York Lions @ Brock Badgers
The Brock University men's hockey team (1-0 OUA) opened the 2010-11 OUA regular season with a 3-2 victory over the York Lions at the Seymour-Hannah Centre Friday night.
Brock opened the scoring 11:25 into the first period as freshman Kevin Christmas (Hamilton, Ont.) and junior Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) setup freshman Thomas Stajan (Mississauga, Ont.) who would beat York netminder David Blair from the top of the crease for his first career goal.
The Badgers would take a 2-0 with 2:15 left in the first period, as freshman Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) would add his first career goal in a Badger uniform with Brochu and freshman Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) adding assists.
York's Chris Jones would get one back just 11 seconds later on a questionable goal inside the crease of Brock starter Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.). Brock led 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The Lions would tie the game on the power play 12:38 into the second period as Adam Stuart and Ben Rubin setup Kyle Lamb who beat Jory stick side on a one-timer from the top of the circle.
Just over four minutes later at 16:52, Abercrombie would add his first career goal burying home a rebound past Lions' keeper Blair for the eventual game winner. junior Isaac Smeltzer and Kaine Geldart were credited with assists.
In the third period, the visiting Lions were hungry for a goal, but it was Jory standing tall turning aside nine of his game high 26 saves in the final period for the victory.
York pulled their goalie in the final 30 seconds and with the faceoff in the Brock defensive zone with 0:18 seconds remaining, Brock was able to control the play and keep the puck to the perimeter to secure the win.
Ryerson Rams @ Nipissing Lakers
Rookie forward Dustin Alcock scored on the power play with just under five minutes remaining to lift the Ryerson Rams to a 5-3 victory over the host Nipissing Lakers in the OUA season opener for both teams Friday night in North Bay, Ont.
The Lakers had built a 3-0 lead just two and a half minutes into the second period only to see the Rams respond with five unanswered goals. First-year Rams Greg Riggs and Scott Brown scored in the middle frame before Travis Dunstall, another newcomer, tied the contest early in the third. Third-year forward Greg Payne would silence the crowd of 2,659 with an empty netter four minutes after Alcock's go ahead marker.
Dan Watt and Dorian Peca, with two, were the goal scorers for Nipissing.
Paul Gibson stopped 35 of 38 shots for his first victory of the season, while Matt Hache turned aside 26 of 30 shots between the pipes for the Lakers. Ryerson was 2-for-7 on the power play, while Nipissing was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
NOTES: The Rams were without Michael Paolo, their top scoring defenceman from a year ago, who was serving a one-game suspension from last year's playoff series with UQTR. Ryerson also lost another key defender when Julian Zamparo was ejected from tonight's game in the first period after being involved in a fight with Conor O'Donnell. O'Donnell was also assessed an instigator penalty on the play. First-year Ram and former Boston Bruins draft pick Ryan Milanovic was not in the line-up against Nipissing as he is still recovering from a preseason injury.
