REDMEN FORCE GAME 3 IN MEN'S HOCKEY SERIES WITH RAVENS
The Redmen came out hard knowing this game could be the last of their season. But, it was the Ravens who would open the scoring, as Mike Byrd (Kemptville, Ont.) notched his first of the series on the power play just three minutes in.
The teams continued their physical play, with both sides throwing the body around throughout the period. With six minutes left in the frame, a Ravens forward lost his stick in the defensive zone, giving McGill a slight advantage. Andrew Wright (Toronto) let go of a shot from the top of the slot that found the back of the net, tying the game at one apiece.
The Ravens had a great chance to take the lead when McGill took a four-minute penalty for high sticking. But, the Redmen displayed some great penalty killing and with 30 seconds left in the Ravens man advantage, Francis Verreault-Paul (Mashteviatsh, Que.) went top-shelf on Alex Archibald (Ottawa) to give McGill a 2-1 lead after 20.
The Redmen were pressing hard to build on their lead in the second and they came close on numerous occasions as their pressure led to some miscues by the Ravens. Seven minutes into the period, Carleton gave McGill their second man advantage of the game. The Redmen set up well and Alexandre Picard-Hooper (Boucherville, Que.) passed to open Verreault-Paul at the face-off dot. He made no mistake, picking the top corner and gave the Redmen a two-goal lead.
McGill had its own chance with a four-minute man advantage midway through the period. The Redmen thought they'd scored a power play goal but the puck was played with a high stick and the game remained 3-1. But, just one minute after the Ravens killed off the penalty, Simon Marcotte-Légaré (Longueuil, Que.) picked up a pass back door and shovelled it home for a 4-1 lead.
The Ravens had a chance to cut in to the Redmen's lead as McGill went down two men for 40 seconds late in the period. The Ravens were looking for the perfect shot but they wouldn't get one as McGill killed off their penalties and held on to their three-goal cushion at the end of a penalty-filled second period.
McGill continued to pressure Carleton in the third, holding the Ravens without a shot for more than seven minutes. Archibald made some big saves in the period, but Picard-Hooper would add another goal for the Redmen eight minutes into the frame. That would spell the end of Archibald's night as Ryan Dube (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) came in to replace him.
But, the change in goal didn't wake up the Ravens as the Redmen continued to dominate for the remainder of the game and skated away with a convincing 5-1 victory.
The third game of the best-of-three series is set for Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in Montreal.
