M-Hockey Friday Roundup
Windsor, 3 @ Western, 4
Kyle Lamb scored the game-winning goal as the Western men’s hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 4-3 on Friday Feb. 4 at Thompson Arena.
Josh McQuade, Jason Furlong and Steve Reese added the remaining goals for Western while Tom Craig, Matt McCready and Mike Lombardi scored for the Lancers.
Last weekend’s contest evidently still lingered as both teams hit the ice hard to start the first period. Western handed the Lancers a 3-1 loss in Windsor last Saturday night.
Windsor scored the first goal of the evening on the powerplay as Craig took a shot from the point that beat a screened Josh Unice.
Less than three minutes later, the Mustangs countered the Lancer’s point with a powerplay goal of their own. Nemeth threaded a pass across the blueline to Matt Paltridge who hit McQuade with a pass at the top of the slot. McQuade walked down low and wristed a shot past Frank Dayus’ left pad.
Reese started the play for Western’s second goal as he banked a pass off the boards to linemate Furlong. Furlong kicked the pass up onto his stick and stepped around the Windsor defender, firing a shot on Dayus who stopped the initial shot. Furlong grabbed his own and put the Mustangs up 2-1.
The Lancers capitalized as a high shot deflected off the glass behind the net and bounced out in front of Western’s net. McCready slipped the loose puck in behind Unice for a 2-2 tie.
Reese scored Western’s go-ahead goal late in the first period as he tipped Nemeth’s shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net. The shots finished at 23-12 in favour of the Mustangs.
Despite a high-scoring first period, the second period yielded back-and-forth play with both goalies holding their ground. With just over five minutes remaining in the second, Unice headed to the bench with an equipment malfunction. Goaltender Jared Richmond made his first appearance as a Mustang and made three key saves, but the Lancers found the back of the net with 43 seconds left on the clock as Western got caught on a bad line change. Unice returned to goal to finish the rest of the game.
The Mustangs regained the lead with less than five minutes left in the game with a perfect tic-tac-toe play. Adam Mckee battled the puck loose and made a cross-ice pass to McQuade. McQuade set Lamb up right in front of the net who he one-timed the puck past Dayus for a 4-3 lead.
Western went 1/6 on powerplay opportunities and failed to capitalize on two 5-on-3 advantages. The Mustangs outshot Windsor 52-37 and held on for the win.

Carleton, 6 @ Ottawa, 2
The Carleton University Ravens men’s hockey team picked up its fourth straight victory Friday night, defeating the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 6-2 at the uOttawa Sports Complex.
With the win, the Ravens have swept the season series between the teams, winning all three games, and improved their record to 16-7-2 for third place in the OUA East.
The Ravens outshot the Gee-Gees 11-4 in the opening frame but would find themselves down by a goal at the end of 20 minutes. Joe Pleckaitis (Toronto) gave Carleton a quick start, scoring just over a minute into the game. But the Gee-Gees wouldn’t let the Ravens gain much momentum as David Foucher (Waterville, Que.) beat Carleton netminder Ryan Dube (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) 40 seconds later to tie the game at one. A powerplay goal by Simren Sandhu (Calgary) gave uOttawa a 2-1 lead.
The Ravens opened the second with powerplay goals by Tyler Taylor (Kitchener, Ont.) and Joey Manley (Ottawa) less than five minutes apart to regain their one-goal lead.
In a heated third period between the cross-town rivals, Jordan Deagle (Lethbridge, Alta.) scored yet another early goal for the Ravens, 24 seconds in. Andrew Self (Peterborough, Ont.) added another minutes later for the 5-2 lead. Linden Bahm (Kinburn, Ont.) rounded out the scoring for Carleton midway through the third.

UOIT, 3 @ Brock, 1
The Brock University men's hockey team (11-9-6 OUA) had their three-game win streak end Friday night at home as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the UOIT Ridgebacks (11-11-4 OUA).
Brock opened the scoring 4:09 into the opening period on the power play when senior Joey Pell (Dryden, Ont.) shot the puck off the end boards that was corralled by junior Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) who beat Ridgebacks goaltender Jason Guy over the shoulder for the 1-0 lead.
UOIT tied the game 1-1 at the 4:17 mark of the second period when Nathan Spaling's shot ramped up the Brock defenseman's stick and over the left shoulder of goaltender Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.). Matt Pasztor and John McCullough were credited with assists.
The Ridgebacks would take a 2-1 lead at 15:27 of the second with the man advantage. Derrick Bagshaw and Tony Rizzi setup Josh Vatri who beat Jory on a drive from the goal line to the short side.
Brock freshman Thomas Stajan (Mississauga, Ont.) nearly tied the game with about one minute remaining in the second period but his breakaway ended in a shot off the crossbar and out of the offensive zone.
UOIT would add to their lead 7:23 into the third as Vatri picked up a loose puck in front of Jory and slid it past him for his second of the night and 13th of the campaign.
Jory recorded 25 saves in the loss while Guy turned aside 21 of 22 Brock shots for the victory.

York, 4 @ Lakehead, 2
The Lakehead Thunderwolves lost 4-2 to the York Lions Friday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, ON.
Lakehead got off to a rough start when York’s Adam Stuart beat the Wolves’ starting goalie Alex Dupuis just 29 seconds into the game to put York in from 1-0.
Lakehead had their chances in the opening period, but York goalie David Blair came up with some big saves, as he continued to do throughout the game.
The second period started off the same as the first for York as Ben Alavie fired a shot past Dupuis to put the Lions in front 2-0 at 1:36. It was a chippy period with both teams trading trips to the penalty box. Lakehead had trouble gaining any type of momentum and fell behind 3-0 when York forward Mackenzie Micks scored on Dupuis at 13:14 of the second.
Lions’ defenseman Jeff Matheson increased the York lead to 4-0 at 4:45 of the third when he beat Lakehead goaltender Kyle Moir, who replaced Dupuis after the third York goal. That was the only puck that would get by Moir, as he was solid in net for the remainder of the game, coming up with several big saves for the Wolves in the third period.
Lakehead finally solved Blair and got on the board at 9:01 of the third, when Jadran Beljo scored his first goal as a Thunderwolf on a penalty shot after being hauled down by a York defender on a breakaway. That sparked the Wolves comeback attempt, and later Mitch Maunu narrowed the gap to 4-2 on a short-handed goal assisted by Adam Sergerie at the 15:00 mark. But that was as close at the Wolves would get. Late penalties to Kalvin Sagert and Mike Quesnele didn’t help the Wolves’ cause.

Ryerson, 1 @ Queen’s, 3
Queen's goaltender Steele De Fazio of Georgetown, Ont., turned aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced Friday night as the Queen's Gaels (11-11-3) clinched a playoff berth with a 3-1 victory over the Ryerson Rams (8-17-1) at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
After a scoreless first period, Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, Man., opened the scoring for the Gaels when he found the back of the net on the powerplay for his ninth goal of the season. Later in the frame, Mirwaldt was once again in on the scoring for Queen's as his shot found its way through the legs of Ryerson goalie Louie George of Waterloo, Ont., only to be tapped in by Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C.
De Fazio, who was making his fifth start in the last six games, was especially strong during the second period when the Rams had three powerplay opportunities, turning aside all 11 shots in the frame.
The Rams would close the gap to one seven minutes into the third period when Dustin Alcock of Hamilton, was sprung in all alone and beat De Fazio over the blocker with a backhand. However, just two minutes later, Jonathon Lawrance of Steinbach, Man., won a faceoff in the neutral zone before busting in down the left wing and beating George far side to restore the Gaels two goal cushion.
With their season on the line, Ryerson threw everything they could at the Gaels, leaving a man up at the Queen's blueline for most of the second half of the third but the Gaels defence stood tall allowing the Gaels to pick up their 11th win of the year.
Not only did the Gaels clinch a playoff spot with the win but it also allowed them to leapfrog Toronto and move into a tie with Ottawa for sixth place in the OUA East division. Queen's also holds a game in hand on the Gee-Gees.
