RAVENS WINS OT THRILLER OVER GEE-GEES IN MEN'S HOCKEY
The Gee-Gees were facing a must-win situation as a loss would spoil any chance of reaching the post-season. But, it was the Ravens who struck first, when Ryan Medel (Ruthven, Ont.) put a rebound past Gee-Gees goalie Riley Whitlock (Calgary), giving Carleton the 1-0 lead. uOttawa answered less than a minute later though, as Matthieu Methot (Ottawa) beat Ravens goalie Alex Archibald (Ottawa) for his 11th of the season.
The Ravens regained their lead on their first power play opportunity of the second period. Whitlock made the first save but a big rebound came to Mark Smith (Stittsville, Ont.) and he made no mistake, putting Carleton up 2-1. Yet again, their lead wouldn't last long. Just minutes later, Methot went top shelf right off a face off for his second of the game to tie it at two apiece. The Ravens would respond though when Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.) let go of a snap shot from the face-off dot that went off the post and in to give Carleton the 3-2 lead. Late in the period, the Gee-Gees were able to capitalize on their only power play of the frame thanks to Corey Thibaudeau (Ottawa) who tied the game after 40 minutes of play.
Both teams were pushing hard for the go-ahead goal in the third and with five minutes to play it was the Ravens that would get it, as Jared Cipparone (Tecumseh, Ont.) notched a power play marker for the 4-3 lead. But, as was the story throughout the game, the Gee-Gees responded quickly. Just one minute later, Brandon McBride (Whitby, Ont.) netted a power play marker of his own to tie the game and force overtime.
As the overtime period was winding down, Andrew Self (Peterborough, Ont.) came in on a two-on-two with Yves Bastien (Dowling, Ont.). Self put the puck out front and Bastien backhanded it past Whitlock to give Carleton an important two points in the battle for home ice advantage in the post-season. With the win, the Ravens record improves to 15-9-3, putting them one point ahead of the fourth place University of Toronto Varsity Blues in the OUA East and four points ahead of the fifth place Queen's University Gaels. Both the Varsity Blues and Gaels, however, have a game in hand.
The Ravens face a tough test in their last regular season game. They will travel to Trois-Rivières on February 13 to play the No. 1 team in the OUA, the UQTR Patriotes. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
