Queen’s Gaels @ Guelph Gryphons
The Guelph Gryphon men’s basketball team earned an impressive 78-71 win over the Queens Gaels on Friday night in Guelph. The Gryphons move to 1-2 on the season.
The one-two combination of Jonathan Moscatelli and Dan McCarthy will surely be on every opponent’s radar this upcoming basketball season. Friday night’s game was just a small sample of what can be expected from the two veteran players.
Moscatelli (Toronto) lead the Gryphons with 20 points, going an impressive 10-10 from the free-throw line, while McCarthy (Guelph) netted 19 to go along with a game high nine rebounds. Jerald Greenidge (Brampton) added 16 in an impressive effort in his first home game as a Gryphon.
Queen’s was led by Dan Bannister (Newmarket) who scored a game high 26 points. Alex Weatherill (Hamilton) added 10 off the bench.
The Gryphon’s home opener didn’t quite begin how they had envisioned, as the Gaels were able to build a 36-31 halftime lead. Moscatelli did his part to keep the Gryphon’s close with eight opening quarter points, while McCarthy added seven by halftime.
The third quarter belonged to the Gryphons, as they outscored the Gaels 27-18 to take a four point lead into the fourth. The Gryphons shot 57% in the quarter, compared to only 34% in the first half.
With both teams fighting for the win, the Gryphons turned to McCarthy, who scored seven in the final quarter to help seal the Gryphons victory. Greenidge added a number of key rebounds in the final quarter to keep the Gaels at bay.
Laurentian Voyageurs @ Lakehead Thunderwolves
The Laurentian Voyageurs touched down late at the Thunder Bay airport, and never really got back on schedule, as they watched the Thunderwolves race past them 87-50 Saturday evening at the Thunderdome. Laurentian's flight from Toronto was delayed due to heavy fog in Toronto, resulting in them not arriving in Thunder Bay until 4 1/2 hours before game time, which had to be pushed back by an hour. The Thunderwolves smelled blood early, and never relented, punishing the Voyageurs quarter by quarter, 26-16, 21-8 and 21-6 for the first three respective frames. The final quarter was a moot point, as both teams had emptied their benches in search of game experience for the 2nd string ballers.
Lakehead saw much of their line up log double digit minutes, but were led by veteran post Yoosrie Salhia, who pulled down 13 boards to go with 11 points and a steal. Lakehead's outside gunners were also on point, with Cam Hornby, Venzal Russell hitting three 3-pointers, and Joseph Jones hitting 4. Lakehead also repeated its strong guard play, with Jamie Searle logging 4 assists to contribute to the team's 22, contrasted by only 10 turnovers as a team.
Laurentian, who had gotten the better of McMaster the night previous, looked road weary and unable to deal with Lakehead's ball pressure and up-tempo pace. Mike Hull tallied 11 points, Isiah Pasquale 9, and Georges Serresse 10. 6'9" freshman Shavaan Sheldon grabbed 8 boards.
York Lions @ McMaster Marauders
One night after blowing a 25-point lead and losing to the Laurentian Voyageurs, the McMaster men's basketball team built and lead and held it long enough to defeat the York Lions on Saturday night at the Burridge Gym for their first win of the 2010-11 conference season.
Scott Laws (Gormley, Ont.) scored 22 points, Taylor Black (Stoney Creek, Ont.) added a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds and McMaster built a 20-point lead and held on for a 79-62 victory.
Yorks' shooting night was dreadful at best, with the Lions unable to generate any easy offence and not catching any breaks. Late in the third quarter, York guard Ostap Choliy (Oakville, Ont.) stole the ball near midcourt and appeared to have an easy layup, but tried to jam the ball down and got stuck on the front of the rim.
McMaster inserted rookie post Black into the starting lineup, and the rookie responded with one of the best games of his young career. Black added five steals, and was a menace on the offensive glass, grabbing eight offensive rebounds.
"I think Taylor Black's best thing today was not getting any bad fouls. He understood when to go and when not to" said Mac coach Amos Connolly after the game.
Blacks ability to disrupt Yorks' offence played a key role in keeping the Lions from getting back into the game. The visitors would make 25 turnovers in the game and shot just 38 per cent for the game. Dejan Kravic (London, Ont.) led York with 14 points.
McMaster also shot below 40 per cent, but got up 83 shots to the Lions' 61. The Marauders also had just nine turnovers.
Ottawa Gee-Gees @ Laurier Golden Hawks
Not even twenty-four hours after he dropped a career-high 39 points, Kale Harrison (Stratford, Ont.) was at it again, scoring 30 points in the 91-71 winning effort over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Wilfrid Laurier was coming off a heart-breaking loss to the number one ranked Carleton Ravens on Friday, and rebounded in beautiful fashion.Laurier was able to take advantage of the absence of injured Ottawa guard Warren Ward (London, Ont.) with the victory over the nation's tenth ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Laurier only trailed for a grand total of 11 seconds, falling behind briefly in the first quarter. The Hawks were able to charge back, scoring 32 points to Ottawa's 16. The second quarter was more evenly matched, sending the Hawks to the locker room with a 20 point lead. Ottawa tried to mount a comeback in the second half, but Laurier was equal to the task, limiting Ottawa to only 35 points. Laurier was able to overcome Ottaw's sharp shooting from three point range by going to the free throw line 25 times – and making 22 of them.
Kale Harrison once again led the Hawks, scoring 30 points, and also pulling down six rebounds. Rookie Patrick Donnelly (Oakville, Ont.) also had a strong performance, scoring a career high 21 points and adding six rebounds. Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.) contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.
Ottawa was led by rookie Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa, Ont.) who had 23 points. Jacob Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto, Ont.) had 11 points, and Nemanja Baletic (Ottawa, Ont.) had 10.
Carleton Ravens @ Waterloo Warriors
Five Ravens hit double digits Saturday night to give Carleton a 94-78 victory over the University of Waterloo Warriors on the road.
The game marks the fourth straight win for the Ravens this season.
Carleton took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back. A strong performance in the second helped them extended their lead and they went into the halftime break up 49-37.
The Warriors played the Ravens much closer in the second half. But a 27-point performance by Warrior Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) wasn’t enough to lift his team to victory, as Carleton came away with the 94-78 win.
Tyson Hinz (Ottawa), Philip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.), Aaron Chapman (Bloomfield, Ont.), Willy Manigat (Montreal) and Cole Hobin (Ashton, Ont.) all reached double digits for the Ravens.
Carleton out-rebounded Waterloo 37-25.
Ryerson Rams @ Windsor Lancers
e Lancer Men's Basketball team earned a hard fought 87-82 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Saturday night at the St. Denis Centre.
With the victory, the Lancers remain unbeaten in OUA regular season play with a 4-0 record.
Lien Phillip had 15 points and 12 rebounds while Enrico Diloreto added 18 points in the victory.
The Lancers jumped out to a 26-16 lead after the first quarter thanks to some strong interior play from Lien Phillip who was dominant in the post.
The two teams traded baskets in the second quarter with Windsor holding a 45-37 lead at the break.
In the third, the Rams mounted a charge with some streaky outside shooting that allowed them to tie the game at 62-62.
However in the fourth, the Lancers proved to be too much as senior Monty Hardware was red-hot from outside and led his team to the 87-82 victory. Hardware finished with 21 points including 10 in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.
Josh Collins had 12 points and 5 assists while rookie Evan Matthews had a strong game with 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting.
Toronto Varsity Blues @ Western Mustangs
Second-year forward Alex Hill tallied 25 points to lead the Varsity Blues men’s basketball team to a 92-64 victory over the Western Mustangs on Saturday, November 13 in London, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 3-1, while the Mustangs drop to 2-2 after the first two weeks of the 2010-11 OUA basketball season.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the first half, with Toronto holding a slight 43-36 lead after two quarters of play.
From there, the Blues extended their lead and didn’t look back, outscoring the home team 49-28 over the next two frames.
A native of Toronto, Hill added four assists and three steals to his game-high 25 points, while fourth-year forward Drazen Glisic of Sarajevo, BIH recorded a double-double with18 points and 10 boards. Guards Justin Holmes and Arun Kumar each had 14 points in the win.
Western was led by Brett Lawrence, who had 13 points, while Marcus Barnett and Andrew Wedemire had 12 each in the loss.
