Windsor Lancers @ UOIT Ridgebacks
The UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 6-4 on Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre. Seven goals were scored in the third period which saw UOIT coming out with the two goal victory and two points in the standings.
Brendan Wise (Stouffville, Ont.) had three points on the night with two goals and an assist, including the game winning goal which came at the 13:55 minute mark of the third period. Wise has five goals in his rookie campaign and is ranked second in OUA freshmen goal scoring.
The Ridgebacks offence was running on all cylinders as they scored six goals against Windsor, handing OUA athlete of the week and Windsor goalie Jim Watt his first loss in his last three starts.
Scott Baker also had three points for UOIT, scoring a goal and two assists. Mike Noyes, Jeremy Whelan, and Luke VanMoerkerke were the other goal scorers for UOIT.
Nathan Spaling and Chris Purves each had two assists for UOIT in the win.
Guelph Gryphons @ Lakehead Thunderwolves
The Lakehead Thunderwolves downed the Guelph Gryphons 8-2 Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, ON. Alex Dupuis had another strong outing between the pipes for Lakehead, making 46 saves as they swept the weekend series.
Lakehead started the game much like they finished last night’s game - physical. Wolves captain Jordan Smith again set the tone early on, absolutely crushing Guelph’s Justin Gvora. Smith received a penalty on the play, but Andrew Wilkins scored a beautiful unassisted shorthanded goal just 43 seconds into the contest to put the Wolves up 1-0. The physical play continued with plenty of big hits on both sides, and lots of after the whistle rough stuff. After a checking to the head penalty put Lakehead on the man-advantage, Ryan McDonald fired a wrist-shot over the blocker of Guelph goaltender Cody St Jacques. Guelph pulled within one at 11:16 of the first as Edward Gale snuck a quick shot past Thunderwolves goalie Dupuis. Lakehead answered back at 15:47 as Matt Caria stole the puck at the blueline and made a picture-perfect pass to a waiting Adam Sergerie, who converted for his fourth goal of the season.
Alex Dupuis made some nice stops to start the second period while Lakehead was shorthanded, keeping them in front by two. At 4:42, after controlling the play in Guelph’s end, Matt Caria scored on a gorgeous cross-ice feed from Ryan McDonald to put the Wolves up 4-1. The other assist went to Mike Quesnele. After Caria put the puck on net, Ryan McDonald kept digging at the rebound until it squirted over the line, to put Lakehead up 5-1 at 11:18 of the second, with assists to Caria and Quesnele. Not quite content, Lakehead kept their foot on the gas as Kalvin Sagert scored his first gooal of the season at 16:21 of the second to put the Wolves up 6-1 with assists by Caria and McDonald.
The third period brought much of the same, as Lakehead controlled possession, and made Guelph work for every inch of the ice. Mike Quesnele continued his torrid pace to the season, scoring his fifth goal of the season at 4:15 of the third to put the Wolves up 7-1. With the game well out of reach, Devin Welsh scored his first goal of the season at 11:44 on a nice feed from Caria, and the other helper went to Quesnele. Guelph’s Michael McFarlane got a late goal at 17:40 to round out the scoring.
Western Mustangs @ Waterloo Warriors
Captain Kyle Lamb (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) led the Mustangs squad with two goals as Western defeated the Waterloo Warriors 4-3 on Oct. 23.
Remaining Western goals were scored by Kevin Baker (Georgetown, Ont.) and Jason Furlong (London, Ont.). Tyler Moir scored two of the Warrior’s three goals, the third goal notched by Steve Whitley.
Netminder Anthony Grieco (Brampton, Ont.) turned aside 25 saves for the win, only allowing five goals on 54 shots for the weekend.
With tonight’s victory the Mustangs remain in first place in the OUA West division, one point ahead of the Laurier Hawks, who Western stole two points from with a 7-2 on Friday night.
Brock Badgers @ Laurier Golden Hawks
The Hawks turned their two game losing streak around as they defeated Brock 3-2 on Saturday night. With the win, the Hawks improve to 4-2 while the Badgers drop to 1-3.
Brock's Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the first period, assisted by Steve Mullin (Guelph, Ont.) who finished with two assists on the night.
Ryan Bellows (St. Catharines, Ont.) replied with his third goal of the season to tie the game up 1-1 after two periods.
After the second intermission, Hawks coach Greg Puhalski must have said something right as his team soared off the bench peppering 18 shots on Kurt Jory (Brandon, M.B.) to the Badgers one. Their effort paid off as Alexander Poulter (Broomfield, Co.) and Kain Allicock (Markham, Ont.) scored just over a minute apart to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead. The Badgers Dan Dooley (Saint John) made good on the Badgers only shot of the period to close the gap to one. They could not muster any more as they fall 3-2.
Ryan Daniels (Pickering, Ont.) turned aside 21 of 23 shots for the win. Kurt Jory made 40 shots in the loss.
York Lions @ Waterloo Warriors
The York University Lions men’s hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 5-3 on Friday evening (Oct. 22) in what became both a high-scoring affair and a tough, aggressive battle.
Second-year centre Mackenzie Micks (Orillia, Ont.) scored two of his team-leading four goals, including the game winner, to help the Lions to victory.
In a game that featured several penalties called against both teams, the Lions attack established dominance in the first period with first year defencemen Kyle Lamb (Holland Landing, Ont.) delivering a pass to Jesse Messier (Keswick Ont.) to open the scoring.
The refs called the game tight right from the start with five penalties drawn against the Lions (3-2) to three for the Warriors (3-2) just in the first period. The strict officiating didn’t deter the Lions, however, as veteran forward Jesse Grespan (Toronto) struck the back of the net with help from rookies Ben Alavie (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Nate Fleming (St. Albert, Alta.) to put the Lions up 2-0.
Fleming wasn’t done there as he continued his offensive assault with a goal of his own to close the period with assists by Ryan Kerr (Lions Bay, B.C.) and Jaskirat Gill (Brampton, Ont.).
Much of the credit for the Lions early lead goes to second-year goaltender David Blair (Ajax, Ont.) who stifled 16 shots in the first to preserve the lead. The strong play from Blair (28 saves total) comes as no surprise as he has proven to be one of the most efficient goaltenders this OUA season. He currently sits sixth among active goaltenders with a .920 save percentage.
The Warriors Kurt Thorner (St. Thomas, Ont.) solved Blair on an unassisted goal to open his teams scoring in the second period. The Lions were not to be outdone, however, as Micks pushed the lead to a commanding 4-1 score with assists from Chris Jones (Grafton, Ont.) and Messier.
The Warriors seemed ready to mount their comeback in the game’s third frame with Thorner racking up an assist to go along with his goal, helping on a shot by Kyle Sonnenburg (Waterloo, Ont.) with an additional assist by Kyle Schwende (Kitchener, Ont.). Warriors rookie forward Andy Smith (Rosetown, Sask.) added a goal of his own to bring the game to within a goal.
Waterloo pulled its goalie to press for the equalizer but Micks scored into the empty net with three seconds left on the clock to seal the victory.
Queen’s Gaels @ Carleton Ravens
The Carleton University Ravens men’s hockey team defeated the Queen’s University Gaels 2-1 in overtime at the Ice House Friday night.
The last time the two teams met was when the Ravens began their quest for the 2009-2010 Queen’s Cup by eliminating the Gaels from the postseason with a thrilling 3-2 double overtime victory.
The Ravens battled hard in the first, creating a few scoring opportunities in the first few minutes of play. Carleton’s biggest chance came near the end of the period when forward Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.) came around the front of the net. With his shot being blocked by the Gaels’ defence, Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.) took advantage of the rebound and sent one in, only to be saved by Queen’s goalie, Steele De Fazio (Georgetown, Ont.).
The Ravens got things started early in the second when Joey Manley (Ottawa), was able to find the back of the net 30 seconds into the period. Queen’s was unable to capitalize on their chances and the period ended 1-0 for Carleton.
Queen’s put more pressure on the Ravens’ net in the third, and their hustle paid off when Scott Kenway (Calgary) received a pass out front and put the puck over the line to tie the game with seven minutes to go. Despite a few chances on either end, both teams were unable to take the win in regulation.
Carleton’s goal would come with a little over a minute to go in the extra frame, when Andrew Self (Peterborough, Ont.) beat De Fazio to end the game.
Ryerson Rams @ Ottawa Gee-Gees
First-year forward Kyle Ireland, Rosetown, Sask., had three goals and an assist, including a penalty shot, Friday night as the uOttawa Gee-Gees rolled over the Ryerson Rams, 7-3.
The game didn’t begin well for the Gee-Gees as the Rams scored within the first two minutes of the game. Driving towards the net, three Ryerson forwards made a nifty three-pass play around the uOttawa defence to beat first-year goalie Harrison May, Vancouver, B.C. The Gee-Gees would also lose third-year forward Simren Sandhu, Calgary, Alta., early in the game with an undisclosed injury.
However, from that point on the Gee-Gees would step up their game, scoring five unanswered goals in the first and second periods. Second-year forward Jamie Collins, Timmins, Ont., would open the scoring for the Gee-Gees halfway through the first. Picking up the puck in front of the net, Collins would go top shelf on third-year Ryerson goalie Louie George, Waterloo, Ont.
After a stellar second period, the third provided some scary moments for uOttawa. Ryerson would come out with guns blazing, scoring their second goal with just over 30 seconds gone in the frame. However, the Gee-Gees would dig in their heels and bounce back with a beautiful goal by Ireland fed by a great back-hand pass from first-year forward Luc Blain, Longueuil, Que.
Harrisson May, in only in his second CIS game, was solid all night, stopping 33 of 36 shots.
