Muylaert adds a familiar face to the UOIT Ridgebacks coaching staff
OSHAWA, Ont. – UOIT head coach Marlin Muylaert is proud to announce that Jason Jackman has been named an assistant coach of the Ridgebacks men’s hockey program.
"We are excited to have Jason join our coaching staff," said Muylaert. "I have worked with him as a player and as a coach, and his passion towards the game and his drive for success is second to none."
Jackman, a native of Bowmanville, is very familiar with the University game having played with the University of Guelph from 1998 to 2002, where he racked up 108 points in 89 games. In Jackman’s freshman season, Muylaert was the head coach of the Gryphons.
The two were also members of the World University Games in Slovakia during the 1998-99 season. The Canadian team won bronze, and Jackman was rated as one of the best top forwards on the team, according to Muylaert.
Jackman joined the Gryphons after a four-year junior career with Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He was no stranger to success during his time with the Storm as his teams made three trips to the OHL finals, won one championship, and attended two Memorial Cups. In total, Jackman averaged almost a point per game in the OHL scoring 204 points in 239 games.
After playing University hockey, Jackman played two years professionally with the Bakersfield Condors, who played one season in the West Coast Hockey League and another in the East Coast Hockey League.
In 2005, he returned to the Durham Region where he once again paired up with Muylaert, but this time behind the bench as a member of the Port Perry Mojacks coaching staff. In 2006, the Mojacks went on to win their first league title in 14 years and advanced to the Clarence Schmalz Cup finals.
UOIT is coming off their best season in program history qualifying for the OUA playoffs for the second straight season after finishing in seventh place in the OUA western conference. The Ridgebacks return to the ice with training camp beginning in September 2011.
