Ottawa Gee-Gees @ York Lions
The York University Lions men’s hockey team triumphed 4-3 over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night (Nov. 20) in a tense game that featured strong goaltending by David Blair, particularly in the third period.
Blair, of Ajax, Ont., stopped 29 shots, including 16 in the third period alone, to preserve the win for the Lions. It was their first in six games and improved their record to 5-9 on the season. With the loss the Gee-Gees fall to 7-4-2.
An aggressive tone was set early by both teams with plenty of chippy play taking place along the boards.
The Lions tested Gee-Gees goalie Aaron Barton (Carlisle, Ont.) with several shots early on and their tenacious play earned them the game’s opening goal at the 11:30 mark. Fifth-year right winger Jesse Grespan (Toronto) found himself wide open in front of the net after receiving a beautiful line drive pass from rookie forward Ben Rubin(Montreal). With the goalie in his sights, Grespan flicked a gorgeous wrister over Barton’s shoulder to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Lions kept up their steady offensive play with Kyle Lamb(Holland Landing, Ont.) narrowly missing the net on a wrist shot and Rubin was toppled head first into the opposing net following a breakaway chance.
The Gee-Gees found the equalizer while on the power play with just nine seconds left in the first period. Defenceman Patrick Burns (Ottawa) received a pass from Kyle Ireland (Rosetown, Sask.) in the slot and fired the puck past Blair.
In the second period, Blair was again solid in net, stopping several high-quality chances by the Gee-Gees offence. Ottawa continued to press on its first power play of the period but at the 9:12 mark rookie Chad Hohmann (Salmon Arm, B.C.) delivered a perfect one-timer pass to Matt Thompson(Kitchener, Ont.), who put the Lions up 2-1. Kyle Lamb (Holland Landing, Ont.) also assisted on the shorthanded goal.
The Lions weren’t done there. Second-year forward Jesse Messier(Keswick, Ont.) hit the back of the net once again after finding an opening in the slot. Hohmann picked up his second assist of the evening with help from left winger Jaskirat Gill(Brampton, Ont.).
Not to be outdone, the Gee-Gees found their momentum behind a late goal coming from Julian Demers (Perth, Ont.) on the power play with assists from Austin Krahenbil (Melville, Sask.) and Carl Hayes (Delhaven, N.S.).
With the score at 3-2 for the Lions heading into the third period the Gee-Gees pulled out all the stops in order to get the score in their favour.
After the Lions drew another penalty, the Gee-Gees pounced on the power play opportunity and evened the score at 3-3 thanks to a goal by Ireland.
Less than four minutes later the Lions took the lead again on a goal by Hohmann, his third point of the night, when he tipped in a shot from Grespan following a pass from Chris Jones (Grafton, Ont.).
Blair stood tall down the stretch to hold off the charging Gee-Gees and the Lions earned their fifth victory of the season.
Concordia Stingers @ UOIT Ridgebacks
Josh Vatri and Kyle Wetering each had three point nights for the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team in a 6-4 victory over the No. 10 ranked Concordia Stingers on Saturday night.
The win puts an end to the Ridgebacks four-game losing streak and gives the team a much needed confidence boost heading into their three game road trip to finish out the 2010 portion of their schedule.
Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) and Wetering (Pickering, Ont.) were two of five Ridgebacks to have multi-point nights. The two forwards had a goal and two assists in the Ridgebacks two-goal victory. Vatri netted the game-winning goal for UOIT at 9:23 of the second period, marking his fifth goal of the year. Vatri has nine points in his last seven games.
Brendan Wise (Stouffville, Ont.) and Jeremy Whelan (Pickering, Ont.) each had a goal and an assist for UOIT, while Mike Noyes (Lucan, Ont.) recorded two assists. Luke VanMoerKerke (Tillsonburg, Ont.) scored his second goal in as many nights.
Both starting goalies were pulled in the game as the team’s combined for seven goals after just 2:33 minutes into the second period. UOIT got off to a great start in the game as they would score four first period goals and outshoot Concordia 20-5 in the period.
Jason Guy (Whitby, Ont.) would make 19 saves after coming into the game in relief for starter Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.) to pick up the win for UOIT.
UOIT 5-7-2 remains two points ahead of York for the final playoff position in the OUA western conference. The nationally ranked Stingers fall to 9-5-0 on the year.
The win capped off a perfect day for the UOIT Ridgebacks as the women’s hockey team defeated Waterloo 4-3 earlier in the afternoon at the Campus Ice Centre. This is the first time in UOIT hockey history that both teams picked up wins on the same day.
Nipissing Lakers @ Lakehead Thunderwolves
There was a much better flow to start the game than there was on Friday night, with Nipissing looking more ready for a battle. Both teams traded some chances early on before a scary moment when Wolves defenseman Pierre Marc Guilbault was involved in a nasty collission at center ice. He left on his own power, but did not return to the game.
The injury seemed to spark Lakehead as they upped the tempo of the game. Brock McPherson scored his sixth goal of the season at 12:55, wiring a shot past Nipissing goaltender Kyle Cantlon. Assists on the goal went to Ryan Magill and Adam Sergerie. Then, after some nice work down low from Trevor Gamache, Devin Welsh found himself with the puck in front of the net, putting it past Cantlon to put the Wolves up 2-0. Assists on the goal went to Gamache and Andy Hyvarinen.
Nipissing came out hard in the second period. Andrew Marcoux scored on the powerplay after Lakehead captain Jordan Smith was whistled for elbowing after he flattened a Lakers forward. Then, after a giveaway in the Lakehead defensive zone, Nipissing forward Kevin Rebelo fired it past Lakehead goalie Kyle Moir to knot the game at 2-2. The Lakers continued their string of fine play with their third unanswered goal as Dorian Peca capitalized on a broken play to put the Lakers in front 3-2. Lakehead found their game again towards the end of the second period, highlighted by a Brennan Menard blast from the slot that found it's way past Nipissing goaltender Kyle Cantlon at 18:50 of the second. The assists on the goal were credited to Andrew Wilkins and Kris Hogg.
There was a nice flow to start the third period with both teams working for every inch of ice. Both goaltenders made some timely saves to keep their respective teams in the game, including a couple big saves by Kyle Moir while Lakehead was shorthanded. Matt Caria was buzzing all over the offensive zone in the third period, but was kept in check by some big saves from Cantlon.
Four-on-four overtime solved nothing.
In the shootout, Kyle Moir was perfect, and Matt Caria and Adam Sergerie both scored on their attempts to give the Lakehead the 4-3 win.
Ryerson Rams @ Waterloo Warriors
The Warriors blanked the Ryerson Rams by a score of 4-0 on Friday night at the CIF Arena in Waterloo to win their third straight game and move to 8-5 on the season. The game was the first cross-over action of the year as the Rams of the East were looking to stop their nine game slide.
Following a tentative opening frame, both teams began to find their stride and intensity picked up in the second with more offensive attack displayed by both squads.
The Warriors would open the scoring on a powerplay midway through the second period as Josh Schappert continued with the hot stick scoring his fifth goal of the season. Third year defenceman Steve Whitely fired a one-timer on net that was tipped by Jarrett Schnurr and fired home on the rebound by Schappert past Rams netminder Louie George of Waterloo
Heading into the third period up 1-0, Waterloo extended their lead just one minute into the frame as Kyle Sonneburg found the net on a wrist shot from the far boards that found its way through a screened George. The goal came just two seconds after Travis Dunstall stepped onto the ice following his late second period hooking penalty.
Waterloo would add two more goals as Kirt Hill and Schappert (second of the game) added goals to lift Waterloo to a 4-0 win. Chris Ray added an assist on the late third period goal by Schappert to extend his point streak to eight games, notching a point in each game he has played in this season.
Warrior goalie Keaton Haritgan stopped all 23 shots he faced to pick up his first shutout of the season and fifth win. George stood tall for his Rams stopping 35 of 39 shots in the loss.
Waterloo take their 8-5 record against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday in Waterloo who are riding high after handing the Western Mustangs their first loss of the season defeating the purple squad 5-4 in overtime on Friday night.
Toronto Varsity Blues @ Western Mustangs
Byron Elliott was the overtime hero as the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team came back to defeat the No. 4 Western Mustangs 5-4 on Friday, November 19 at Thompson Arena in London, Ont.
With the win, the Blues are 3-6-3 and sit in eighth place in the OUA East, while Western is 10-0-2 and remain atop the West division.
The Blues scored three third-period goals and Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) netted the game-winner at the 2:31 mark of the extra frame to secure the victory. In his first start as a Varsity Blue, rookie goaltender Garrett Sheehan of Cremona, Alta., made an impressive 50 saves in the win.
Western got out to an early 2-0 lead after the first period with goals from Chris Corbeil and Kyle Lamb.
Toronto started the second period seeking revenge and scored a powerplay goal less than four minutes into the frame. Rookie forward Blake Boddy of Ajax, Ont., streaked down the left wing and cut across the front of the net forcing Mustangs netminder Josh Unice (Holland, Ohio) from post to post. Boddy slipped the puck just past Unice’s skate to bring the contest within one goal.
Western’s Jason Furlong countered Toronto’s goal as he ripped a shot through the two defencemen and past a screened Sheehan for a 3-1 lead. The home team went up by three five minutes into the third period on the powerplay when London, Ont., native Scott Aarssen ripped a shot from the point to beat Sheehan.
The Blues quickly turned things around, scoring two goals off the sticks of Zack Fenwick and Robert Kay within thirty seconds to bring the game within one. First-year forward and Scarborough, Ont., native Anthony Bergin surprised Unice and notched the tying goal unassisted with only five minutes remaining in regulation.
McGill Redmen @ Brock Badgers
It took a shootout to do, but the Brock Badgers have knocked off their a ranked opponent for the second time in as many days when they defeated the No. 2 McGill Redmen 3-2 Sunday.
McGill opened the scoring 3:23 into the first period when Jean-Francois Boisvert and Stephen Valente set up Christophe Longpre-Poirier for his sixth of the season. Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) answered for the Badgers five minutes later with his sixth of the season, from Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) and Joey Pell (Dryden, Ont.).
The game would remain tied at one until Andrew Wright's powerplay goal at the 12:29 mark of the third period would restore McGill's one goal lead. Francis Verreault-Paul and Ryan McKiernan added helpers.
Staring down the barrel of a disappointing loss, the Badgers responded to pull even. The Badgers moved the puck around the offensive zone on the powerplay when Isaac Smeltzer (Estevan, Sask.) drove a shot from that point that beat McGill goalie Hubert Morin to even the score at two. Jordan Gignac (Hamilton, Ont.) and Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) assisted on the Smeltzer goal at 16:30 mark of the third period.
Overtime solved nothing and the two squads would head to a shootout. With the Badgers shooting last, Kurt Jory turned away the first McGill shooter. Abercrombie buried his chance but then Alexandre Picard-Hooper scored for McGill to even things up. The goalies took over as Jory and Morin went back and forth turning away the next eight shooters in a sudden victory situation.
Finally Brochu made a deke on Morin and buried his chance to give the Badgers the stunning 3-2 win.
The Badgers handed McGill their first loss of the season. The game was only the second time this season the Redmen have given up points in the standings after a season opening overtime win to Toronto.
Queen’s Gaels @ Laurier Golden Hawks
Zack Shepley (Milton, Ont.) of the Golden Hawks scored the game winning goal with five minutes left in the third against the Queen's Gaels. The Hawks have won two in a row and improve to 7-4-2 while Queen’s falls to 5-7-1.
The Gaels Brock Ouellet (Lindsay, Ont.) scored on the power play three minutes into the game for an early lead. Credited with assists on the play were Jordan Mirwaldt (Winnipeg) and Alexi Pianosi (Halifax). Ryan Daniels (Pickering, Ont.) of the Hawks took charge after the goal stopping all 28 shots he faced from then on. Steele De Fazio (Georgetown, Ont.) of Queen's blocked 29 of 31 shots in the loss.
Kain Allicock (Markham, Ont.) scored his fourth of the season on the power play to tie the first period at one. The power play goal was the last special teams goal of the night. The Hawks went one for three while the Gaels went one for four.
The Hawks Zack Shepley netted his second of the season on a shot that deflected off the glass and in to give the Hawks a big win.
