York, 58 @ Toronto, 71 Box Score
The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team came away with a 71-58 victory over the York Lions on Friday night (Jan. 28) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the Blues improve to 11-5 and remain in second place, while York drops to 7-9 in third place in the OUA East division.
Fourth-year guard and Toronto native Justin Holmes led Toronto for the second consecutive game with 19 points, including four three pointers, six boards and two steals.
Sarajevo, BIH native Drazen Glisic had 16 points and six rebounds, while Alex Hill of Toronto chipped in with 13 points on the night. Veteran forward Andrew Wasik (Burnaby, B.C.) tallied eight points and eight boards in the win.
The first half went back-and-forth with neither team gaining more than a five-point advantage. In the dying seconds of the second quarter, York’s Dejan Kravic came up with a huge steal and streaked down the court for a nice two-handed dunk to even the score; however, Holmes came right back with a three-pointer to give U of T a 31-28 at halftime.
Things remained close throughout the third quarter until Hill extended Toronto’s lead, draining two from beyond the arc and adding a jumper in the last two minutes of the frame. The Blues maintained a steady lead from there to secure their fourth win in the past five games.
Kravic (London, Ont.) led all players with 21 points and 15 boards, while David Tyndale of Mississauga, Ont., had 19 points. Kenneth Buchanan added 10 rebounds in the losing cause.

Queen's, 41 @ Ottawa, 71 Box Score
The Gee-Gees made winning look easy tonight, as they stormed to a 71-41 victory over the Gaels in home court action.
“Our work ethic is now starting to pay off as we pull off these wins,” said third-year guard Warren Ward, London, Ont., “And I think that’s important. We’ve been working hard all season long and coming up short. So now it’s our time to start winning some games.”
The Gee-Gees marched onto the court tonight and showed a strong presence from the opening jump ball, taking a convincing 25-9 lead after the first quarter, before running away with a 12-point streak to open the second frame and leaving Queen’s with only five points, all sunk in the last two minutes.
Queen’s made the second half a bit more of a contest, but despite this effort, the garnet and grey continued to outscore the Gaels, adding another five to their lead in the third. The Gee-Gees saw a slow fourth frame, but the lead they had already built carried them to a victory.
Ward led the scoring charge for the Gee-Gees with 18 points. Fifth-year forward Louis Gauthier, Ottawa, Ont., wasn’t far behind as he clocked a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
“If you look at the final score alone, you would assume that I was pleased,” said head coach James Derouin, “The problem was how the game transpired; I thought we played poorly with the lead again, which was disappointing to me. I’m happy with the overall blind score, but there are still things we have to work on.”
