PIONEER PETROLEUMS OUA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named Pioneer Petroleums Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending March 13, 2011.
Each Pioneer Petroleums OUA Athlete of the Week will receive a $25 gift card and a dri-fit T-shirt, courtesy of Pioneer Petroleums.
MALE: Tyson Hinz, Carleton Ravens, Basketball
Hinz, an Ottawa native, was honoured with the Jack Donohue Trophy as tournament MVP of the CIS Final 8 after being named CIS player of the year three days prior. The second-year forward and his Carleton Ravens were named CIS champs for the seventh time in nine years, defeating Trinity Western 82-59 in the gold medal game. Hinz was also named game MVP in Carleton’s 73-66 quarter-final win over the No. 7 Concordia Stingers on Friday, where he banked 19 points, five rebounds and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Playing 34 minutes in the 95-83 semifinal victory over the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies the following day, Hinz racked up an impressive 32 points and finished with nine rebounds for another player of the game honour. He went on to record 13 points, six rebounds and four assists in the national final, finishing the weekend as a tournament all-star.
FEMALE: Noelle Montcalm, Windsor Lancers, Track & Field
Montcalm, a Windsor, Ont. Native, had an outstanding weekend at the CIS Track & Field Championships as she was the top points getter on the female side of the competition, accumulating 30 individual points (26 in solo events, four in relay). She captured five medals overall with a gold medal in the women's 60m Hurdles, and silvers in the 60m, 300m, 4x200m relay and 4x400m relay. The fifth-year Nursing student's performance led the Lancers to their third consecutive CIS Championship title.
