RAVENS SEE RED IN HOCKEY PLAYOFFS
After an exciting 3-2 double overtime win over the Queen's Gaels this past weekend, the Ravens men's hockey team has advanced to the OUA quarter-final against the McGill Redmen. With a fourth place finish in the regular season, the Ravens women's hockey team will take on the No. 1 ranked McGill Martlets in the opening round of the QSSF playoffs.
On the men's side, the Ravens finished the regular season in fourth place with a record of 15-10-3 for 33 points. The Redmen took the second seed with a record of 22-6-0 for 44 points. The teams split the season series with two wins each.
"McGill has been the class of the OUA East since we re-entered the league, so we know what we are up against," said Ravens head coach Fred Parker. "They won't give you anything - you're going to have to earn whatever you get."
The Redmen are coming off a sweep of their series over the seventh seeded Nipissing University Lakers, in which they outscored the Lakers 11-3. McGill might have fresher legs for the upcoming OUA quarter-final as they were able register both wins in regulation. The Ravens on the other hand needed overtime to decide two of their three games.
The Redmen are a high-powered offensive team that led the OUA in goals for with 156. Five of their athletes were in the top 20 in the OUA regular season scoring race, including Francis Verreault-Paul (Mashteuiatsh, Que.) who led the league with 25 goals and 29 assists in 27 games.
McGill also boasts one of the stingiest defences in the league, only allowing 71 goals against. The Ravens will look to players like Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.) to find the back of the net. Both have had success against the Redmen this season, with Berard scoring three goals and MacLean recording two goals and three assists.
Berard has had a great playoff for the Ravens so far, scoring two important goals in the series against Queen's, including the double overtime winner in game three.
McGill will also have to watch out for Christian Bourdeau-Mifflen (Ottawa) who notched two goals and two assists against the Redmen in the regular season.
The Ravens will travel to Montreal for game one of the series on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. They will return to the Ice House on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. for game two. Should a third game be necessary, it will be played Montreal on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.
On the women's side, the Ravens will face a tough test in the opening round of the playoffs as they are up against the powerhouse McGill Martlets.
McGill swept the season series this year, 5-0, outscoring the Ravens 14-4 along the way. The Martlets went 20-0-0 in the regular season, recording a league-leading 79 goals for and only 18 goals against. They have now earned an impressive 80 consecutive victories over CIS opponents.

"At the end of the day we need to win two games to get a chance to go to the national championship. McGill is a beatable team and it's just about us showing up and putting our best game on the ice."
Carleton finished the 2009-2010 campaign with an 8-12-0 record, 24 points behind McGill. They were second only to McGill in goals against, thanks to great performances between the pipes by Valerie Charbonneau (Sudbury, Ont.) and Amanda Muhlig (Sarnia, Ont.)
The Ravens will need to be mindful of Ann-Sophie Bettez (Sept-Iles, Que.) and Vanessa Davidson (Kirkland, Que.) who both notched 31 points this season and were among the nation's top scorers.
Claudia Bergeron (Drummondville, Que.) has had a great season for the Ravens, leading the team with seven goals and six assists in 20 games. Tara O'Reilly (Varna, Ont.) and Jennifer Slewidge (Carp, Ont.) have both recorded nine points.
The last time the Ravens faced the Martlets in the post-season was in the 2007-08 QSSF Championship series, where McGill swept Carleton.
Game one of the best-of-three semi-final is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday night at the Ice House. The Ravens will travel to Montreal for game two on Friday night and should a third and deciding game be needed it will also be in Montreal.
