BlackBerry CIS Athletes of the Week: Brock's Abercrombie
Marcelle, a third-year student from Victoria, averaged a remarkable 5.57 kills per set as she led the Thunderbirds to a pair of convincing road wins over the Manitoba Bisons (4-3), who were ranked first in the nation going into the weekend. Following a straight-set victory on Friday night, the 6-foot outside hitter and member of Team Canada’s beach program was almost flawless in a 3-1 triumph on Saturday as she finished with 24 kills and only one error on 41 attacks. UBC (6-2) moved up five spots to No. 1 in this week’s CIS Top 10 following the impressive sweep.
UNB swimmer Danielle Losier, Montreal volleyball player Marie-Sophie Nadeau and Toronto hockey player Nicole Kesteris were also nominated for the women’s award.
Abercrombie, a first-year student from Sarnia, Ont., racked up six points in two games and also scored in a shootout last weekend to help the Badgers (5-4-4) upset a pair of Top-10 rivals. The 6-foot-1, 184-pound forward tallied a career-high two goals and three assists on Friday in an 8-2 demolition of then-No. 10 Concordia (9-5-0). On Saturday, the high-scoring freshman added one helper and was one of two Brock skaters to score in shootout overtime as the Badgers handed No. 3 McGill (13-0-1) its first loss of the regular season, by a 3-2 score.
UPEI hockey player Matt Carter, Montreal volleyball player Andy Oshima and Trinity Western basketball player Jacob Doerksen were the other male nominees.
