Toronto Varsity Blues @ Carleton Ravens
The Carleton University Ravens men’s hockey team wrapped up a successful weekend with a 4-2 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in a chippy affair at the Ice House Saturday night.
The Ravens controlled the majority of the game in the opening period, holding the UofT to just one shot in the first half of the frame. But the Varsity Blues made their next shot count, making no mistake on an odd-man rush as Anthony Bergin (Scarborough, Ont.) gave Toronto the 1-0 lead.
Carleton had a quick start to the second period with Jeff Hayes (Ottawa) tying the game at one two minutes in. With the Varsity Blues on the man advantage minutes later, the Ravens penalty-killing unit had some good pressure shorthanded and it paid off. Brad Good (Kitchener, Ont.) let go of a shot from the point that beat Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) to give Carleton its first lead of the game.
Before the Ravens penalty was up, Kyle Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) picked up a long lead pass and broke in alone, beating goalie Matthew Dopud (Point-Claire, Que.) to tie game at two and that’s how it stayed until the end of the period.
The Ravens opened the third with a powerplay and were able to capitalize thanks to Andrew Self (Peterborough, Ont.), who gave Carleton the go-ahead goal. The Ravens continued to pressure the Varsity Blues and were able to find the back of the net again, this time off the stick of Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.), giving Carleton the 4-2 victory.
Ottawa Gee-Gees @ Queen’s Gaels
For the second time this season, the Queen's Gaels men's hockey team defeated the Ottawa Gee Gees in a shootout, pulling out a 5-4 victory Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
The Gaels fell behind 1-0 after one period of play on Friday after the Gee Gees' Carl Hayes of Delhave, N.S., beat Queen's goalie Steele De Fazio on a powerplay.
The second period was a different story for Queen's as the Gaels put up three consecutive goals on Ottawa. Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., got Queen's on the board after a turnover by the Gee Gees in their own zone. Brock Ouellet of Lindsay, Ont., put the Gaels in front with a powerplay marker and Scott Kenway of Calgary, also scored on a powerplay to give the team a 3-1 lead.
However, the Gee Gees would pull within one late in the second and jumped on the Gaels early in the third with two quick goals to chase De Fazio from the net.
The Gaels refused to quit and late in the third, Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C., found the back of net to tie the game and force overtime.
After neither team could end the game in the extra session, the two squads went to a shootout for the second time this year. It would take eight shooters to determine a winner in this game as Ouellet beat Aaron Barton of Carlisle, Ont., to give the Gaels their fourth shootout win of the year.
David Aime of Clandeboye, Man., picked up the win for the Gaels, stopping all 13 shots he faced in relief of De Fazio.
Soquila and Derochie were the Gaels top point producers in the game, each recording a goal and two assists.
Waterloo Warriors @ Western Mustangs
The Mustangs (8-0-1) continued their home-ice winning streak in a 5-3 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Nov. 6. Western is 4-0 at home.
Jason Swit, Steve Reese, Kevin Baker, Adam McKee and Aaron Snow scored for the Mustangs. Warriors goals were scored by Mike Veysey (Bedford, N.S.), Jarrett Schnurr (Waterloo, Ont.) and Steve Whitley (Petrolia, Ont.).
Defenceman Geoff Killing jumped up into the offensive attack and worked the puck down low before threading a pass back to Swit on the blueline. Swit released a shot on net that soared directly past Warriors goaltender Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon, Sask.) who was being screened by Western’s Reese.
Reese was planted in front of the net again as Western’s powerplay unit handled the puck in Waterloo territory. He batted the puck in, notching the Mustangs second goal of the game, after the puck jumped loose on a scramble in the crease.
Mustangs defender Brandon Greenside fed Baker a breakaway pass up the middle of the ice. Baker streaked in alone and wired a shot over Leclerc’s shoulder for a 3-0 lead heading into the second frame. Baker also assisted on the first two goals.
Less than five minutes into the second period, rookies Randy Hanagan and Mckee attacked the Warriors end. Leclerc denied Hanagan’s first shot on net, but Hanagan grabbed the rebound and made a cross-crease pass to Mckee who tapped the puck in for Western’s fourth goal.
With pressure from the Warriors, goaltender Anthony Grieco lost sight of the puck in a crowd of bodies dominating the front of the net and Veysey backhanded the puck past Grieco to make it a 4-1 contest.
Western’s offensive play continued as the Mustangs attacked the Warrior’s zone full tilt. Jason Furlong batted the puck down with his glove and beat the Waterloo defender along the boards. Furlong made a quick pass to Snow who redirected the puck past Leclerc.
The Mustangs struggled to get the puck out of their zone as the Warriors increased their offensive pressure and Schnurr notched Waterloo’s second goal of the game.
With under three minutes of play left in the game, Western received two infractions and the Warriors had a two-man advantage. Whitley wired a shot over Grieco’s shoulder from the top of the circle to bring the Warriors within two goals. Grieco held strong on the goal line, turning aside 38 shots for the win.
The Mustangs held Waterloo scoreless for the remainder of the game and earned a 5-3 win.
Brock Badgers @ UOIT Ridgebacks
The Brock University men's hockey team came away with a 3-2 overtime road victory against the UOIT Ridgebacks Saturday night at the Campus Ice Centre.
The Badgers opened the scoring 13:23 into the first period on the powerplay, as juniors Steve Miller (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) setup freshman Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) who beat Ridgebacks starter Jeff Dawson for his team leading fifth goal of the season.
Brock would take a two goal lead midway through second period as senior Steve Mullin (Guelph, Ont.) added a power play marker with Brochu and senior Ryan Allen (Fort McMurray, Ont.) adding assists.
Just 14 second later, the Ridgebacks would make it a one goal game as Scott Baker beat Kurt Jory (Brandon, Ont.) for his third of the season.
With less than two minutes left in regulation, UOIT's Ryan Oliver would tie the game 2-2 sending it to overtime.
Much like the last contest between these two teams, overtime would not last long as Brock freshman Jake Laplante (Mississauga, Ont.) added a short-handed goal just 1:19 into the extra frame for his first goal as a Badger and the game winner.
In goal, Jory recorded 25 saves for the victory with Dawson turning aside 33 of 36 Brock shots in the loss.
Windsor Lancers @ Guelph Gryphons
After picking up a win last night against the Windsor Lancers (4-5-1), the Guelph Gryphons (5-4-0) came out this evening looking to steal both victories in the two-game mini-series. Putting forth a solid, all-around performance, Guelph tallied 3 goals and held the Lancers from putting the puck in the net, resulting in a huge 3-0 victory for the Gryphons.
Andrew Loverock (Elmvale, Ont.) got his second consecutive start between the pipes for the Gryphons. Stopping all 18 shots he faced, Loverock not only ppicked up the win, but recorded his first shutout as a Gryphon as well.
Jim Watt (Edmonton, Alta.) had another strong outing for the Lancers, matching his stats from the previous evening with 34 saves on 37 shots.
The top line for Gryphons was back it tonight claiming 6 of the 8 points awarded to the team. Ed Gale (Keswick, Ont.) had an outstanding performance collecting a goal and two assists on the night. Line-mates, Thomas Kiriakou (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Kris Belan (Florence, Ont.) each picked up a pair of points as well, Kiriakou’s coming on a goal and an assist and Belan’s on two helpers.
Tim Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) netted the first goal for the Gryphons, and Geoff Guimond (Mississauga, Ont.) and Nathan Martine (Port Colbourne, Ont.) each had assists on the evening.
Fr the second night in a row, Guelph came out firing on all cylinders and it paid off, as the Gryphons were the first to put the puck in the net. Shortly after Gryphon defenseman Patrick Campbell (Sauble Beach, Ont.) had joined an offensive rush creating a 2-on-1, Tim Priamo decided it was his turn to chip-in deep on the offensive zone. Jeff Guimond fed the defenseman with a short pass and Priamo skated in on net from the faceoff circle to the right of Jim Watt. Keeping the puck glued to his stick, both Priamo and Watt waited for each other to make the first move. As Priamo crossed the top of the crease, Watt jumped back to cover the open net, but Priamo was patient, waiting until the last possible moment to tuck the puck just inside the post. The Gryphons’ 1-0 lead would be maintained for the remainder of the first period
The second period played out much like the second frame of last night’s game, no scoring but high-intensity and aggressive play. Each team got their share of chances but strong goaltending from both sides kept the score at 1-0.
The Gryphons came out flying again at the start of the third period capitalizing on an early powerplay to take a two-goal lead. While set up in the Windsor end, Nathan Martine wired low shot on net from the point. The puck missed just wide, but took an awkward bounce off the end-boards and ended up on the other side of the net. Ed Gale was in perfect position to make a play and quickly lifted the puck into the top of the net from the side of the post.
Guelph would add their third goal of the game before the midway mark of the third period. After breaking up a play in front of the scorekeepers’ booth, Kris Belan got possession of the puck and took it into the Lancer zone along the boards. Spotting Kiriakou coming down the middle of the ice, Belan sent a hard pass right on target and Kiriakou wasted no time pulling the puck back and snapping it top-shelf, where it rung off the bottom of the crossbar.
Guelph spent the remainder of the third period forechecking hard, but taking no chances, getting back to the neutral zone quickly to defend their 3-0 lead. As time ticked down, Loverock prevented an icing by playing the puck and the Gryphons ran out the clock behind the net, sealing their third straight win and Loverock’s first shutout as a Gryphon.
Laurier Golden Hawks @ Lakehead Thunderwolves
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks took the first game of two for the weekend as they defeated Lakehead 6-5. Improving to 5-2-1, the Hawks move ahead of Lakehead (4-4-1) for second place in the OUA West.
The first period was a quiet one as the each team failed to score. Lakehead pestered Ryan Daniels (Pickering, Ont.) with 11 shots in the period. He finished the game with 36 saves on 41 shots in the win. Lakehead's Alex Dupuis (Thunder Bay, Ont.) turned aside 29 of 35 shots.
