Mike Hull (Victoria, B.C.) had 12 points to go along with his 10 rebounds.
Queen’s Gaels @ McMaster Marauders
Rookie Taylor Black (Stoney Creek, Ont.) drained his final points of the game at the buzzer on Friday night in the Burridge Gym to propel the McMaster Marauders to a two point win (69-67) over the visiting Queen's Gaels.
The Marauders improve to 2-3 in conference play with their second straight victory while Queen's drops to 1-4 for sixth place in the OUA East.
Gael Timothy Boyle (Belleville, Ont.) sunk three with 11.5 seconds left to tie the score at 67 apeice. Sophomore Victor Raso (Hamilton) grabbed the ball behind the net with 0.8 seconds remaining and fed it to Black who kissed it off the glass.
“Victor made a perfect read and Taylor obviously had a perfect finish,” McMaster coach Amos Connolly said to the Hamilton Spectator. “Our team needed this. We’ve squandered some leads. It’s nice to catch a break.”
Cam Michaud (Grimsby, Ont.) led the Marauder attack with 17 points and five steals. Black snatched up six boards in the win while finishing with 12 points. Kenan Etale (Dundas, Ont.) also recorded 12 points while sinking six of eight free throws.
Veteran guard Dan Bannister (Newmarket, Ont.) led Queen's with 28 points. Bannister currently has the third highest scoring average in the OUA with 21.40 PPG.
