The Rams would respond in the second though, as rookie and team scoring leader Matt Sherlund would score once on the power play and once shorthanded to cut the lead to 3-2 after two periods.
In the third period, the Patriotes put the game away with three straight goals in a four-minute span. Stewart Deal would get one back for the Rams but they would get no closer.
Felix Petit, Maxime Levesque, Alexandre Blais, Samuel Richard, Louis-Etienne Leblanc and Olivier Donovan all scored for UQTR.
Shots on goal were 27-26 in favour of UQTR. Paul Gibson started in goal for Ryerson and made eight saves on 11 shots in 20 minutes of action before being replaced by Louie George, who made 13 saves on 16 shots in 40 minutes. Ryerson was 1-for-6 with the man advantage, while UQTR was 2-for-10 on the power play.
After finishing the regular season with a 12-13-3 record, the Rams posted their winnings season in more than 20 years in 2009-10, and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2001-02. The dozen wins also marked Ryerson's second-highest win total of all time, with only the 1988-89 Rams notching more victories.
