GRYPHONS END GOLDEN HAWKS SEASON IN OUA MEN'S HOCKEY
The game started with some strong scoring chances for the purple-and-gold as they controlled the puck for the first couple of minutes only to be stopped several times by Gryphon netminder Scott VanBommel (Norwich, Ont.).
Paul Bradley (Calgary) opened scoring in the contest at the 1:23 mark of the first. Bradley picked up his third point of the post-season as he beat VanBommel with a top corner shot.
Guelph would go on to score three straight goals in the period including one on the power play as Edward Gale (Keswick, Ont.) tipped a puck into the net.
"They gained a lot of momentum from the power play goal and the goal a bit later," commented Laurier team captain Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) on the change of momentum in the game. "It basically took the wind out of our sails."
Laurier's Phil Magistrale (Tsawwassen, B.C.) brought the game to within one as he tipped in a puck from Jordan Bonneville (St. Agatha, Ont.) early in the second. Guelph opened it up to a two goal lead once again late in the period but defenseman Mike Gauthier (North Vancouver, B.C.) closed the gap once again as he beat VanBommel when a centering pass ended up on his stick.
With just over a minute to go Laurier's goalie Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.) headed for the bench for the man advantage but the team couldn't maintain control of the puck and Gale would score his second of the game as he picked up an empty netter to end the contest.
MacDougald completed his Golden Hawk career with Sunday's game as he stopped 28 of the 32 shots on net while his counterpart VanBommel stopped 34.
"It's been a good four and half years at Laurier," commented MacDougald on his overall university experience. "Obviously we're a little frustrated that this season is a little shorter then we wanted it to be, but looking back this has been the best years' of my life."
Both MacDougald and Bradley have completed their fifth year of eligibility with this season with the Golden Hawk program.
"There have been a lot of ups and downs this season," commented Rizk on the year. "With a result like tonight, it's hard to say it went well but we have a lot of new faces that joined the program who will do well."
Laurier ended the 2009-10 season with a 17-7-4 regular season record which was good enough for fourth in the OUA west.
