McGill Redmen @ Nipissing Lakers
They came, they saw, they conquered. Eight different players scored and 10 players registered assists as McGill cruised to a narly 9-4 win over the Nipissing Lakers in men's university hockey before 1,000 at Memorial Gardens, Saturday.
It was the seventh consecutive victory for the defending OUA champion Redmen under new head coach Kelly Nobes, including a 2-0 start in regular season play.
McGill outshot the Lakers 52-18, including a 24-5 margin in the final period, when they exploded for four markers. The Redmen led 2-1 after the opening period and 5-3 after two. The second period was temporarily cut short when the first of two power outages occurred at 19:45. The game was delayed for seven minutes in the third period when the lights went out a second time.
Newly appointed team captain Evan Vossen, an industrial relations senior from Swift Current, Sask., scored a pair of goals to lead the onslaught and rookie defenceman Ryan McKeirnan of White Plaines, N.Y., netted the game-winner for the second consecutive night.
Other marksmen included Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., Torontonian Andrew Wright, Marc-Andre Daneau (shorthanded) of Daveluyville, Que., Jean-Francois Boisvert of Mirabel, Que., Simon Marcotte-Legare of Longueuil, Que., and Patrick Belzile of St. Eloi, Que.
Alexandre Picard-Hooper and Maxime Langelier-Parent each added three helpers.
Scoring for Nipissing was Andrew Marcoux with two, plus Brandon Happeney and Dan Watt.
Rookie goaltender Antione Tardif, also from Daveluyville, was credited with 14 saves en route to picking up his first regular season win as a member of the Redmen. Matt Hache of Guelph, Que., his counterpart with the Lakers, made 43 saves in a losing cause.
Windsor Lancers @ York Lions
The York University Lions men’s hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers by a score of 3-2 on Saturday (Oct. 9) in a rematch of yesterday’s home opener, which saw the Lions triumph 5-2 over the same Lancers squad.
Lions captain Chris Jones (Grafton, Ont.) and second-year forward Mackenzie Micks (Orillia, Ont.) led a third period Lions rally that saw them erase a one goal Lancers lead and fire off three unanswered goals on their way to victory.
The Lions generated a wealth of scoring opportunities in a fast-paced first period, out-shooting the Lancers 15-8. The Lions’ best scoring chance came late in the period off a sharp passing play involving Jeff Matheson (Toronto) and Chad Hohmann (Salmon Arm, B.C.), but Lancers goalkeeper Frank Dayus (Tecumseh, Ont.) made a reflex save with his right pad to stop Hohmann’s one-timer, which kept the game scoreless.
The Lions generated most of their chances on the power play, which looked sharp all game, but they were unable to solve Dayus.
In the second period, the Lions continued to dominate in the shot department, but it was the Lancers who had the better scoring chances.
In the opening minutes of the second, Ryan Caicco (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) threatened to put the Lancers on the scoresheet when he fired a bullet shot off David Blair’s (Ajax, Ont.) right post that ricocheted to safety, much to the delight of the York fans in attendance.
Later in the period, Scott Todd (Kingston, Ont.) snuck past the Lions defence and made a nice dangle with the puck in front of Blair, but Blair didn’t bite on the move and shut the door. Blair outdid himself later in the final minutes of the period with an acrobatic post-to-post sliding save with his left pad to keep the game scoreless.
Both teams had a multitude of two-on-one rushes in the second, but neither team could find a goal. Blair and Dayus were spectacular in the period, turning away all shots against and leaving players on both teams frustrated.
The Lions thought they had taken the lead midway through the second, but the referee ruled that a Lions’ player kicked the puck into the net, so the goal was disallowed.
The period was capped by a bit of rough play from both teams. Jesse Messier (Keswick, Ont.) and Brett Oliphant (Woodslee, Ont.) got into an altercation after a whistle and were each sent off with ten-minute misconducts.
In the third period, the floodgates opened and tempers flared in what proved to be a thrilling finish to the game.
The Lancers opened the scoring parade with a goal from Mike Lombardi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) early in the period that snuck past Blair’s outstretched glove and gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead.
After the Lancers’ goal, the Lions kicked it into high gear and found an equalizer only a few minutes later when Jones found the puck amidst a mad scramble in front of the Lancers goal, which he shoveled home to tie the game.
The Lions then took the lead on the power play with a goal from Kyle Lamb (Holland Landing, Ont.), a blast from the point that beat Dayus low blocker-side.
Micks put the Lions ahead by two with a goal late in the period on a quick wrist-shot that beat Dayus low.
After the Lions third goal, things got a little heated as the Lancers felt the game slipping away. The Lancers took a late penalty that was followed by a heated scrum behind Blair in which fists flew and harsh words were exchanged; however, no fights resulted from the scrum, and play was back underway within minutes.
Shortly after the fisticuffs, Lombardi scored his second goal of the game on a breakaway to cut the Lions lead to just 3-2, but it was too little, too late. The Lions controlled the puck for the remainder of the period and prevented the Lancers from getting any solid shots on goal.
Dayus fared well against a trigger happy Lions squad, stopping 38 of 41 shots in the game. Blair was tested less often, but was the better man between the pipes, stopping 22 of 24 shots.
With the win, the Lions move to 2-1 on the season, while the Lancers fall to 0-2.
Guelph Gryphons @ Brock Badgers
The Guelph Gryphons put in their hard hats and went to work last night grinding out a 3-2 win over the host Brock Badgers.
The Gryphons evened their regular season record at 1-1-0 and relied on their power play to push them to victory.
Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill) scored the only goal of the first period on the powerplay with assists from Kris Belan (Florence) and Ed Gale (Keswick). Guelph outshot Brock 11-8 in the period.
Brock evened the score in the second period on a powerplay of their own by Kaine Geldart.
In the third Guelph scored again on the powerplay with a marker from Belan and assisted by Kiriakou. Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay) scored what turned out to be the winning goal on a quick wrist shot after winning a loose puck battle in the Brock zone to put Guelph up 3-1. But Kris Schmidt of Brock scored with a few minutes to go to make it close. Guelph outshot Brock 26-23 on the evening and went 2/6 on the powerplay while Brock went 1/7.
Cody St. Jacques went the distance for the Gryphons in getting the win while Kurt Jory of Brock took the loss.
Carleton Ravens @ Ryerson Rams
Second-year forward Andrew Buck scored twice, while goaltender Paul Gibson stopped 38 of 39 shots as the Ryerson Rams men's hockey team defeated the Carleton Ravens 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Less than 24 hours after suffering their first loss of the season, 7-4 to Concordia on Friday, the Rams put forth a much better effort against the Ravens.
Greg Payne gave the home side a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes before Marcus Booth and Buck, with his two markers, made it 4-0 heading into the final frame. Matt Schmermund added another in the third period for the Rams.
Gibson had his shutout broken when Chris Downey got Carleton on the board with a power play marker with less than two minutes to play.
Carleton's Ryan Dube stopped 19 of 24 shots in the loss. Ryerson was 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Ravens were 1-for-8 with man advantage.
Waterloo Warriors @ Lakehead Thunderwolves
The Lakehead Thunderwolves dominated the Waterloo Warriors 7-3, Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The first period saw Lakehead come out a little tentative as Waterloo controlled the play early and took the lead 4:15 into the opening frame on a goal from forward Jarrett Schnurr. After the early Waterloo goal, the Thunderwolves settled down and after some nice stops by Warrior goalie Keaton Hartigan, Lakehead evened things up at 6:53 of the first on a goal by Andrew Wilkins (Pickering, ON) who found himself all alone in front of the net. The assist went to Brennan Menard (Thunder Bay, ON). Wilkins’ tally injected some new life into the Wolves and then Mike Quesnele (Sault St. Marie, ON) scored his third goal of the season at 8:20 of the first period to put the home team in front 2-1. Assists went to Adam Sergerie (Thunder Bay, ON) and Matt Caria (Sault St. Marie, ON).
The Thunderwolves came out firing on all cylinders in the second, energized by a more involved crowd, and playing a much more physical brand of hockey. It took only 49 seconds for Kris Hogg (Sicamous, BC) to increase Lakehead’s lead to 3-1 on a nice wrist shot that careened off Hartigan’s glove and in. The assist went to Andy Hyvarinen (Thunder Bay, ON). Lakehead padded its lead to 4-1 on the power play when Ryan McDonald (Prince Albert, SK) buried a rebound at 2:23 of the second, with assists going to Quesnele and Sergerie.
Jarrett Schnurr scored his second goal of the game for the visiting Warriors on the power play at 5:42 of the second period, cutting the Wolves lead to 4-2.
The third period saw Lakehead continue their physical play, making Waterloo work for every inch of ice. Mike Quesnele continued his hot start to the season, scoring his second goal of the game on a five-on-three power play at 6:22. Assists went to Kalvin Sagert (Abbotsford, BC) and Matt Caria. Arron Alphonso (Orangeville, ON) scored his first goal of season at 9:10 of the third period on a laser wrist shot, putting the Thunderwolves up 6-2. The assist went to Trevor Gamache (Thunder Bay, ON).
Brock McPherson (Brampton, ON) put the game well out of reach at 16:27 of the third period on a rocket one-timer, assisted by Mitch Maunu (Thunder Bay, ON). Chris Ray got one for Waterloo with 23 seconds left on the clock, but it was too little too late.
Leading the way for Lakehead was Mike Quesnele with two goals and one assist, and Matt Caria and Adam Sergerie with two assists each.
Queen’s Gaels @ Ottawa Gee-Gees
Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., and Payton Liske of Wellend, Ont., scored in the shootout as the Queen's Gaels downed the Ottawa Gee Gees on opening night of the 2010-11 OUA men's hockey season.
Steele De Fazio of Georgetown, Ont. made both saves in the shootout to seal the victory.
Liske netted another goal and three assists in regulation while rookie Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C. had two goals in the win.
Kyle Ireland of Rosetown, Sask., had a four point night for the Gee Gees posting two goals and two assists.
Queen's narrowly escaped with the win as they gave up a 6-4 lead heading into the final minute of the game. Ottawa's Dominic Jalbert of Gatineau, Que., scored with 25 seconds remaining and then Luc Blain of Longeuil, Que., scored the tying goal with just one second left to draw the overtime frame.
Ottawa scored twice in the opening six minutes of the game, but Liske put the Gaels on the board netting his first of the season at 9:26 on the power play. Queen's registered the next four goals before trading goals with Ottawa to take a 6-3 advantage into the third.
Ireland would score his second of the game at 10:38 of the third period to pull the Gee Gee's within two.
Other Queen's goal scorers were Ben Munroe of Kingston, Ont., Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, and rookie Alexi Pianosi of Halifax, N.S.,
De Fazio (1-0-0) made 41 saves in the victory including five in the final overtime frame plus two in the shootout. Aaron Barton of Carlisle, Ont. faced 31 shots making 24 saves.
