The success of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) student-athletes does not stop after graduation. They succeed not only on the playing field but also in the classroom as they prepare for life after university. Investors Group Consultant Dan McDonald is one of many examples of OUA’s tradition of excellence.
Former Gee-Gees head coach Dave Leger recruited the talented centre in 2004 during McDonald’s final year in Major Junior hockey with the Brampton Battalion.
When it came time to choose a University to further academics and athletics, the University of Ottawa was an easy choice for McDonald.
“I loved the city, and it was close to home,” said the New Liskeard, Ontario native.
The speedy forward began his campaign with the Garnet and Grey in the 2005, and over his four seasons made a name for himself in the nation’s capital. While completing a double major in Business and Commerce, McDonald was named assistant captain of the Gee-Gees, and was Ottawa’s top scorer in his last two seasons with the team. He ended his Gee-Gees career on a high in 2009 with 41 points (14-27-41) in 25 regular season games.
After the 2008-09 season finished, McDonald signed an amateur try-out contract with the East Coast Hockey League Utah Grizzlies, playing left wing with the New York Islanders affiliate.
McDonald took a job with Investors Group after graduating from the University of Ottawa, and credits his success in the working world to the time he skated with the Gee-Gees.
“Being an OUA athlete taught me discipline and time management,” said McDonald. The competitiveness of hockey translates very well to the competitive financial industry.”
It gave him the competitive edge needed to succeed at a young age. In his first year with Investors Group McDonald hit Pillar, an achievement level set by the company based on new business in a Consultant’s first four years as a financial advisor. Now, two years into the job, he already manages client assets of $3.6-million, and has obtained his Life Insurance license.
The financial consultant currently lives in Oshawa with his fiancé Alissa and hopes to coach hockey in the future.
