GRYPHONS UPSET NO. 7 GOLDEN HAWKS IN OUA MEN'S HOCKEY
Guelph's Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored both the visitor's first goal and their eventual game winner midway through the second period.
Laurier's Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) opened the scoring just 1:22 into the game for his 13th of the season. The Hawks then got into penalty trouble and the Gryphons took advantage scoring two power play markers.
Jason Bergeron (Ancaster, Ont.) tied the match up at two-all at 4:27 in the second, but Kiriakou scored five minutes later for the win.
Early in the third, the Hawks were again mired in penalty trouble with five straight calls against them. They finished 7-for-9 on the penalty kill, while the Gryphons shutout Laurier's league leading power play going 4-for-4.
The final goal of the match would be an empty netter scored by Kris Belan (Fiorence, Ont.) to seal the victory for Guelph.
In net, Laurier's Ryan Daniels (Pickering, Ont.) turned aside 47 of 50 shots while his counterpart Scott VanBommel (Norwich, Ont.) stopped 19 of 21.
Next up for the Hawks will be the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
