Nipissing Lakers @ Carleton Ravens
After dropping the first game of a home-and-home series with Nipissing last night, the Carleton University Ravens men’s hockey team was unable to pull out a win at home this evening, falling 4-3 to the Lakers.
The Lakers dominated the first period, grabbing three goals in thirteen minutes. Grant McGee (Mississauga, Ont.) picked up the first two for Nipissing, beating Ravens goalie Matthew Dopud (Pointe-Claire, Que.) on the man-advantage both times. Michael Moreau (Ottawa) also found the back of the net late in the frame to put the Lakers up 3-0.
After Nipissing took a sizeable lead, Ravens head coach Marty Johnston put Ryan Dube (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) in net. The change seemed to shake the Ravens up and with under a minute to go before the first intermission, forward Shane Bakker (Navan, Ont.) put the Ravens on the board with a shorthanded goal.
Three minutes into the second, Brogan Bailey (Lunenburg, N.S.) grabbed the Lakers fourth goal of the game. Raven Joey Manley (Ottawa) answered seconds later with a point of his own to make it a two-goal deficit at the end of the period.
Justin Caruana (Orono, Ont.) brought the Ravens within one with six minutes to go before the final buzzer. Despite outshooting the Lakers 41-20 on the night, Carleton would end up falling short with a 4-3 loss.
UQTR Patriotes @ Queen’s Gaels
Thanks to a four-goal third period, the UQTR Patriotes overcame a second period deficit to defeat the Queen's Gaels 7-4 Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
The Patriotes got goals from seven different players in the game with Jean-Sebastien Breton of Pincourt, Que., scoring the game-winner midway through the third period. Pierre-Luc Lessard of Thetford-Mines, Que., was the Patriotes leading point getter in the game as he picked up three assists.
Queen's, who scored all four of their goals in the second period, got two each from Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., and Kelly Jackson of Toronto. Robert Stellick of Mississagua, Ont., Scott Kenway of Calgary, and Brock Ouellet of Lindsay, Ont., also had two points on the night, each recording two assists.
Jean-Christophe Blanchard of Trois-Rivieres, Que., made 26 saves to pick up the win for the Patriotes while David Aime of Clandeboye, Man., made 37 saves in the loss for Queen's.
Ottawa Gee-Gees @ Toronto Varsity Blues
Despite high emotions, and a nasty first period, the uOttawa Gee-Gees used some definite skill, size, and determination to take down the Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday afternoon, by a score of 4-1. The win caps a successful weekend series against the Varsity Blues where the Gee-Gees were able to extend their win streak to three games and now sit in fourth place in the OUA East division standings.
uOttawa would be the first to strike in the game with a short-handed goal by first-year forward Matt White, Ottawa, Ont. Taking a nice cross ice pass from first-year forward Carl Hayes, Dalhaven, N.S., White would flip the puck over the pad of the Toronto goalie to put uOttawa up 1-0. Less than 2 minutes later, uOttawa’s top line would connect with first-year forward Luc Olivier Blain, Longueuil, Que., netting his eighth goal to make the score 2-0. Toronto would add their lone goal of the game before the period was out.
The first period would also set the tone for the rest of the game as Ottawa racked up 32 minutes in penalty time, part of that coming from a 10 minute misconduct given to first-year defenseman Julien Demers, Ottawa, Ont., in the first period after Demers exacted some revenge when first-year goalie Aaron Barton, Carlisle, Ont., was taken down by a Toronto player.
Despite the abundance of penalties for the Gee-Gees, Toronto was a dismal 1 for 12 on the power-play, as the Gee-Gees penalty kill looked solid throughout the game.
The second period would see Blain connect with his line-mates for a second time for uOttawa’s third goal. First-year defenseman Austin Krahenbil, Melville, Sask., would get his first goal as a Gee-Gee, blasting a shot from the point to put the score at 4-1.
uOttawa would take control of the third period, running the clock down as the Blues desperately looked to create a comeback.
Barton was solid in net all game for the Gee-Gees, stopping 26 of 27 shots.
Lakehead Thunderwolves @ UOIT Ridgebacks
The Lakehead Thunderwolves struck like lightning just eight seconds into overtime, edging the UOIT Ridgebacks 3-2 in Ontario University Athletics men’s hockey action on Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre.
Lakehead leading scorer Matt Caria fired the puck at the net from near the boards and the winning goal eluded Ridgebacks goalie Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.), who had a very strong game to that point.
It was the fourth game in a row UOIT has gone into overtime - indicative of the parity and closely contested nature of OUA hockey, something many a pro sports league would envy these days.
UOIT, at 4-5-2, and Lakehead (6-4-1), are closely bunched in the highly competitive OUA western conference, where eight of the nine teams entered weekend action within three points of each other, behind unbeaten Western.
The two teams are back at it again Saturday night in the second of a back-to-back set in Oshawa.
UOIT’s Tony Rizzi (Kingston, Ont.) tied things up at 2:34 of the third period on a set-up by Kevin George (Uxbridge, Ont.) and Kyle Wetering (Pickering, Ont.). Then Rizzi drew a hooking penalty at 9:46 as he was interfered with breaking to the net, but the resulting UOIT power play came up empty.
The Ridgebacks had wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when Ryan Oliver (Brooklin, Ont.) one-timed a set-up from Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) at 1:07 of the first period.
At 13:27 of the opening frame, Lakehead’s Ryan McDonald skated up the middle of the ice and put the puck past Dawson after a nice stickhandling move. Brock McPherson gave Lakehead a 2-1 lead at 11:00 of the second period.
The Ridgebacks had a couple of good scoring chances at the end of the second. Oliver had a near breakaway on net but a Lakehead defender knocked the puck away at the last second. Then Lakehead goalie Alex Dupuis stopped George on a breakaway at 15:02.
The Ridgebacks’ three previous games were wins over Laurier and Brock and a loss last weekend to Brock.
Lakehead outshot UOIT 37-30 on Friday.
Western Mustangs @ York Lions
Junior Aaron Snow scored two goals lifting the Western Mustangs men's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over the York Lions Thursday night for their eight straight win.
Remaining Western goals were scored by Yashar Farmanara, Scott Aarssen and Steve Reese. Farmanara and Aarssen both earned two assists and Reese earned one. Lions goals were scored by Matt Thomson and Chad Hohmann.
Solid goaltending by Josh Unice helped to hold the Lions off as Unice made 32 saves. Western's powerplay was also effective, scoring twice on seven chances.
Brock Badgers @ Waterloo Warriors
The Warriors were victorious in their Think Pink game against the visiting Brock Badgers on Friday night. Forward Josh Schappert (Winnipeg, Man.) had two goals to lead the Warriors to victory while Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener, Ont.) stood tall to preserve the Warriors seventh win of the season.
Schappert put the Warriors on the board just a minute into the game from in close. Goaltender Hartigan, making his second start in as many games had to be sharp in the period as both teams exchanged multiple chances. In the ninth minute, he made two giant saves with his pads when a behind the net pass connected with the Brock forward in front who failed to jam it in. Waterloo was up 1-0 heading into the second period.
Brock came out with jump in the second, drawing two consecutive penalties for a 5-on-3 powerplay. On the powerplay, Brock threw everything they had on net but Hartigan was equal to the task making several big stops, including a point-blank stop off a one-timer.
Brock would equalize the game at one on a strange sequence in the seventh minute. With the team pressuring in the Warriors' end, the Warriors forward was unable to clear the puck at the blueline. The Brock defenceman Steve Miller held the puck and made an off-balance slapshot on net. The shot managed to elude everyone, including a surprised Hartigan as it went past his shoulder to find the top corner.
Early in the third period, Brock would move ahead 2-1 on a three-on-two as Badger Jordan Gignac picked up a rebound to put Brock in the lead 2-1.
Playing down by one seemed to energize the Warriors as they started to dominate puck possession. Midway through the period, Waterloo took advantage of a failed clearing attempt as Tyler Moir (Calgary, Alta.) picked off a sloppy pass and slid the puck over to Schappert who made no mistake putting it past Brock netminder Kurt Jory.
Just three minutes later, the Warriors would take advantage of a Brock give away. Defenceman Steve Whitely (Petrolia, Ont.) picked off the astray pass and fired a shot on net with Jarrett Schnurr (Waterloo, Ont.) showing great poise to pick up the rebound and slide it over to line-mate Aaron Lewicki (Toronto) who buried it over the diving Jory.
The Warriors defence was able to shut it down from there as the black and gold won their second straight game. Hartigan made 21 stops while his counterpart Jory had 24 saves on the night.
Laurier Golden Hawks @ Windsor Lancers
The Windsor Lancers Men's Hockey team earned a hard fought 3-2 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night at Windsor Arena.
With the victory, the Lancers move to 5-5-1 in conference play.
On Friday night, Windsor got on the board early as Scott Todd scored his first goal of the season to give them a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Hawks would bounce back only a minute later as they scored to make it 1-1 five minutes into the game.
In the second, Ryan Caicco would register his fourth goal of the season on the power play just two minutes into the period to go ahead 2-1. Kyle Lang and Kyle Nishizaki picked up assists.
The Lancers held a 2-1 lead through most of the third period before Laurier's Ryan Bernardi scored on the power play to even things up.
However, two minutes later, second year forward Anthony Tapper scored his third of the year to give the Lancers the 3-2 lead and the victory.
Lancer goaltender Jim Watt was solid in net again as he made 32 saves in the victory.
