M-Hockey Friday Roundups
Windsor, 2 @ Lakehead, 5
Both teams came out of the gate with some nice jump early on, trading chances - including Lakehead forward Andrew Wilkins putting one off the post after some sustained pressure in the Windsor zone.
Thunderwolves defenseman Mitch Maunu made an impact early on with two crushing hits in the opening five minutes. Not long after, thanks to some nice board work by Matt Caria, Victor Anilane out waited Windsor goaltender Jim Watt and fired a shot past him to put the Wolves up 1-0. Assists went to Caria and Ryan McDonald on the powerplay. Lakehead controlled the tempo for the rest of the first period.
Lakehead picked up where it left off in the second period. Matt Caria pulled off a great move to sidestep a Windsor defenseman and wired a laser wrist shot past Jim Watt to put Lakehead up 2-0 at 4:59 of the second. Brennan Menard drew the assist on the goal with some nice moves down low to keep the play alive before he found Caria, who was flying all period.
The Thunderwolves wasted no time getting on the board in the third period as Adam Sergerie was fed by Brock McPherson alone in front of the net and made no mistake on the shot, putting Lakehead in front 3-0 just 1:26 into the period. 33 seconds later Caria and McDonald broke into the Windsor zone on a 2-on-1, and McDonald fired a shot past Watt on a beautiful saucer pass from Caria to put Lakehead up 4-0. That signaled the end of the night for Watt, as Frank Dayus replaced him in the Windsor goal.
The goaltender change didn't seem to make much of a difference as Brock McPherson converted a nice pass on the power-play from Andrew Wilkins at 5:28 of the third period to put Lakehead in front 5-0.
Windsor got two late goals from Kyle Nishizaki and Mike Lombardi in the final couple minutes of the game to make it 5-2, but it was too little too late for the Lancers.
One downside to the game was when Kris Hogg, fell awkwardly into the boards late in the second period. He left the game after that and did not return.

Guelph, 1 @ UOIT, 2
The Guelph Gryphons lost a tight battle in Oshawa Friday when they were edged by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks 2-1. Special teams have continued to influence the result of Gryphon games lately as their powerplay went dry and they gave up a powerplay goal against.
The first period was back and forth with the Ridgebacks holding the edge in shots 11-10 but neither team could finish.
A brief lapse in the second period was all UOIT needed to make the difference in the game when Josh Vatri scored on the powerplay and a minute later Ridgeback leading scorer Scott Baker got the eventual winner on a hard drive to the net. That seemed to wake the Gryphons as their play picked up significantly from then on but were frustrated by near misses and shots off the goalpost.
Guelph controlled the play in the third period and were rewarded with a goal by Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill, Ont.) set up by Nathan Martine (Port Colborne, Ont.) and Tim Priamo (Guelph, Ont.). The Gryphons pulled their goalie late in the game and were foiled by Ridgeback goalie Jason Guy.
Guelph outshot UOIT 33-30 on the evening and were 0/6 on the powerplay and killed off 2-of-3 powerplays against. Scott Van Bommel (Norwich, Ont.) was solid in net for the Gryphons.

KINGSTON, Ont. – Payton Liske of Welland, Ont., had a goal and an assist in regulation and added the winner in the shootout as the Queen's men's hockey team (7-8-2) overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-9-3) Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
The win is the second in the row for the Gaels and moves them two points in front of the Varsity Blues in the OUA East standings. Queen's currently holds the seventh playoff spot in the conference while Toronto holds the eighth.
Toronto opened the scoring on the powerplay midway through the opening frame when Matt Walters of Winnipeg, fired a shot from the point past Gaels goaltender David Aime of Clandeboye, Man.
The Gaels would draw even on a powerplay of their own early in the second frame when Liske notched his second goal in two games.
However, the Varsity Blues would regain the lead shortly thereafter on another powerplay marker, this time off the stick of Dan Brewer of Cambridge, Ont. Blake Boddy of Ajax, Ont., stretched Toronto's lead to two just past the 11 minute mark of the second.
Before the period was out, Alexi Pianosi of Halifax, fired home his fifth goal of the season to get Queen's back into the game.
The Gaels would tie the game early in the third when Kelly Jackson of Toronto, beat Toronto goaltender Andrew Martin of Mississauga, Ont., short-side for his sixth goal of the year.
Both teams would get chances to take the lead but both goaltenders stood tall and with the help of a couple of posts, the game went to a shootout.
After Aime stopped the first two Toronto shooters, Liske wristed a shot past Martin from the hashmarks to give Queen's the advantage. Byron Elliott of Burlington, Ont., had one last chance for the Varsity Blues but Aime shut the door to complete the comeback.
Aime finished the game with 33 saves to even his record at 3-3-0 for the year. Martin stopped 29 shots in defeat for Toronto.
