VERREAULT-PAUL NOMINATED FOR CIS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Francis Verreault-Paul (Mashteuiatsh, Que.) of the McGill Redmen is the OUA nominee for CIS player of the year. The 2010 Harrow Sports OUA East most valuable player led all OUA players with 54 points and 25 goals during the regular season, averaging two points per game in 2009-10. Verreault-Paul led the league with six game-winning goals and was second in OUA in power play goals with 10. The second-year kinesiology and psychology student also tied four others with a league-high four hat tricks. McGill had the second-best regular season record in OUA this season at 22-6-0 before winning the 2010 Queen's Cup earlier this month.
McGill teammate Marc-Andre Dorion (Saint-Hubert, Que.) is nominated for CIS defenceman of the year. Dorion led all OUA defencemen with 36 points, and was fourth among all OUA players with 29 assists. Dorion also netted seven goals. The Redmen as a team gave up a second-best 71 goals all season. Both Verreault-Paul and Dorion are also OUA East first-team all-stars.
Waterloo Warriors second-year player Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener, Ont.) is OUA's nominee for CIS goaltender of the year. The OUA West first-team netminder was among the league leaders in goals against average (2.84), save percentage (.907), wins (18), saves (685) and goals against (70) in 25 regular season games. Hartigan helped lead the Warriors to second place in the division with a record of 20-7-1 and a CIS Top 10 ranking.
Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill, Ont.) of the Guelph Gryphons is the OUA nominee for CIS rookie of the year. Kiriakou led the Gryphons with 32 points, and was second in scoring with 14 goals. His six power play goals were also second-best on the team while his three shorthanded goals led all Gryphons. Kiriakou also collected just six minutes in penalties, staying out of the sin bin. Kiriakou is also a member of the OUA West all-rookie team.
Fourth-year RMC Paladins captain Jeffrey Oke (Grand Bend, Ont.) is the OUA nominee for the Randy Gregg Award, given to the player who best exhibits outstanding achievement in hockey, academics and community involvement. The civil engineering student received the Jack C. Sargant memorial scholarship awarded annually to the RMC varsity athlete who demonstrates combined proficiency in academic standing, sportsmanship, leadership and athletic ability. Oke is actively involved in the community, including the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston, Ont., tutoring cadets in calculus, local food drives and environmental projects.
Francis Guerette-Charland (Victoriaville, Que.) of the UQTR Patriotes is the OUA most sportsmanlike nominee, given to the player who best combines outstanding play and sportsmanship. Guerette-Charland was one point shy of Verreault-Paul of the OUA points championship with 24 goals and 29 assists, while earning just 10 penalty minutes. He is also a first-team all-star forward.
The architect of the Waterloo Warriors, Brian Bourque, is nominated for CIS coach of the year. Waterloo was in a fight to the finish this year in the OUA West, ultimately finishing one point out of first place in the standings. The Warriors featured five OUA all-star players. Bourque just completed his fifth season as head coach of the Warriors. He earned his second OUA coach of the year award this past season after winning his first in 2007.
CIS men's hockey award winners will be announced at the all-Canadian banquet on Wednesday in Thunder Bay, Ont.
