Laurier Golden Hawks @ Ryerson Rams
The Ryerson men's hockey team rose to the occasion Saturday afternoon, beating Wilfrid Laurier 3-2 in overtime for their second straight win.
Defenceman Troy Murray netted the game winner in the extra frame as the Rams (6-11-0) go into the break riding a two game winning streak. The Golden Hawks (7-4-4) were a step up in competition from the York Lions, but leave a Toronto road trip with an overtime and shootout loss.
Buck had a goal and two assists to extend his point streak to two games (2G, 3A). With the three-point night, Buck becomes the team's leading scorer at 16 points.
His line mate, Dustin Alcock, also added a goal and an assist and Alex Sharpe had three assists.
The Golden Hawks came out of the gate strong, but goaltender Louie George was up to the task, weathering an early storm and making 29 saves. George got some help from his posts and improves his record to 3-5 on the season.
Laurier's top threats were contained by Ryerson as Thomas Middup, Jean-Michel Rizk and Ryan Bernardi didn't find their way onto the score-sheet. Benjamin Skinner and Phil Magistrale scored the Hawks only goals.
Discipline was a contributing factor for the Rams as the team was only shorthanded once.
Up next is a month long break for exams and the team plans to use that time to get rested and healthy. Currently, four key players are out for the Rams, including captain Marcus Booth and starting goalie Paul Gibson. The team expects all players to be back after the break.
York Lions @ Carleton Ravens
The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team had their most productive game of the year Saturday afternoon, defeating the York Lions 8-0.
Seven different Ravens scored in the victory including Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.), who contributed a goal and three assists, giving him 11 points in his last five games.
With the Lions unable to find the back of the net, Ravens goalie Matthew Dopud (Point-Claire, Que.) recorded his first shutout of the season.
It was an action packed first period with the Ravens scoring four unanswered goals. Derek Wells (Aylmer, Que.) got things going early when he walked into the slot and beat Lions goalie Travis Rolheiser (Edmonton) three minutes into the game. Midway through the period, Joey Manley (Ottawa) broke in alone and made no mistake, putting the Ravens up 2-0.
Linden Bahm (Kinburn, Ont.) gave the Ravens a 3-0 lead on just their seventh shot of the game. Graham Klassen (Regina) rounded out the scoring for the Ravens in the first when he let go of a rocket from the point on the powerplay that found the back of the net.
Second period goals by Jordan Deagle (Lethbridge, Alta.) and Jeff Hayes (Ottawa) in the first six minutes of the frame gave Carleton a 6-0 lead. Manley picked the top corner late in the period for his second marker of the game, putting the Ravens up 7-0.
MacLean scored the lone goal of the third period, giving Carleton the 8-0 win.
Western Mustangs @ RMC Paladins
The Western Mustangs men's hockey team was denied a victory as RMC won 4-3 in a shootout on Nov. 27.
Kevin Baker, Steve Reese and Chris Rocca scored for Western. While Matthew Pinder scored twice for RMC with the remaining goals scored by Mitchell Smith and Alexandre Leclerc notched the shootout goal.
RMC outshot Western 42-29 and Mustangs netminder Anthony Grieco turned aside 38 shots.
Waterloo Warriors @ Queen’s Gaels
The Queen’s Gaels gave up two straight goals in the third period and the game winning goal in overtime as they fell 4-3 to the Waterloo Warriors in OUA men’s hockey action on Saturday.
Defenceman Kyle Sonnenbury of Waterloo, Ont., was the hero for Waterloo scoring the game tying and game winner to hand the Warriors their 10th win of the season.
Queen’s looked to have the game in hand holding a 3-1 lead heading into the final five minutes of the, however Jarrett Schnurr of Waterloo, Ont., netted a shorthanded goal with 4:04 remaining making the score 3-2. That was Schnurr's seventh goal of the season and on the goal Chris Ray added an assist to extend his point streak to 11 games. He leads his team with 19 points (5g, 14a).
Sonnernburg scored a power play marker to tie the game with 1:07 remaining in the third and then notched the game winner just three minutes into the overtime frame.
Scott Kenway of Calgary opened the scoring for the Gaels in the first period netting his team leading eighth goal of the season
Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., and Jordon Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, Man., recorded Queen’s next two goals in the first 10 minutes of the third period handing what looked like a safe 3-1 lead. Derochie’s goal came shorthanded.
Waterloo’s Tyler Moir of Calgary would score the only goal in the second period. He would also add a lone assist on the game tying goal in the third. Moir had a solid four point weekend with one goal and three assists and sits third in team scoring with 14 points (5 g, 11a).
Queen’s David Aime of Clandeboye, Man., faced 43 shots in the game turning aside 39, while Keaton Hartigan of Kitchener, Ont., made 35 saves on 38 shots for the win.
UOIT Ridgebacks @ Toronto Varsity Blues
Byron Elliott was the shoot out hero for the second consecutive night as the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 3-2 on Saturday, November 27 at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-7-3 and move into seventh place in the OUA East, while the Ridgebacks drop to 5-7-4 and are eighth in the West division.
After Blues rookie Anthony Bergin (Scarborough, Ont.) and UOIT’s Derrick Bagshaw of Oshawa, Ont., both made good on their shoot out attempts, Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) stepped up with some quick stick handling and beat Ridgebacks goaltender Jason Guy through his five-hole for the game-winner.
First-year forward Kevin George of Uxbridge, Ont., scored just 33 seconds into the contest to give the visiting Ridgebacks a quick edge. However, the Blues bounced back and went on to outshoot UOIT 22-1 and scored two late goals to take the lead heading into the first intermission.
Rookie forward Blake Boddy (Ajax, Ont.) finished off a nice tic-tac-toe play with Anthony Bergin and Kyle Ventura to get the Blues on the board. Varsity Blues player of the game and Toronto native Bryden Teich followed that up just over two minutes later when he backhanded a Robert Kay rebound into the net.
After a scoreless second period, the Ridgebacks finally evened the score with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. Bagshaw picked up the rebound off a Chris Purves point shot and backhanded it in to force overtime.
Despite a late powerplay opportunity for the Blues, overtime solved nothing as the game headed into a shoot out for the second straight night at Varsity Arena.
Martin came up with 21 saves in the win.
Brock Badgers @ Ottawa Gee-Gees
Third-year forward and team captain Matt Methot, Ottawa, Ont., scored two power-play goals en route to recording a hat-trick and an assist to help the uOttawa Gee-Gees get past a gritty group of players from Brock University Saturday night. However, it would be the heroics of first-year forward Luc Olivier Blain, Longueuil, Que., that would secure the 4-3 win for the Gee-Gees, scoring a power-play goal in overtime.
The Gee-Gees came out hard in the first period and despite taking an interference penalty early, looked solid on their penalty kill. Methot would score his first goal on the powerplay after a Brock hooking penalty. Picking up a loose rebound from the goalie, Methot would slam the puck in for his eighth goal of the season.
Both teams would come out hard in the second as Brock aggressively looked for their first goal. They would get it after five and a half minutes of play as Badgers forward Jordan Gignac would rifle a shot past third-year Gee-Gees goalie Aaron Barton, Carlisle, Ont. However, Methot would answer right back twenty seconds later to put the Gee-Gees up 2-1.
Brock would start a third period charge however, scoring a goal 43 seconds into the third period after starting with the man advantage. Methot would answer back with his third goal of the game to complete the hat-trick, only to have the Badgers tie it up less than two minutes later.
In overtime, Brock would take an early penalty for too many men on the ice, allowing the Gee-Gees to go on the power-play. Blain would go onto score the winning goal with less than two minutes gone in the extra frame. The Gee-Gees first line of Methot, Blain, and first-year forward Kyle Ireland, Rosetown, Sask., would combine for 10 points on the night (4G, 6A) with both Methot and Blain having four-point games.
The Gee-Gees would also go three for five on the power-play, while Brock was limited to only one goal in six chances.
Lakehead Thunderwolves @ Concordia Stingers
Like the night before, the Thunderwolves had a 5-0 lead before the Stingers even got on the scoreboard.
Mike Quesnele opened the scoring for the Wolves with a powerplay goal at 2:07 of the first period. Matt Caria and Victor Anilane added to the total, giving Lakehead a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Caria notched his second of the game on another Lakehead powerplay at 1:28 of the second stanza, and then Adam Sergerie beat Concordia goaltender Maxime Joyal to make it 5-0 Wolves just under 3 minutes into the period.
Concordia then came to life and Charles Messier and Kyle Kelly scored a couple of quick ones just 18 seconds apart to narrow the Wolves lead to 5-2 by the 5:10 mark. Trevor Gamache found the twine late in the period to give Lakehead a seemingly comfortable 6-2 lead going into the third.
The Stingers scored another pair of goals just over a minute apart when Alexandre Monahan put one past Wolves goalie Kyle Moir at 7:33 of the third on the powerplay, followed by an even-strength goal by George Lovatsis at 8:34. Suddenly, the Thunderwolves lead was not quite so comfortable. But Lakehead held onto the 6-4 lead until late in the period when the Thunderwolves Devin Welsh notched his third goal of the season to ice the win and round out the scoring at the 16:36 mark.
Matt Caria continuted his torrid scoring pace, leading the Wolves with 2 goals and 2 assists, giving him 4 points in the game. Combined with his 3 points on Friday night, Caria tallied 7 points on the weekend.
