RAVENS ADVANCE TO OUA MEN'S HOCKEY QUARTER-FINALS
The Ravens had great energy out of the gate, with each line skating hard and working to be first on the puck. They took away time and space from the Gaels and their pressure would pay off seven minutes into the game when Derek Wells (Alymer, Que.) did a good job of using his defenceman. He found an unattended Mark Smith (Stittsville, Ont.) at the point, who walked in to the top of the circle and let go of a rocket that beat Gaels goalie Steele De Fazio (Georgetown, Ont.) to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead.
Despite great Ravens pressure, Payton Liske (Kingston, Ont.), the Gaels leading scorer during the regular season, beat Ravens goalie Alex Archibald (Ottawa) down low at the tail end of a Queen's power play, to tie the game at one. The Gaels had a couple of good scoring chances towards the end of the period, but Archibald came up with big saves and the game remained tied after 20.
The Gaels had a good opportunity take the lead when the Ravens went down two men for 1:17 in the second. But, the Ravens were able to kill it off with the help of Archibald who made a beautiful glove save off a shot from an open Jonathon Lawrance (Steinbach, Man.) in the slot.
The Ravens gained some momentum from the penalty kill and their hard work drew some Gaels penalties. Carleton generated a number of good scoring chances. Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.) in particular was buzzing around the net and nearly gave the Ravens the go-ahead goal they were looking for numerous times, including one shot that rang off the crossbar with five minutes left in the period. Carleton dominated the second half of the frame but couldn't find the back of the net and the game remained tied at one after two periods of play.
The Ravens carried the momentum over into the third period. They continued to pepper De Fazio with shots from all over, but the Gaels goalie shut the door. With four minutes left to play, the Ravens took an interference penalty and the Gaels would make them pay as David Chubb (St. George's, Nfld.) beat Archibald with a low shot to give the Gaels a 2-1 lead.
With just over a minute left to play, the Ravens pulled Archibald in favour of the extra attacker and it paid off as Andrew Self (Peterborough, Ont.) fired it home with 54 seconds left, forcing overtime.
The first overtime period was action packed and filled with end-to-end chances. Queen's had a power play opportunity midway through the frame that gave them some life. They nearly ended the series on numerous occasions, but Archibald kept the puck out of the net with save after save. The Ravens weren't without scoring chances of their own but De Fazio continued his solid performance between the pipes and the game would need a second and deciding overtime period.
It wouldn't take long for a game-winning goal as Yves Bastien (Dowling, Ont.) took a shot from a bad angle just minutes into the frame. The rebound came to Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who scored another big goal for the Ravens, sending the fans at the Ice House into an uproar.
